We need to get some facts right first. Firstly, the takeover had not been completed when the transfer window closed, so we did not have loads of money. Second : why have a Chairman from Blackburn, who had done nothing since Shearer was there 20 years ago? Thirdly, as somebody else pointed out, there have been enough folk join the club at Pulis’ call for him to get it right by now, but McLean, McManaman, Lambert and others have been nowhere near good enough, while he ignored Pocognoli and Gamboa. Clearly he cannot pick a decent buy. Next : line-ups have been sterile. I like Yacob, but we don’t need him at home against opposition we should be whipping – he becomes an unnecessary fifth defender and takes a shirt that should go to an attacking midfielder. Fifth : the football is indeed dire. Pulis is at fault with three of my five points. Pulis is quite definitely a huge part of a big problem.

Puzzled? Where’s anybody? Matt Philips in, Galloway in . . . Gamboa and Pocognoli out . . . but i’m not seeing anything happening that really excites me or closes a crucial deficiency. I reckon we’ll be stuck with Berahino, and we’ll be watching Craig Gardner yet again.

I’ve said it before and while Pulis is here I’ll probably have to say it again, but why oh why play Yacob at every home game when the opposition should finish the season in the bottom half of the table? He’s just part of that 4-5-1 set-up. The only guy who can play midfield and make a telling pass is Morrison, and there ain’t no room for him while the clown picks Fletcher and Yacob and then brings on Gardner.

There’s enough folk in this team that Pulis has either bought (McLean) or stuck by (Gardner) that it gives me no confidence for the season, and then there’s those he’s bought and abandoned (McManaman). What’s the point of Phillips if he’s withdrawn on his home debut? And then there are those he inherited and abandoned – Gamboa and Pocognoli. If they’re not good enough for a bench that has got kids on it, get rid of them. These are dark days.

Northwich says McLean might make crosses. Not a lot of evidence of that last season. He put in a shift in first few matches but went off badly. Wouldn’t make my first XI.
Derwent hopes for half-a-dozen new signings. That won’t happen.

I wouldn’t sell him until we’ve signed a damn good replacement. Contract offer makes sense in my book, and remember that in some respects it’s about who’s going to blink first – Berahino or JP. And it won’t be JP.

Chester or McAuley – that’s a tough call. Probably level-pegging in our box, but Gareth shades it in their box. Chester will be a great replacement when McAuley has to give way to age.

Spurs are looking at other folk. Does that leave only Stoke perhaps interested in Saido? He produced few worthwhile moments last season, so he cannot command much fee, but if his performances do not improve, he’s not worth a shirt anyway. Don’t hold out too much hope for next season – we’ve already (and still at the moment) got good players in Gamboa and Pocognoli that many of us would happily watch and support, but they never get a shout. No point buying any more.

In fact Sess was nothing like as good as folk think. This season was 2 goals and 2 assists, and that’s simply not enough from a key midfielder. (If my stats are wrong, they ain’t wrong by so much as makes a difference).

I agree it has not been the most inspiring season of recent times. Now some guys out of contract will be released and some guys will be sold. Our final position won’t be clear now until Bournemouth’s final fixture has been played, and then we get the resulting slice of money. The thing is, the players we have for sale will not attract much money, so we’ll have to make much better use of our financial resources than has been the recent case. We cannot keep spending, say, £1.4m on the likes of good Championship players like Gardner and McLean and hope to win and entertain. We always knew Anichebe was a waste of £6m in a panic move when Lukaku did not come back. Brown Ideye – how much did we lose there? This guy Hammond that we just recruited has got his work cut out.

TP’s successful signings? Well, Evans and Fletcher for two. Chester has been OK, and he’s one for the future when Gareth Mc retires.

It doesn’t do us any good changing manager every six months. Clearly there have been mistakes, but we’re still in the Premier League, not half-way down the Chumpionship or with just 17 points in this league, like our two dear neighbours. The whole Berahino episode upset the apple-cart from the start – how many goals did we get from him in 2014-15 that he failed to repeat this season? Difficult to blame TP for that. What use is Victor Anichebe? Can’t blame TP for that. Have we missed James Morrison – I think so, and we can’t blame TP for that. Is Gardner little more than a journeyman footballer who has the occasional great day but generally falls short? Well, he was here when TP arrived. Where we can criticise TP is the recruitment of Lambert (who initially impressed by putting in a shift but has been insufficiently creative) and McLean. Dawson’s had a decent season, so we can’t make a fuss about Gamboa, though we’d probably like too. We probably have grounds to criticise failure to play Pocognoli at left-back.

It’s no good talking to Stoke fans about TP. Better to ask Palace fans how good the football was when he saved their status. Let’s wait and see what changes in the summer.

Everton fans want Martinez out, Arsenal call for Wenger’s head, Watford aren’t sure about Flores . . . . all this manager merry-go-round stuff is nonsense. It’s recruitment that’s been the problem since Ashworth went, and JP’s appointed Nicky Hammond to fix it. Nobody can tell me the recruitment of the last two years has been good enough – look at Mclean, Rondon, Ideye before him, Anichebe . . . . these were all weak buys at the time, and that’s what TP has had to deal with.

Norway, I’m afraid JP will extend TP’s contract. What a strange and disappointing season, starting with the Berahino nonsense, recovering to 39 points, and then struggling to 40, to 41 . . . and losing some dreadful matches along the way, failing even to beat the Villa. Let’s look at the positives. We think we’ve got four good centre-halves plus Dawson at right-back. Sadly TP plays one of them at left-back in the absence of Brunt, when most of us cannot see for a moment why Pocognoli hasn’t had game-time. Many of us would like to see Gamboa at right-back but will grudgingly admit that Dawson has justified his place. But it’s in front of the defence we’ve had problems. There have been home games against poor teams where we’ve played Yacob, a defensive luxury when we should be attack, attack, attacking. On his day, Fletcher’s great, but some games he fails to influence. McLean impressed us to start with by putting in a shift, but his creativity is weak and his passing careless, added to a self-destructive temper. A poor signing. My word, we’ve missed James Morrison. I thought Sessegnon was on his way out of the club, but he applied himself and has been as good as anybody. Gardner huffs and puffs and comes up with some gems (at Chelsea and Leicester), but overall I still have him down as a very good Championship player. Berahino – desperately disappointing, but I can’t help but feel we’ll be sorry when he’s gone, as he surely will be. Rondon – oh dear, not a Premiership forward. Poor value for money. Lambert and Anichebe – waste of squad numbers. The thing is, though, I don’t think anybody deserves an accolade as player of the season.
