West Ham transfer news: Approach made for Thilo Kehrer as PSG pair considered, but Spanish threat lurks

Thilo Kehrer playing for Paris Saint-Germain

West Ham United have made an initial approach to Paris Saint-Germain over the chances of signing Thilo Kehrer, according to reports.

West Ham have already signed one centre-back this summer, in the shape of Nayef Aguerd. However, the new arrival has picked up an injury, which is forcing David Moyes’ side back into the transfer market.

Furthermore, the impending departure of Issa Diop to Fulham is depriving West Ham of defensive depth. In a season during which they will be playing in four competitions again, it is clear to see why they may want another reinforcement.

As things stand, they only have Kurt Zouma as a fit, natural centre-back option. They are waiting for Aguerd, Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna to return from the treatment tables.

When they are back, they could have a new teammate to compete for a place with. According to Foot Mercato, West Ham have put Thilo Kehrer on their shortlist.

The Germany international currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain, for whom he has made more than 100 appearances since a 2018 transfer from Schalke.

But he could be on the move this summer, which has aroused West Ham’s interest. The French outlet claims his salary could be an obstacle, but the fact that his PSG contract is due to expire in less than 12 months’ time is promising.

Foot Mercato also claim West Ham are eyeing his PSG teammate Abdou Diallo. Attracting interest from Italy as well, he could cost between €20million and €25million (£16.9m to £21.1m).

Kehrer is right-footed, whereas Diallo is left-footed. When Foot Mercato published their report on Monday afternoon, they said it remained to be seen which option West Ham would favour.

Confirmation arrives of Thilo Kehrer interest

Since then, Sky Sports have revealed that the Hammers have held preliminary talks with PSG about Kehrer.

As Foot Mercato noted, it is confirmed that Sevilla are also keen. The Spaniards sold Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde, their two starting centre-backs, earlier in the window.

Although West Ham beat Sevilla in last season’s Europa League, the La Liga outfit have Champions League football on offer this term. In contrast, for West Ham, it will only be the Europa Conference League.

But time will tell which route Kehrer would choose if either club is successful.

West Ham rightly in a hurry to bring in new defender

Time is a commodity that is not on West Ham’s side, though. According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, West Ham want a new defender in place before their next match, away at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

They had to rely on playing Ben Johnson, naturally a full-back, out of position in their opening defeat to Manchester City. Clearly, a new arrival centrally is a priority for a West Ham side who have been busy this summer.

David Moyes said ahead of that game that he wanted more incomings still in the transfer window. Kehrer could well be their next topic of focus.

After already making one signing from PSG – turning Alphonse Areola’s loan deal permanent – perhaps they could take another player from the French champions.
