Wolves are targeting Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi

Wolves are pushing ahead to seal a move for Swiss international Nico Elvedi before the close of the transfer window, TEAMtalk understands.

Wolves have been chasing the Borussia Monchengladbach defender all summer, but have been unable to progress on a deal due to their financial issues.

However, new Wolves boss Gary O’Neil is hopeful of getting some funds from the proposed sale of Matheus Nunes to Manchester City to strengthen his squad before next week’s deadline.

O’Neil is looking to add a new centre-back, a new central midfielder and a striker to his ranks at Molineux – and Elvedi is his top target for the centre-back role.

Wolves have been in the market for a new centre-back following the departures of Nathan Collins and Conor Coady this summer to Brentford and Leicester City respectively.

Elvedi is in the final year of his contract with Monchengladbach and he has turned down the offer of a new deal at the German club, who earlier this summer took Maximilian Wober on loan from Leeds United.

Wolves are hoping to capitalise on Elvedi’s contract situation by landing the defender for a cut-price fee of around £8million, which would not blow a major hole in their small budget.
