West Ham transfer news: Maxwel Cornet on the radar but Hammers will have to fight off rivals

Maxwel Cornet, Burnley, May 2022.

West Ham United are being linked with a swoop for strike ace Maxwel Cornet who is available for a bargain fee following Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.

West Ham’s hunt for a new striker has been well documented. A host of attackers have been linked with a move and now Cornet can be added to the list. The Ivory Coast ace is also said to be a target for Everton.

Burnley snapped up Cornet from French outfit Lyon in 2021 and he impressed in his debut campaign. He bagged nine goals but it was not enough to keep the Clarets in the Premier League.

The player now looks set to move on as there is a £17.5m relegation release clause in his contract. According to reports in the Telegraph the Hammers could look to activate it.

Burnley will be powerless to keep him if that does happen. But they still stand to make a tidy profit on the £12.85m they paid for him.

The report claims that a transfer battle between Burnley and Everton could be on the cards. Whether that will push the price up remains to be seen. But Burnley will be hoping for a bidding war as they need every penny they can get.

Everton are also keen to sign a new striker as they plan to rebuild their squad. The Toffees just avoided the drop themselves at the expense of Burnley. And changes are afoot.

Frank Lampard’s men could lose a striker or two this summer. Both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison are expected to move on. If that is the case replacements will be needed and Cornet could fit the bill.

There is sure to be interest from other clubs as well as soon as Burnley put Cornet up for sale.

Maxwel Cornet proven in the Premier League

Cornet has caught the eye this season and at £17.5million could be a bargain signing in this day and age. It is no surprise that Moyes is considering a swoop. To score nine goals in a struggling Burnley side is an impressive return.

Cornet has shown he has what it takes to play in the Premier League. In a better side he could flourish even more. And at 25 he has his best years ahead of him.

The Ivory Coast international is also versatile. He played as an out-and-out striker for Burnley. But also showed he could operate down the left or right during his 26 appearances. So at that price it is well worth the Hammers taking a punt.
