West Ham pursuit of Ligue 1 star to fix clear issue bears no fruit at present

West Ham have had an approach for Rennes star Nayef Aguerd rebuffed per a report, leading the Hammers to explore other centre-back options.
The Hammers’ defensive issues are apparent at the moment. Indeed, the side have conceded six goals in their last three Premier League fixtures.
Long-term injuries to centre-back pair Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma do not help matters. What’s more, those injuries have left the Hammers with only two recognised senior centre-backs to pick from.
One West Ham central defender, Issa Diop, is subject to interest from Newcastle United. However, the Hammers are unlikely to sell, as it would massively hinder their defensive depth.
With the current problems West Ham are having at the heart of their defence, they could do with some reinforcements in the position.
As such, they are reported to have approached Rennes regarding Aguerd, per L’Equipe, via Get French Football News.
Aguerd has featured in all but one Rennes game in Ligue 1 this season, only missing the most recent fixture. The 25-year-old has clearly had a hand in Rennes’ defensive solidity, with the side having conceded just 18 goals in 19 games.
Aguerd therefore seems like a perfect addition to the Hammers side, having also scored two goals this season. However, their approach was apparently rejected immediately.

Newcastle targeting West Ham defender Issa Diop
Newcastle United still need defensive help and are looking at West Ham’s Issa Diop for £10m
The report states the Hammers are also interested in Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, among a few other centre-backs.
Kelly looks capable of making the step up from the Championship to the Premier League. As such, he may be the most realistic target for West Ham in January.
Aguerd and Sarr potential Hammers’ signings
Chelsea’s Malang Sarr is also on the list of potential centre-back signings at West Ham in January.
Sarr has played just six times for Chelsea since returning from his loan at Porto last season.
Clearly behind a number of centre-backs in the pecking order, it may be time for the Frenchman to move on.
Another loan may be a good option, should Chelsea not want to see him depart permanently. Furthermore, that could present a good opportunity for the Hammers, who are without their preferred centre-back partnership, likely until the back end of the season or beyond.
