Having seen how openly the media have embraced Arsene Wenger after Arsenal finally posted a win against an AC Milan side which was heavily reliant on the attacking flair of Suso the Liverpool reject, I have to pose the question to Arsenal fans:

If Arsene Wenger wins the Europa League is all forgiven? Must he continue to manage the club?

As an outsider, it’s obvious that Arsenal fans would have a sense of relief after finally winning a meaningful fixture but they should be careful not to exhibit the same Stockhom Sydrome which has brought the club to their knees in recent years.

Something tells me a deep run into the Europa (whether they win or not), will keep the Arsenal fans satisfied that they are a competitive team and then they will have the cycle repeated again next season – a couple of decent signings has them happy before they realize the tactics and management is pants about 10-15 games into next season. Rinse and repeat.

Arsene Wenger has beaten the fans into submission. He seems to have mastered the management of fan expectation by giving them hope, taking it away and then giving it back when all seems lost.

Any Arsenal fans care to comment?

No it wont, if the choice is Cup and AW stays or no Cup and AW goes then no cup for me, if we win it i will of course enjoy the fact its churlish not to but it will be followed by great dissapointment as AW signs a 10 year extension!

its not that he manages the fan expectation its the fact we know we have no choice thanks to the owners….and yes it has got the stage where any win is a joy (and surprise!) but it cant go on forever, within the next 3 years we will have a new manager so its just the waiting game

@ashcfc. The title is the best analogy I could come up with to describe him. A malignant cancer with a win being the temporary remission. No offence intended to any people who might have been affected by the disease directly or indirectly.

@steveosnakeeye. I guess the difference in expectation comes in with the board and fans but why is it that the Arsenal fans cannot protest at all? I remember when the United fans were quite vocal and visual in their green and gold campaign – it got a response from the Glazers.

My feeling is the Arsenal fans are too placid and are allowing this to continue without showing the board and the manager any real pain. It will be interesting to see how full the stadium is against Watford on Sunday or if the “stay-away protest” as seen against City will continue.

Hatters, many of those who suffer with and are fighting Cancer would find the title of your thread more than a bit flippant I would suggest.

@nine nine nine. I am just as flippant in real life and no offence is intended. I have never been one to take offence at words but I know others are so in that light I apologize to anyone who has been offended.

Bad analogy aside, the point of the thread is to see if any Arsenal fans have been hoodwinked by the win.

@nine nine nine. You’re a moderator so perhaps you can change the title to: “Arsene Wenger – Should He Stay if Arsenal Win the Europa?”

How very fickle football fans are. AW did revolutionise English football, and for 10 years he and his Arsenal team not only won trophies for fun, played the beautiful game the way it was meant to be played. No other EPL club plays anywhere the attractive football that AW teams did for 10 years. Unfortunately the EPL & many English clubs have sold their souls to the money men. However that said AW should have left last season on the back of the FA Cup win over Chelsea. For a man that has given English football and fans some of the leagues greatest teams to be pilloried and insulted shows a distinct lack of respect. No I am not an Arsenal fan, but I do think that AW deserves the respect for his overall record. There are some really nasty vindictive excuses for football fans out there.

Hatters, you’re one of the good guys on here mate so I know you didn’t mean any offence but it’s a horrible disease and imo shouldn’t be used flippantly.

I shouldn’t use my Moderator functions on here as they are only Chelsea forum related but if you confirm back to me that you would like me to change the thread title for you and it’s your choice then I’m sure that could be done without causing a problem to the Ed and or anyone else. Cheers 999

On the point that the thread makes. I’m not sure any fans could do much more than the Arsenal fans have to show their unhappiness with Wenger continuing there’s been marches, banners, protests, boycotting of games, protests at shareholder meetings and petitions to the owner and Board.

My hope for Wenger himself who has given so much to Arsenal and English football is that he wins the Europa League restoring Arsenal to the Champions League and resigns at a high point.

I think he deserves that but I think the Arsenal fans now deserve to have their message heard too!

Hatters, I’ve always said that I just don’t get where the idea comes from that Arsenal fans change their mind over Wenger, depending on that week’s result. That was until I heard Keown talking last night after the game. Suddenly he was talking as though Wenger is going to win the entire tournament and thereby save his job, when a week ago, he was talking about how it was clearly the end of the road.

I can’t speak for celebrity Gooners, pundits or for the majority of the weirdos that populate social media but I don’t know a single Gooner who would change their mind about Wenger if we won the EL, whether they’re in the ‘in’ or ‘out’ camp. I do know a lot like Steveo who are at such a stage of frustration and desperation that they’d actually sacrifice winning anything, as long as Wenger walks. I get that thinking, even if I’m not quite there yet.

For me personally, it was just good to enjoy watching my team again and I’m trying not to think too much beyond that. There’s a long, long way to go – on our recent form, I wouldn’t even bet that we’ll still be in next Friday’s draw, so it seems a bit premature to be talking about whether Wenger will save his job by winning the thing but no, it wouldn’t change my mind about wanting him gone, if he did. It would actually be the perfect time for him to walk away, with one last major trophy and finally winning something in Europe.

@nine nine nine. Thanks for making the adjustment mate.

@al. Your thoughts are noted. I hope that, for your sake Arsenal will in fact jettison the progressive disease of Wenger.

I wonder if the players actually “got it together” for the Milan game as opposed to the performance being attributable to Wenger.
