Matheus Nunes: Lucrative West Ham contract offer revealed by report after David Moyes confirmation

Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes

Sources in Portugal have detailed how much West Ham were willing to pay Matheus Nunes before the Sporting Lisbon star rejected their advances.

Nunes has been widely tipped to leave Sporting this summer after a great campaign with the Portuguese side in 2021-22. The central midfielder is clearly too good for the Primeira Liga and several Premier League clubs want to snare him.

Liverpool and Leeds both rate Nunes highly and reports claim they could make bids for him before the transfer window shuts.

Amid these rumours, West Ham reportedly made a £25million bid for Nunes on Friday morning. This fell well below Sporting’s £42m valuation of the star, as well as the £51m release clause in his contract.

Sporting were unlikely to accept the proposal due to their demands. But even if they did accept, Nunes has no plans to join David Moyes’ side.

According to the Daily Mail, Nunes rejected West Ham as soon as he heard about their offer. It seems he doesn’t want to drop out of the Champions League, which West Ham cannot provide as they will compete in this season’s Europa Conference League.

Ahead of the Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Moyes was asked about the approach for Nunes.

He replied (via The Athletic’s West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas): “We made a bid for him but he chose not to come.”

The Scot also quashed any rumours of West Ham being interested in Barcelona forward Memphis Depay. “It’s not us,” he said, when asked about a Prem club’s move for the Dutchman.

West Ham willing to triple Matheus Nunes wage

Following Moyes’ confirmation that West Ham made a bid for Nunes and had it pushed back, reports have revealed the financial terms they put on the table.

According to Sport Witness, who cite Portuguese newspaper Record, West Ham were willing to triple Nunes’ weekly wage.

However, this couldn’t get Nunes to join as he is prioritising a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs next.

He is preparing to ’embrace a competitive project’, which will involve a team fighting for trophies.

Nunes is yet to receive an offer worth considering. Liverpool could change this, though Jurgen Klopp claims the Reds won’t be making any more signings this summer.

In the mean time, Nunes will have to continue shining at Sporting before potentially moving on next summer. He has made one appearance so far this season and got an assist in a 3-3 draw with Braga.

Sporting will not have to lower their asking price any time soon. The Portugal international’s contract runs for another four years, which means Sporting can still request top dollar next summer.

Meanwhile, West Ham are showing a serious interest in Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior, according to reports.
