Memphis Depay: West Ham to succeed where Tottenham failed as eye-watering contract offer submitted

Barcelona forward Memphis Depay

Amid Tottenham’s failure to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona, West Ham could reportedly swoop in and capture the forward on a big-money contract.

Tottenham have been keeping tabs on Depay’s situation since early July. The star is available for transfer this summer as Barcelona are willing to terminate his contract a year early.

Depay joined the Spanish giants on a free transfer from Lyon last year. He managed 13 goals in 36 outings during his debut season at the Nou Camp.

But Xavi clearly wants to take the squad in a different direction and Barca are now set to part ways with the Dutchman.

According to a recent report from Spanish outlet Sport, Tottenham are battling Chelsea and Everton for Depay’s signature.

However, Spurs are not his first option as they have yet to convince him on Antonio Conte’s project.

In response to this, West Ham have made an audacious move to land Depay, according to Football Insider.

They claim the Irons want to follow up on Gianluca Scamacca’s signing by bringing in another top-class forward. And Depay is the man they have chosen.

West Ham willing to spend big on Memphis Depay

West Ham chiefs have sent Depay a huge contract offer which will make him the highest paid player at the London Stadium, should he agree to it.

The report doesn’t reveal exactly how much West Ham are willing to pay the 28-year-old each week. But it will be more than the £120,000 a week Alphonse Areola and Kurt Zouma reportedly take home.

Depay would be a fantastic signing for Moyes and West Ham. He has won 80 caps for the Netherlands and has scored plenty of goals for Lyon and PSV in the past.

He has Premier League experience too, owing to his days at Manchester United. However, Depay didn’t do well there, registering just seven strikes in 53 games.

Unfortunately for the Hammers, there are a couple of reasons why this transfer is unlikely to come off.

First of all, West Ham will struggle to convince Depay to join. He wants to be playing for one of the biggest clubs in Europe next, to give him the best chance of starting for Holland at the Qatar World Cup.

And if Conte couldn’t convince him to join Spurs, then West Ham have no hope of managing this themselves. Spurs are in the Champions League, whereas West Ham will compete in this season’s Europa Conference League.

Secondly, Juventus will pose a serious problem in the transfer hunt. The Serie A giants are ready and waiting to snap Depay up, should his Barca exit become a formality.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Juve are preparing to hand the attacker a two-year contract. They can give Depay the perfect platform to shine and impress Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal, something West Ham simply cannot manage.

Meanwhile, a pundit has told the Hammers to complete a surprise raid on Aston Villa for an English player.
