Pundit stunned at talk West Ham could sell top centre-back before Saudi transfer deadline

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged West Ham not to sell one of their better defensive players centre-back “under any circumstances” amid reported interest from Saudi Arabia.

The former Aston Villa forward has called on David Moyes to get tough and not allow Nayef Aguerd to follow a number of other Premier League stars in making the lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League.

It was revealed earlier this week that Al-Ittihad are planning a shock late move for the Hammers star before the close of their transfer window Thursday September 7.

The Morocco international, who enjoyed an outstanding World Cup with Morocco in Qatar, only moved to the London Stadium in a £30million deal from French side Rennes last summer.

The 27-year-old played a key role as Moyes’ men lifted the Europa Conference League title last season and has already made three appearances so far this season.

Aguerd is also under contract at the London Stadium until June 2027, while there is no mention of what sort of fee is involved.

And Agbonlahor, speaking to Football Insider, is adamant the Hammers have to keep the player, saying: “I don’t think they should let him go under any circumstances.

“He’s looking so assured next to Kurt Zouma at the moment – and the defence looks strong.

“If I’m David Moyes then I’m pleading with the board not to let him go. This squad is exactly what he needs.

“They’ve got a long season in the Europa League ahead of him, and it will be tough. They will face some tough tests in that competition.

“But I can’t see the board going against the manager and letting him go. I can’t see him going if Moyes doesn’t want him to.”

West Ham are back in action on September 16 when they host Manchester City at the London Stadium.
