Wolves handed big chance to land Barcelona star as Jorge Mendes plots double Molineux deal

Nico Gonzalez Barcelona 2022 TEAMtalk1

Wolves could reportedly be handed their chance to sign a Barcelona midfielder this summer after the Nou Camp giants decided to allow the player to leave.

Julen Lopetegui is expected to be backed in the summer transfer window after the club secured their Premier League status with a run of four wins from their last seven Premier League outings.

And it appears that a Barca star is very much on their radar, with the club hoping to land Nico Gonzalez.

The 21-year-old has been tipped as a potential replacement for the long-serving Sergio Busquets in Catalonia. However, it appears that Xavi is not planning on keeping Gonzalez around.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo anyway, who claim Xavi is not planning on using the young midfielder in his engine room next season.

Gonzalez has spent this season on loan at LaLiga rivals Valencia but has not had the success he would have wanted, although that is largely down to injury issues.

And while his reputation remains intact as a promising young midfielder, it’s not quite good enough to keep him at the Nou Camp.

That leaves his agent, Jorge Mendes, looking to secure a permanent switch elsewhere and Mundo adds that Gonzalez has a ‘lot of hands in the Premier League’ – whatever that actually means!

Mendes plotting more Wolves transfer business

And while Mundo does not actually mention Wolves, the one place where Mendes does have a lot of sway is Molineux.

Indeed, a switch to join up with Lopetegui appears to make plenty of sense, given that Wolves are expected to lose another Mendes client in Ruben Neves this summer.

It’s actually been reported that Mendes has been working on Neves’ moving to Barcelona, with Gonzalez lined up to move in the other direction.

In fact, the report adds that it will come as no surprise if the two clubs do swap midfielders in the upcoming window.

Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they host Everton at Molineux.
