First West Ham summer transfer under threat as Nayef Aguerd deal held up by ‘disagreement’

Rennes star Nayef Aguerd

Negotiations between West Ham and Rennes are continuing over the transfer of Nayef Aguerd, although a ‘disagreement’ is reportedly putting the deal on hold and under threat.

West Ham have been linked with Aguerd for several months. Club officials have scouted the centre-back and put him forward as a potential signing to improve David Moyes’ defensive options.

A new central defender is a must this summer following injuries to Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna last term. Plus, West Ham need to strengthen ahead of playing in the Europa Conference League.

With this in mind, the Hammers recently began initial discussions with Rennes for Aguerd’s capture. On Monday, these talks reached an ‘advanced’ stage. And the Morocco international then began looking for a property in London.

Football Insider claim West Ham will spend around £25million on Aguerd. This could put him sixth on the club’s list of most expensive signings.

Moyes’ side are willing to pay that much as Aguerd is 26 years old and essentially in his prime. Plus, he is a left-footed centre-half, which will provide good balance in defence.

Ogbonna currently fits into this category. But at 34, the Italian might not be playing in the Premier League for much longer.

Nayef Aguerd discussions hit obstacle

They claim talks between the two clubs are continuing. However, there has been a snag.

West Ham and Rennes have reached a ‘disagreement’ over the potential bonuses that should be put in place. This is normal for a transfer as the buying club, in this case West Ham, won’t want to pay Rennes too much in the future due to bonuses.

But it does cast some doubt over the potential deal, as it gives other clubs a chance to swoop in and meet Rennes’ demands in full.

GFFN also dispute the transfer fee. They claim it will be between £29.8m and £34.1m, which is more than Football Insider’s estimate.

West Ham do have money to spend but there isn’t a huge amount available to Moyes. So fans will be hoping the transfer fee is the original price stated – £25m – rather than this new sum.

The east London club are still on the right path to making Aguerd their first summer signing. However, updates like these cause uncertainty and West Ham need to resolve the problem as soon as possible to prevent any rival bids.

Meanwhile, Hammers scouts were reportedly watching a Brentford star play for his national team on Monday.
