Amazing to see that Daniel Agger as captain leads Denmark against Ibrahimovic et al with 10 mins gone at time of this post. Yes Bentdner also plays but to see Agger leading his country in a play off for Euro 2016 containing players like Eriksen, Kjaer, Fischer etc. when he was released by Rodgers raises some real questions in my mind.
perhaps FSG thought his salary was too much. Goodness knows how much he’d have saved us and won us by now though!
OK I’ll look silly if they lose 8-0 over two legs but in my mind Agger was one of our best defenders of recent times (post 2005 CL). If he’s fit enough to play, never mind lead the side that suggests to me LFC have messed up – at the moment he looks like the player I loved as he’s absolutely in command and looking classy.
Perhaps he can’t play two games in a week but I look forward to seeing how they get on tonight and if he plays in the return leg.
I think he’s another case of a player not too impressed by some of BR’s ideas and the fact that he didn’t play him. The truth is that Agger was never fast – but didn’t need to be in a decent side with a decent coach. BR needed super-fast defenders to make up for the holes his kamikaze coaching and selections posed problems. Our subsequent defensive record since he left doesn’t exactly justify his departure.
He is a defensive leader of the calibre we need right now. How much to take him back Jurgen ???

Redrob, I was making that Agger point to Paxman awhile ago but we couldn’t agree so I left the subject. I know Daniel said he couldn’t take the rigors of the premiership anymore, but I don’t think he is more fragile than Kolo. I think if Brendan had wanted Agger to stay he could have persuaded him to. There was a few months early on when Brendan froze out Skrtel but he scored his way back into the team. The club offered Martin a contract renewal which was quite basic & for players with a history of injuries. He turned it down and signed an improved contract. I think Agger’s departure was about injury record & the wages he was on. It will be interesting to see what kind of contract renewal Sturridge is offered. YNWA

Yes I agree Sanj – BR could easily have offered him a deal with fewer games. Our loss. Same as they did with Stevie G perhaps?
It’ll be very interesting if Gerrard returns in some role.

Rob, the contract for Stevie came after he had decided to leave, partly because they didn’t offer him a new contract. That was the reason the club almost lost him to Chelsea after Istanbul. It was only loyalty that made him stay. He might be back in some coaching capacity. If Giggs can be learning under Van Gaal, why not. YNWA

Even a Half Fit Daniel Agger would be better than nearly all we have Centrally Defense wise at Anfield, Ridiculous to have let him go IMO.

That tw@t of an ego let Daniel Agger go, just like he let Martin Kelly go, but hey-ho, HE never let Joe Allen GO!

He bought Joe Allen, I don’t think Brendan let any of his signings go did he? Martin Kelly & Jonjo both potentially had a LFC future

I notice history is being re-written on these pages.Daniel Agger at his best was an excellent skillful centre back. In his last couple of seasons he was becoming injury prone and seemed not to relish the physical demands of his position.Give me a fit Sakho any day!

Spodge, the point is Sakho is out injured. It would be good to have someone like Agger in this situation as cover though Lovren might improve under Jurgen YNWA

I’d have loved to have seen Agger and Sakho play together at the Back.

Spodge: Agger made 65 appearances in his final 2 season, not too bad for someone who according to you is injury prone.

In the summer of 2012, there was huge rumblings of city and Barca wanting agger for 30m. Agger seriously regressed from the minute Rodgers walked in. Not sure whether it was Rodgers coaching or just agger himself. He was constantly letting forwards get in in front of him. Dzeko, van persie, McCauley and giroud all stole a yard on him to score a header or a tap in. Brilliant player but his defending had got to bits.

Agger has said that indeed he had issues with Rodgers but then he came out and said his body couldn’t hack it anymore in the Premier League. Make your mind up Danny. But that’s an issue right there redrob, how can we build defensive stability if the manager knows that one of his leading centre backs can’t play two games in one week? There’s times he may HAVE TOO but if he physically can’t then that’s a problem. Imagine if that was the case for Lawro or Hansen back in the day? Not on your nelly. Sakho was outperforming Agger on most defensive stats (92% tackle success for Sakho compared to Agger’s 74% is just one) so Agger’s days were numbered since Sakho came to the club. Brendan wanted a more commanding centre back and he found one in MS. With Agger’s inconsistent health and performance record and the fact he was likely on very decent wages it just made sense in the end to part ways. I liked Agger, a natural ‘bring the ball out of the back’ defender and on his day could defend but too many major things were going against him hence his departure. We may on.

I think that Agger lived on his potential for a long time. Early on and I guess even a fair bit into his time here he looked like he might go on to be one of the best centre backs in the world.

It never happened though. Whatever about injuries, he was far too often caught out of position when the ball was crossed in only to see us concede as a result. I’m sure that many on here will get the pitchforks out for me by suggesting that but I too had high hopes for him and honestly, I wouldn’t have him take either Sakho or Skrtels place in the team in a million years. Skrtel for me is a highly under-rated centre back who I think many Liverpool fans don’t rate and I just don’t get why not? Yes he will make a real pigs ear out of something the odd time but in general he is the perfect centre-back. The amount of times that he gets his body in between the keeper and a shot has to be credited. These are all occasions when the keeper doesn’t have to be tested. For me then, Sakho is finally getting the praise that his abilities deserve and it’s a real shame that he got injured as I’d like to have seen how his season might have unfolded with the fans singing his name. . . Hopefully he can pick up where he left off though.

My point was that all issues of injuries, body couldn’t hack it, pace, whatever don’t really hold water if Agger captains his national side in the play offs and further so if Denmark reach Euro2016!
A lot of these reasons might be convenient to Agger (or BR) to avoid embarassment.

It seems obvious that there are more issues here as Sean says – a lot of the problem must lie with BR and his coaching and defensive setup – cos let’s face it he NEVER got the defence right.
His setup relied on FBs charging forwards and leaving holes which were difficult to plug hence Skrtel, Agger, Lovren, Toure, Sakho, et al have all had their issues looked silly as has Mignolet.
BR’s teams needed fast pacy defenders to cover the gaps but Agger was more an organised back four specialist in terms of leadership and organisation – something sadly lacking under BR.
Don’t think we’d have conceded recent goals with DA in the side.
I really hope DA has a stormer and gets to the finals and prove BR wrong next year.

DA never really fulfilled his potential with us and as rob rightly said not sure whether injuries didn’t take there toll (he himself mentioned about the rigours of the EPL).

Even if Denmark progress, I am not sure that proves any of our previous managers wrong as international setup is way different than playing consistently week in, week out in a league like ours. Successive managers have played DA without him ever being the single lynch pin for the defence.

That said the potential he had was right up there with the best CB around. Great player who never quite fulfilled his potential for me.
