Steve – I think the issue is that we are not CL or even European “savvy” over two legs as we showed against Porto, who were not the strongest team in the last 16. Also Kane always scores against us so we need a two goal lead at least to go Munich I feel. COYG! At least BM can’t take any fans away from home after their ban for throwing fireworks which is a good advantage.

Fantastic result but all around me were as nervous as each other, especially during extra time when I think the players were full of the jitters and that got through to the crowd as well.I thought the ref in the first leg was bad, but this one last night was just as poor. I cannot understand how he was given the EL and CL finals in successive years and is one of the elite UEFA refs around. He allowed Porto unlimited time at all set pieces and throw-ins, ludicrously added on just one minute in the first half and only three in the second.Every time a Porto player collapsed in a heap he stopped play, which was numerous times. I think he’d taken a bung.I heard ex-players praise him for letting the game flow!! Crap, he rightly did not allow several dives to stand, but he could have cost us. I thought the team did not play well as it was again stop and start and we will have to play much better to progress, but at the moment, that’s for another day, just really glad we got it done. Well done to Raya for his penalty saves which won us the tie. I wish those praising him as the new Messiah would take a look at the comments after his performances against Chelsea, Lens, Luton and also Porto in the first leg,as well as other games. Hopefully, he will progress and sustain this as he is Arteta’s choice for the future, but a bit of balance for any one of Arteta’s purchases would be good. The only one who is 100% a success is Rice, so let’s see what happens in the games to come in the rest of the season.

Am going tonight and am very nervous. I saw an article that said Arteta has managed 5 knock-out matches at home in Europe and we have not progressed any further so that is a real worry. When you think it’s Sporting, Olympiakos, Prague etc and not Barca, Real Madrid or Bayern, that’s alarming. Crucial tonight is an early goal (for us!) and then I think momentum will take us through. However, if we are sloppy as we were at Porto, we could live to regret it. The tactics in Portugal were crap, not one shot on target as though we were playing for a draw, reminded me of the tactics deployed a few years ago in the EL against Villareal, quite bizarre. Given we have no games until the City match on 31 March, we can give everything, even if it has to go to extra time. I’m just hopeful that the ref is an improvement on the first leg one who was hopeless, fell for every trick that Porto pulled, ie falling down when we went anywhere near them- a bit like Brentford did on Saturday. In Europe, there’s virtually no contact allowed, so we should recognise that; we don’t want a sending-off as Pepe can orchestrate such nonsense.Martinelli is out, so Jesus should play and with Raya back, that should be the only other change. Hope our keeper remembes where his goal is and moves his feet, if he had done in Portugal, we would not be 0-1 down.

I agree a striker and defensive midfielder as Partey and Elneny must go. Luiz and Neto will be too expensive and the altter will not be a sub. Depends who we can unload as we never seem to get much for our players. The original point I was making was that if we aren’t playing now with an inverted left back, a more traditional one seems as though it could be back in favour? Also, Tomi’s fitness levels and dependency is as bad as Tierney’s now, so should we extend his contract and not Tierney’s?!
Probably, Arteta thinks he might fetch more for KT- have seen £20m, but that might be a stretch.

Usual crap from you, blowing smoke up Arteta’s backside.I don’t see the two Chelsea “mates”very much. The people who came to the house were mostly Arsenal fans and one Spud and one Manc. They have all played the game to a reasonable level as I have and I coached as well for a bit. We all go to games, not watch highlights. Also, I am not desperate to back Lord Arteta as you are in everything he does. Soon, you’ll be bleating that Vieira deserves a chance! I thought you might have changed your tune and the few remaining posters, ie three on here could debate in an adult manner with you. How wrong I was,I won’t make that mistake again and you can send loads of posts answering your own as you did initially on this thread. We are able to dominate teams more because of Raya!!!!! Forget the weak teams we scored early first and then the Spaniard had nothing to do, such as Palace, Burnley, Sheffield Utd etc. What about the 7 goals this “number 1” has let in this season, which any keeper of merit wouldn’t have done? “No-one here thinks that’s such a stupid question!!” Ha ha…… By the way, have you ever played the game, and I mean not just in the playground?

Stev, the only reason Raya is in goal is for his supposed distribution. But,early in the season Ramsdale had worked on this and we saw when he played for England how that aspect of his game had improved. I have no issue with an upgrade on the keeper position, but Raya is not an upgrade. Both our keepers have strengths and weaknesses and Raya is hopeless positionally as we have seen several times this season. As far as I can recall, Ramsdale made mistakes last season against West Ham and Southampton, there might have been more, I don’t know.As I have said previously, Raya has already been responsible for letting in 7 goals this season which a better keeper would have saved- not a great stat in six months is it? Does that justify his position- no! He makes a lot of us very nervous and if you went to a match you would hear that first hand. He has made huge errors in several games and people seem to forget these- Luton, Lens, Chelsea,Porto etc. As for Raya not having to make “worldies” because we dominate play, that’s just too stupid, so I won’t reply. I mentioned that to a few fans I met for a drink last night and the laughter was ongoing for quite a while. Lastly, to you and steve, Raya would not have saved that Toney effort, he would have been further upfield and off his line- just as he was against Porto- the titch has no idea where his goal is. But never mind, the three Spaniards, Arteta, Cana and him can just ignore it and go off every week-end and cook paella for each others’ families. Injuries aside, Ramsdale has played his last game for us and we’ll be stuck with Raya.Next season, Arteta will no doubt decide he needs an upgrade, his ability to spot keepers is hopeless. Now why haven’t we got Martinez any more?!

Sorry Steve we’ll have to agree to disagree.Raya is no better than Rambsdake.,Peopke have short memories. Raya has given away goals since he came in against Spurs, Chelsea, Lens, Newcastle , Luton(2),Porto. How many goals is that? He has zilch positional sense and if he came in after 4 months out, you’d see what might have happened. Let’s see how he does in the games to come- I fear the worst.

Well thank God for that late winner, even if as everyone says,Havertz should not have been on the pitch. The officials were appalling yesterday. The ref allowed Brentford to stop the game every few minutes for non-existent injuries, I’m sure they would not have done if they were behind. As for the penalty shouts, I knew when that northern twat, Paul Tierney was on VAR (was that a demotion for his error that allowed the Scousers to score last week in the 99th minute?!) we would get nowt. Ever since he gave that non-existent penalty against Cedric at WHL two seasons ago, you can see how corrupt he is. The penalty shout for Trossard was nailed on, but the ref and Tierney could not give it! As for Ramsdale, not surprising he made a mistake after sitting on his backside for nearly four months- no sharpness and no time to adjust to his back four as Raya has done for the past six months. If Raya had been in goal, he would not have saved that Toney effort as he has no idea where his goal is as we saw against Porto and Chelsea. Add on his gifts to the opposition against Spurs,Lens, Luton and we have two keepers who are not of the highest class. I’ve hear some nonsense from one poster, but apparently when Raya plays well(see the five matches mentioned where he gave away goals), he has no saves to make and he helps us to control games! What crap, he palms away crosses to the other team, he lets in shots which he doesn’t move for and dives under others. Yes he makes no saves, because he can’t, he doesn’t move his feet and is average, except for occasionally very good distribution. Let’s see how he does in difficult games away at WHL, OT, City and Wolves. He will cost us I’m afraid as soon as he has something to do. Meanwhile, I thought Martinelli’s absence was one factor in our play being not so fluent, Trossard doesn’t have that directness and pace, so doubt the former will be risked on Tuesday. Well done to White, Rice and Havertz yesterday, we’re still in this fight. I have a ticket on TKT Exchange for Porto, and fingers crossed we get over the line. We might as well kill oursleves as we then don’t play again until City, 19 days later.

I would not start Partey as he gave the ball away so many times in the last match a better team like Brentford will make us pay. I would play Trossard instead of Martinelli and keep the latter for Porto if the cut has healed. I hope we can keep winning and a 1-0 will do me as anything other than a win will cause a bit of nervousness before Porto and the last thing we need on Tuesday is to concede an early goal!

No, I still say spending £130m on those 3 players has NOT made us better. Havertz is not worth £65m for what he’s doing as it’s not exceptional and for that fee he should be. Let’s see if he can continue against better opposition we have coming up in the future. I’m really not concerned whether the Raya/ Vieira thing “has been done to death”. A manager has to be objective and those two are not better than what we have.

Pointless question after a few good games.Anyone with any brains will ask at the end of the season has the £130m spent or will have been spent on Havertz, Vieira and Raya made Arsenal a better team and helped the club to improve? There is no question that Rice has, but the others as many suggest, the jury is still out.Any manager has his favourites, but the test of a very good one is to be objective and not put his interests before the team’s.Raya has not made us better and is not an improvement on Ramsdale. When he has anything to do, his positioning and goal- stopping efforts are amateurish as recently seen at Porto, let alone many otehr games- Luton, Lens away, Chelsea ec. What Havertz is currently doing is good, but for £65m? Vieira is an Arteta signing and a poor one. He cannot play with intensity,is weak and can be blown off the ball if you breathe on him and is not a Saka alternative as he has no pace. Lastly, after an hour on Monday, we were 6-0 up. With Brentford up on Saturday, why the hell was Ramsdale not given 30 minutes as he will not have appeared for nearly 4 months before our next game? Managerial ineptitude- if he messes up, there will be reasons! How many other players can come in and impress straight away, having not played since November, even more crucial for a keeper to have had some minutes-ffs.

Well,am suffering another post-match hangover as I did after going to the game against Liverpool- long may it continue! We were great with our speed off the blocks and never let the Magpies settle. What a surprise and a nice one to see Karius in goal, thought he’d disappeared after his Liverpool performances. Another surprise was seeing Jorginho in the line -up, but again, as against the Scousers, what a great display. If we can keep him fit for some crucial hgames coming up in the next month or so, hopefully he’ll perform well again. Another great atmosphere, helped by the offer of two beers for one before KO! Let’s keep this going. I can’t still see beyond the Mancs for the title when you see who was on their bench yesterday- Walker, Doku, De Bruyne,Alvarez,Grealish etc,but hopefully, very soon, their 100 +charges will commence and the cheats punished. We can but hope.

I blame Arteta for his usual crass tactics in Europe. You can’t go and play for a 0-0 as you can get done by a mistake or last minute horror show. Secondly I blame that clown in the goal who someone on here rates for his distribution! How about positioning properly and stopping shots? In the 93rd minute this jerk instead of killing time and holding onto it hurls it forward as though we were after a winner- idiot. Lastly I blame Martinelli for that ridiculous ambitious pass to the opposition. We spend 90 minutes going backwards without a single shot on target and then try and win it- stupidity of the highest order. If we concede first at home, we’ve got a huge problem. We were crap tonight and as Rio said on commentary you can’t not create chances at this level.Whole team was very poor as was the manager.

Saw the whole game live as my elder son this season has got us a stream where we can watch any game any time anywhere.. Another great controlled performance. Like last week if we’d really bothered we could have got 10. Martinelli out three chances on a plate for Trosdard, Havertz and Nketiah and we missed a few more.Odegaard was brilliant so hope he can keep it up against better opposition. I’m trying to be as objective as possible with Havertz but until we scored the penalty he messed everything up- our only weak link.Ivwoyld have line to have seen ESR on sooner and hope he gets more game time in the weeks to come.Obto Porto which ent be easy and then the Magpies at home which I’m going to. Hopefully we can get some revenge for the blatant time- wasting from the first minute last season which they got away with. Small -minded overrated club that’s Newcastle.

I don’t usually reply to half- wits like you as you know, but will make an exception this once. You’re a complete hypocrite as well as thick. When we win, you’re all over this site like a rash. When we lose, you don’t even appear, check the thread after the Liverpool FA Cup loss- did you post, you merchant banker? I have no need to come on the minute the whistle blows after a game unlike you whose whole world is Teamtalk. Go back to your lap-dancing to Arteta and my post was to steve68, not an imbecile like you who has zilch football knowledge. Also, stop stalking my messages, they’re meant for adults, not you. After a week of wins against Liverpool and West Ham (“European Champions”!!!, what a cretin), you come on and indicate we’ve got a “very good manager”. When we lose, you say “time to move on to the next game”. You’re a fair weather “fan”, whom I suspect, only watches the hightlights. Now, go away and practise those lap-dancing moves for the next meeting with your idol.Foxtrot Oscar.

Great win and we thrashed the mouthy Hammers to shut them up. If we’d been even more clinical we could have had 9 or 10 as Saka said post-match (him and Trossard with misses). I hope we can keep this going as every match now seems to be a “must win”.I don’t think we’ll win the League as City can go on the sort of run they can without, until recently, De Bruyne and Haaland. We can’t do that and my major worry is that we cannot afford to give Gabriel, Saliba and Rice a rest. Saliba in particular has played every game I think and Gabriel almost as many, Even when we are cruising, the Frenchman stays on. With perma-crocks in Tomiyasu, Zinchenko, ESR, Partey and Jesus, rotation is not something we can ever seem to do. In addition, Arteta is loathe to introduce kids as Liverpool and evem United do. What was the sense in bringing on that cretin Cedric when we were 6-0 up? Walters can’t be trusted even then! I agree steve with your player plaudits. Just two questions- I still don’t see Havertz as the solution at number 8, against the best teams he’s nothing more than a nuisance and can’t shoot as we have seen. Also Raya, when he has anything to do, usually screws up. Lastly, much as we all now laugh at Emery’s time at the club, he introduced kids to the first team like Martinelli and Saka ad possibly ESR. Why doesn’t Arteta mix things up a bit and give Martinelli a go at number 9? He’s done it before and can finish well- also he can head the ball, which Saka, Trossard, Havertz, Nketiah and Jesus can’t.

Still much the worse for wear after too much booze straight after the game and have to say what a result! Great games from Rice, Jorginho and Martinelli. Why is the latter always taken off though even when he’s playing well? I said to my mate before the game that irrespective of how the game’s going, if Arteta starts with Martinelli and Jesus, Trossard and Nketiah will come on around 70 minutes! Didn’t know then that Jesus wouldn’t make it, but don’t keep knocking our left winger, he looked gutted when he came off…again. Trossard finally justified being included, but didn’t notice the deflection off the keeper until I got home. Liverpool were poor and a shadow of the team that butchered the Chavs in midweek, but due in no small measure to way we set up. I had my doubts when I saw Jorginho in the line up as I didn’t think his legs would last in such an intense game, but what a game he had- superb. On their goal,I agree Raya, if he had been decisive as good keepers are,he would have come out and cleared, but Saliba was at fault for believing we have a good keeper, so each were culpable. Now,let’s go to the Hammers and win next week, otherwise yesterday will count for nothing if we are meek and negative away from home again.

steve, possibly, but when Trossard came on on Tuesday we were 2-0 up, so naturally more space then for anyone to run at the opposition? Remember when Martinelli came on against Palace we were 3-0 up and he then scored twice on counter attacks? The decision to keep playing back and square is a result of our awfully slow build -up and no support on the left.

TSO, Arteta doesn’t rate Tierney (like he didn’t rate Martinez?!),so great judgement there. He’s convinced Zinchenko can play at the back- he can’t, where does he play for Ukraine? Why has Arteta never played him as anumber 8 for us instead of Havertz, for example- because the former didn’t cost £65m and the manager has to justify his stupidity.I think Tierney is great, but he’s out injured for the second time in Spain now, a sick note like Partey and Tomiyasu.Kiwior is also not a full back as we saw when he eventually came in for the guitar player,Holding at Newcastle last season and played great- we won 2-0! Now, many said we couldn’t play two left-footed centre halves, so the wretched Holding was allowed to play for the injured Saliba last season- we lost the League as a result after numerous mistakes by him, unsettled the rest of the back five and that never should have happened. And sorry, he’s not set his team up to be title contenders with this ridiculous slow, tippy- tappy rubbish, it gives every team hours to get everyone back and then we just continue going nowhere. But, somehow we’re in touch with the leaders. However, when you see who the Scousers had on the bench last night- Gakpo, Robertson, TAA and still missing Salah, I’m now very worried for Sunday!
