Not a good match from Chelsea. Everybody just looked tired. Brighton played good and we were very average. I think Kovacic helped a lot when introduced but it is kinda late. Lukaku got no supply, how can we blame him? I think we were lucky to get a draw. Ziyech’s goal was unexpected. And Brighton looked really lively. Werner, where was the sprint. He is normally quick, he wasn’t today and just looked tired as everybody else. Mount was disappointing, he was rested yet he did not do a lot during the match. And it was him who lost Webster for their goal.
Anyway, the title has been long gone. I just can hope that we will still finish in the top 3 or even top 4 is acceptable. Not lower.
We look tired. Brighton deserve to win this match. They look more lively than us. And what happens with Ziyech? He scored but looked sad.
welcome back devchels !!
If the price is reasonable, I would love to see Hazard back. Look at his expression, the only one who did not smile during Super Copa celebration. He is not happy at Madrid and it is reflected in his game.
For me, the rest of this season is to win as many trophies as we can: Carabao Cup we are in the final, Club World Cup that we’ve never won, etc. But also to see in the squad who should be retained and who should be sold in the summer. So far I would say sell Werner, Ziyech, Pulisic. They haven’t added much quality. And integrate Broja & Gallagher from loan. Barkley should go without saying. ASAP if possible. Saul probably too should go in the summer.
On the contract front, worrying that there’s no news of Azpi, Rudiger & Christensen. Where’s the club at? Have we made progress?
I think Brighton will play as usual: tough to crack. They have a really good GK and good defenders. And I think our ex academy Lamptey will start for them and will cause havoc against Marcos Alonso. But I am still expecting us to get result there, to win there. We are almost full team. Jorginho & Mason Mount fresh, they should play. Havertz is fresh too
With now the team is mostly back except long-term injuries, I believe we will win this. The performance against City wasn’t too bad. If we can be a bit more clinical, we should be able to crack Brighton. A double from Lukaku this time, my prediction. 0-2 for Chelsea. Team: Kepa – Sarr,Thiago,Rüdiger – Azpi,Jorginho,Kovacic,Hudson-Odoi – Mount -Havertz,Lukaku. 3-4-1-2 this time to maximize our attack
I believe now that we hit a jackpot by appointing Tuchel. It did not feel that way at that time as Lampard’s sacking was still hard to believe. A legend at Chelsea. But Tuchel steered us to 3rd finish last season as well as an FA Cup final and a Champions League title. And Chelsea were top of the table early December before covid and all injury disruptions. So yeah, I believe that Tuchel is the best person for the job and I have no doubt he will deliver. There’s a chance that next season will be Pep’s last season at City. We have to stick with Tuchel, be patient a bit more for the lack of good results recently.
Not sure why at the moment there is even a discussion to sack Tuchel. Did not he win the Champions League with Chelsea not so long ago by beating Man City? Did not he bring Chelsea to top 4 finish last season after having languished in the 9th position when he took over? Does he not bring Chelsea to the Carabao Cup final this season?
Man City are alone in this league. Even mighty Klopp cannot compete every year with them. Tuchel has not brought a lot of players. Most players have been at Chelsea before his takeover. And yet he has already won Champions League and UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea. Not sure whose choice Lukaku was, could be Tuchel’s, could be Abramovich’s but he has not work wonder so far and this clearly contributes to our inability to compete in the league. But I think the strategy, the tactics, there is nothing wrong with them. City were not that threatening yesterday, they were just able to score. And we were not. Lukaku wasted 2 chances. Ziyech wasted a golden chance.
We shall use summer to get rid of mediocre players and replace them with either promising academy graduates like Broja and Gallagher or with world class players like Haaland or dare I say Kylian Mbappe.
No doubt anymore that City are much better than us. But again, Lukaku wasted 2 chances. Ziyech wasted a chance. De Bruyne did what this Chelsea team can’t do: shoot from outside the box.
Kanté was below par today, I have impression that Kovacic fought all alone in the midfield. Pulisic, Ziyech, Werner: sell them all. Not Chelsea quality.
Christensen is out due to positive covid test. I think Man City are the favorite here. They play at home and they are the team on fire. They’ve always won for I don’t know how many matches. For me any other result than a defeat would be a good one. I would try to revert to 3 midfield to counter theirs.
My team (3-5-2): Kepa – Azpi, Thiago Silva, Rudiger – Hudson-Odoi, Kanté, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso – Lukaku, Werner
I reckon that City will try to dominate as always. We would need our speedy players to counter them. Werner could come handy there and just hoping that his finishing will be all right this time.
Good article, thanks Blueowner.
Transfers from what I gathered this morning:
– Kenedy will be back from loan. Not sure how Tuchel will use him?
– Digne signs for Villa. So he won’t be coming to Chelsea to solve our wing back crisis.
– Read on TT that Barça accepted our bid for Sergino Dest. A bit worried for this if it’s true. Is he any good? I don’t trust anymore USMNT players, look at Pulisic. A bit too much hype IMO. And what’s the rules for ‘foreign (non-European Union) players? How many are allowed per club?January 13, 2022 at 12:07 am in reply to: 12/01, 7:45 PM Carabao Cup | Semi-Finals | 2nd Leg v Spurs #2040725
A final!!! Yeah. A pretty comfortable win but without VAR, Kane would have had a hattrick and the score would have been 3-1 for Spurs.
But overall we were the better team in these 2 legs.
That’s one thing. The next would be his salary demand. It’s good nonetheless that he wants to stay at Chelsea! Hopefully Marina can make it happen.
It seems that Lyon don’t want to release Emerson.January 12, 2022 at 4:50 pm in reply to: 12/01, 7:45 PM Carabao Cup | Semi-Finals | 2nd Leg v Spurs #2040633
Hope we’ll not play for a draw and we’ll score early. I really want Chelsea to win trophies and Carabao Cup is a trophy. They key I think would be to shut off Kane completely. Without Son, probably Kane + Moura their two most dangerous players and if we can neutralize them, we should get a good resultJanuary 11, 2022 at 1:45 pm in reply to: 12/01, 7:45 PM Carabao Cup | Semi-Finals | 2nd Leg v Spurs #2040151
I would not be too sure. Our failure to score more in the 1st leg could be costly for us. Harry Kane is a beast on his day. But they will be without Son though. So yeah, I would take a draw. Probably 2-2 the score? I would like to see Lukaku scoring again. In case Thiago isn’t available, Sarr will start again. I think he was quite solid last timeJanuary 10, 2022 at 7:21 pm in reply to: 12/01, 7:45 PM Carabao Cup | Semi-Finals | 2nd Leg v Spurs #2039866
I really would be disappointed if we let Spurs catch us with 2-0 advantage. Even though we play there at Spurs. Yeah, an early goal would be the best thing to happen for us. Are Kante and Thiago Silva back for this match?
Blaze, for sure we can’t sell Lukaku this January window. It will derail our season big time as he is our only striker. If you talk about summer, we’ll discuss it again then, we’ll cross the bridge when we get there. But January, it’s impossible IMO to sell Lukaku. We won’t have time to seek for an adequate replacement.
999, I can see why the club is reluctant. I think either we loan a LB/RB either we buy a really good player. For me Lucas Digne is not Chelsea quality and he is 28, so not a long term solution either. I hope we can get Emerson back?
Tammy Abraham, a good player, but again not Chelsea quality IMO. Lukaku is a much better player than Abraham. His track record in the Premier League and in Serie A can only confirm thatJanuary 9, 2022 at 10:55 pm in reply to: FA Cup Round 3 v Chesterfield at Home 5.30PM Saturday 8/1/2022 #2039517
In the league, we can only be realistic that we won’t beat City or even Liverpool for the title. But I am hoping we’ll have a good run in cups this season. Carabao Cup one more leg in the semifinal and if we can avoid defeat: we would play the final. FA Cup we have a good draw for the next round. Champions League we have a good draw for the next round. FIFA World Cup I also hope to win that cup that we’ve never won.
I only watched the highlight against Chesterfield, our finishing looks worrying. For me the 100% goal against any other team was Werner’s. CHO’s goal: he wouldn’t be able to do that in the Premier League as surely there would be opposition defenders closing on him. Lukaku’s goal wouldn’t happen in the Premier League as Hall already lost the ball and Lukaku’s finishing wasn’t convincing at all. That close distance and the shot still touched the GK. Christensen’s goal was a bizarre one, a lob header like that. And Pulisic wouldn’t be fouled like that against a Premier League opposition. Tuchel will need to find a way in the finishing department, to take our chances
I am not convinced by Saul but I think that Barkley convinces me even less. I even see a priority to load Barkley off to make room for Gallagher and Gilmour. Summer would be ideal but if an offer comes in January, we should just sell him.
In this time of crisis where all central midfielders weren’t available, Barkley isn’t able to fill in. So he is of no use for Chelsea FC IMO. Sell him, even for free, ASAP as we’ll need to accomodate Gallagher/Gilmour. Saul is only on-loan, we can give him 6 months more to show his contribution.January 7, 2022 at 4:43 pm in reply to: FA Cup Round 3 v Chesterfield at Home 5.30PM Saturday 8/1/2022 #2038784
Yes I missed Barkley 999, well spotted!! But I won’t include him. I think he is one player I want to go in January. What he’s shown when given opportunity IMO is not enough. He has to go permanently somewhere else. Even for free. Hotels workrate on the field is not good enough neither is his attacking contribution. Last time he played, all he did was slowing things.January 7, 2022 at 1:50 pm in reply to: FA Cup Round 3 v Chesterfield at Home 5.30PM Saturday 8/1/2022 #2038675
I think Kepa should start. For me he has to play as often as possible as he’s our main GK during Mendy’s absence. I would also start Sarr for him to get more minutes. Werner, Ziyech, Saul, Pulisic, RLC, CHO all have to start. Those players need to be ready anytime called as we are crippled with injuries & covid. They can’t be rusty due to not playing enough.
With the core above, other remaining positions can be given to academy players like Vale and Mbuyamba for example.
