I keep hearing about how good our academy is – where are all these stars we are supposed to have developed?
Clarke – cant get a game. Gardner brothers ok journey men.Baker – championship at best.
Andreas Weimann – Championship if he can get a game, best of the bunch Cahill & Albrighton good players but not in the same class as Barkley, Stones, etc.
looking further back Vassell & gabby were good players, Mark Walters was a good player but again are they as good as Rooney, Wilshere – no they are not.
Why are teams like Everton able to find these gems and we are not ???February 17, 2016 at 4:14 pm #869614
I agree about academy players not fulfilling their potential, not at Villa any rate. When we won the Nextgen series a few years back it sounded like we had a great crop of youngsters coming through but where are they?
Players like Callum Robinson and Jerel Sellars show promise so why aren’t we playing them? It’s not like the 1st team is brimming with quality strikers! Garde says he’s not prepared to throw them into a relegation battle but goals win games and these kids would have fire in their bellies.
We have released academy players like Daniel Johnson who’s gone to Preston and scored 18 goals in 43 from midfield and replaced them with young french players for big money who seem no better!
Steven Davis went on to have a good career with Rangers and Southampton, Peter Whittingham 73 goals for Cardiff, and as you rightly say Albrighton and Cahill have both done very well after leaving us!
Apart from 5m for Cahill we let players go for nothing, we got 50k for Johnson!! Bad business as ever.February 18, 2016 at 3:40 pm #871642
Dan Crowley is our Jack Wilkshire.. its a shame Arsenal took him off us and decided not to ever play him, but he is top quality!
We have also got Grealish
How many gems have Everton brought through? John Stones was not an everton youth product they bought him from Barnsley.. Barclay and Rooney yes but thats over 10 years apart.
If you think about the amount of players that have come through our academy and played Premier league football at some point in the past 10 to 15 years my bets are we are equal if not better than most teams.. have we found the new Gazza? Not yet but who has!?
Off top of my head players that have come through: Gary Gardener, Craig Gardner, Weiman, Gabby, Albrighton, Grealish, Vassell, Barry (ok we took him at 16), Cahill, Delfonso, Steven Davis, Bannan, Luke and Stefan Moore
Don’t forget Daniel Sturridge was with us until he was 12 too, and he is probably the best young player in England!
that’s a pretty good list when you think about it.. taking a youth player through to premier league is no mean feet, and we have taken loads through..
plenty of things to knock Villa for but I think our academy is way down the list of issues we haveFebruary 22, 2016 at 10:18 am #877675
Jimmytwoshoes – I can see the list you have posted – Stefan More – seriously? delfonso – seriously? and what trees are the others pulling up other than Cahill & Albrighton.February 23, 2016 at 1:04 pm #879535
name a club that has brought in more peremier league players through their academy in the past 10 or 15 years?
They may not be the best but its a reflection of English talent not Villas academy.. most the best players in league are foreign or outstanding players from lower leagues that have been bought.. picking on our academy seems a strange battle to take on in my opinionFebruary 23, 2016 at 2:20 pm #879661
sorry but its not a reflection of english lack of tallent – wilshere, Stones, rooney, Buckland, Berkley, Walcott, Welbeck, Lallana, Ibe, Tom Carrol, Kyle Walker,Trippier, Dier, Ali, Zouma,Ward Prowse, Rodriguez, shaw, Creswell, but to name a few where are the equivalent talents from the villa ??? more to the point why are there no equivalent talent at the Villa currentlyFebruary 23, 2016 at 4:05 pm #879886
yes you have named a few.. im talking 10 to 15 years.. I repeat how many clubs have produced more premier league players..? you have listed a few players dotted around a number of clubs..
every club of course produces the odd player.. but how many clubs have a sustained programme of bringing players through to the premier league?
Southampton have brought a few through in past 5 or so years and are the stand out team.. (if you add bale and Oxlade to your list that is 6) other than that its hard to see where we are being out done..
I really do think you are way off the mark criticising our academy.February 23, 2016 at 4:28 pm #879898
oh and just looking at your list:
Stones (Barnsley Academy)
Buckland (Birmingham City Academy)
Kyle Walker (She Utd)
Dier (sporting Lisbon)
Zouma (Saint Etienne)
4 from Saints a couple from everton, one for spurs, one from Man U, one from Arsenal
I don’t think your list proves any point that we are fairing worse than any other premier league or Football league aacdemysFebruary 24, 2016 at 10:35 am #880903
Just because our academy is as bad as everyone else doesn’t make it ok does it?? The FA have a new English football DNA program which was released in the last few years, so very recently in football development terms. It will take time for the new program to come through so excluding the odd one of wonder kid we won’t be able to judge against current criteria until maybe 6-7 years down the line.
Irrespective of what others have, or have not produced, the fact of the matter is that it ours (and others) does not provide enough resource to the first team consistently which has to be part of the reason we are in such a state – albeit a small part. Put all the small parts together and you have a big problem that looks very much like Aston Villa.February 24, 2016 at 11:44 am #881053
the thread was about how bad our Academy is.. I dont believe it is.. I aslo dont believe its part of the totting up that has resulted in where we are now
Its like the old saying ‘ History is written by the Victors..’
we are on a down turn and history is being rewritten to suggest why that is!February 24, 2016 at 9:41 pm #882130
It’s ok finding good young players but they have to be given the chance to develop.Spurs have a brilliant system where they are either bringing young players through youth ranks and up to senior squad, players like Kane,Carroll,Rose..or scouting talented young players and developing them,Dier,Walker, lamela,Alli,.we have the youngest squad in premier league and if Spurs can do this then Villa should be able to as well. Why couldn’t Villa have scouted and bought Alli or Dier for example.Villa need to structure themselves from the bottom up..develop or buy young talented players, mix them with some experienced players who will be leaders.Every player should be proud to play for Villa and all sing from the same hyme sheet..anyone not pulling their weight should be dumped immediately. The performance against Liverpool was simply shameful with no fight in the hearts of players and Garde appears clueless.Villa are a great club with a proud history and it is sad to see their demise..get rid of the dead wood and build again and hopefully you will be back in premier league in no time againFebruary 25, 2016 at 9:29 am #882568
We were watching Deli Ali all last season, we spoke to him and offered him a deal.. he turned it down to go to spurs.. a good move!February 25, 2016 at 10:45 am #882703
jimmytwoshoes – Jimmy i am not slagging off the academy I acknowledge that they have brought through some average players but who has gone on to be good enough to play regularly for England whilst still at Villa? not one that I can name. My question is WHY is this? when other clubs seem to be able to do this on similar size clubs with similar budgets for example Southampton, Everton,March 9, 2016 at 12:21 pm #907294
Samir Carruthers has made a statement that supports my initial post re the academy read it on “newsnow aston villa”
