West Ham agree deal for sixth summer signing, with PSG player about to travel for medical

Thilo Kehrer

West Ham are on course to sign another central defender this transfer window after reportedly agreeing a deal with Paris Saint-Germain for Thilo Kehrer.

David Moyes’ side have already spent £30million this summer to bring in Morocco international centre-half Nayef Aguerd from Rennes. The star has penned a five-year deal at the London Stadium.

Unfortunately for Moyes and West Ham, Aguerd is already in the treatment room. He tore ligaments in his ankle during a pre-season game and had to have surgery on the issue. Reports claim Aguerd will be out until around October.

This is a problem for the club as Craig Dawson is struggling to overcome a thigh injury and Angelo Ogbonna continues to recover from ACL surgery.

As such, Kurt Zouma is the only senior centre-back in the squad. He had to play alongside full-back Ben Johnson in the centre of defence during the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

West Ham need to add more players in defence and have taken steps to do just this. Earlier on Tuesday, The Sun revealed West Ham to be in talks with PSG over Kehrer.

The east London outfit want him to be registered in time for the Premier League match against Brighton at the weekend. However, he will not be at the club in time for their Europa Conference League game versus Viborg on Thursday evening.

There has now been a double update from football.london and Fabrizio Romano. According to football.london, West Ham have struck an agreement with PSG for Kehrer. They will pay the reigning Ligue 1 champions £10.1m (€12m) for him.

Thilo Kehrer prepares for England adventure

Romano, meanwhile, claims the deal is set to reach completion. Kehrer, a 20-time Germany international, will travel to London in the next few hours.

He will take part in a medical later this week before signing his new West Ham contract. This will probably be when the two teams announce the transfer.

It is a decent signing for West Ham to complete. Kehrer has made 128 appearances for PSG, as well as 59 with German club Schalke.

He has Champions League experience and has represented Germany on the international stage. So he shouldn’t feel the pressure of the Premier League too much.

Kehrer should feel confident about forming a solid centre-back partnership with Zouma, especially with Dawson, Aguerd and Ogbonna out.

However, his place could come under threat once Dawson and Aguerd return. Dawson has done extremely well at the back under Moyes, while Aguerd is one of the club’s marquee summer signings.

Meanwhile, West Ham are planning to send a new offer to Club Brugge after having their bid first for Hans Vanaken rejected.
