Wolves contingency plan in place as Man Utd, Arsenal alerted to perfect transfer chance

Ruben Neves, Wolves, March 2022.

Wolves reportedly have a pair of star signings lined up, as it looks increasingly likely that Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho could leave the club.

Wolves have enjoyed several superb seasons since their return to the Premier League. The pick of the bunch were their seventh-placed finishes in their first two seasons back in the top flight.

The Molineux outfit are continuing to impress this season, and are currently eighth in the league. Neves and Moutinho have been two of the most crucial players in the Wolves side since they joined.

Neves joined for £15million while Wolves were still a Championship side, and impressed immediately, with six goals and an assist in the triumphant 2017/18 campaign.

He has continued to make waves in the Premier League. Indeed, the Portuguese has made over 200 appearances for the West Midlands club, and has contributed to 36 goals.

His compatriot, Moutinho, joined the club upon their return to the Premier League. He has made 169 Wolves appearances to this point, contributing to 28 goals.

Clearly, the pair are key assets to Bruno Lage’s side. However, it appears both may move on from the club, with Moutinho’s contract running out, and Neves a target for a number of sides.

As such, Wolves are reportedly planning for a future without the pair. It seems that Wolves will employ a familiar strategy in recruiting from Portugal. The Athletic, via HITC, claims that Sporting Lisbon pair Joao Palhinha and Matheus Nunes are being lined up.

Ruben Neves could leave Wolves this summer

If Wolves don't qualify for European football this summer, Ruben Neves could leave.

Palhinha, 26, has made 12 appearances for Portugal, and has twice found the net. He is more of a defensive midfielder, but has scored three league goals this term.

Nunes is in just his third season of professional football, but has also broken into the Portugal side, scoring once in his five caps. Indeed, the pair appear to be apt replacements for Wolves’ midfield stars.

Wolves sizing up potential replacements for their midfield pairing is sure to be greeted with a smile at Old Trafford and the Emirates.

Both could be seeking a new central; midfielder this summer and Ruben Neves has been linked with the pair in recent months.

Potential Neves replacement ‘ready’ for move

Adem Zorgane, Charleroi, March 2022.

Charleroi midfielder Adem Zorgane has also been linked with a move to Wolves. The 22-year-old has contributed to seven goals in the Belgian Pro League this season.

Furthermore, the midfielder is ready for a big move, despite having only played for Charleroi since last summer.

“I feel ready to leave,” he said.

“But I am also ready to stay. I’m here for the team that helped me get to Europe and made me shine a little bit. If we have great collective goals next year, like European football, and if the club needs me, even if there are offers, I could stay.

“A player always wants to look for bigger and the best. But progress can also be made within the same club. If we have a real challenge in Charleroi, it can also be very good [to stay].”

Wolves could have a plethora of options available to them next season, should they want to make the signings of each.
