Let’s not pretend this isn’t a fantastic signing for the club. The best right back in Europe last season, statistically. He’s young, English and only 21 years old. We’ve missed an actual right back for a very long time and last season this was our weakest position at times. A player for now and a player for the future, if he keeps developing as he is £45m will be an absolute steal considering a 27 year old Kyle Walker went to City for a similar fee 2 years ago. (Before the stupid Neymar and Coutinho deals).

Identifying the weak positions and filling it with this type of quality is exactly what City and Liverpool have been praised for doing in the last few years.
AWB is a very promising signing.

The lad has loads of potential but I fear it will be wasted if Pogba and Lingard are allowed to rule the dressing room as they have.

Lads got potential, if we can concentrate on developing it rather than pile on the pressure and expectation then he’ll come on in leaps and bounds. Very exciting signing but only time will tell

Hopefully in time he will progress to be a world class for years, unlike fat Luke.

Yep, totally agree – he needs to step up now and become a leader of that backline. Seems a very quiet lad though, hopefully makes up for that with passion and desire.

    3 more to follow hopefully…

I remember the expectancy when Fat Like signed. That’s why I’m tempering my expectations

Redblood – I think it’ll be 3 more this summer and that will be quite a good start with James and AWB. The key now is to shift Darmian and Rojo at least.

I don’t think we’re going with the scattergun approach if previous seasons. Yes, we still need a DoF but we seem to be a bit more selective in who we’re signing. Yes, there’s rumours of de Ligt and Koulibaly but in reality I think we’re only going for a few players. I think we’ll try for Maddison/Brooks and possibly Longstaff (who Pep was full of praise for, which means he has potential) and a CB if the right one comes available. We’ll need to sell at least one of Pogba and Lukaku to finance all that though.

We’re taking a punt on young prospects being able to do the job now and develop into stars in the coming years. Its a gamble and our track record hasn’t been good in this respect.

If it turns out well then great but if not I just hope we move him on fast and he doesn’t end up like Shaw. Anyhow, I’d rather take a bet on prospect than a proven on his way down the hill.

@happy – I see you;re popping the champagne just like you’ve done for every signing including Darmian & Rojo. Last season you were touting Dalot as a “fantastic signing” who would be the long term solution at RB.

The danger with somebody like AWB is they get into the mindset they’ve made it, they’ve reached the top of the mountain and all they have to do is stay under the radar to stay there. He hasn’t had to win his place by pushing a veteran star out and doesn’t have serious competition (unless Dalot improves). He doesn’t have to perform to get more wages, come next contract talk time his wage demands will be determined by the differentials at the club so he can expect to be on Shaws 200k or more.

England is not the team of yesteryear nor is playing for England the prize it used to be. There’s no bigger name than United so no bigger club to move to, he’s at the top of the ladder. His team mates are not like Keane, pushing for sporting excellence. Instead they’ll lead him into the lifestyle and mindset of Pogba.

On the plus side there is a Ole to guide him but all things considered the odds are stacked against young players making the transition from prospects to legends. Hope I’m wrong but fear I’m not.

    Fantastically optimistic as usual Mac!

On paper it looks a great signing – a young English player with amazing statistics. Now we just have to hope that he fulfills the expectations of him which has been a problem for pretty much all our signings since Fergie left.

Looking at YouTube highlights, he sometimes looks like he can’t play football to save his life and in others he looks like Cafu reborn. Haven’t watched enough of him during the season to be able to tell what we’re getting exactly but if we can guide him into being a proper attacking outlet down the right, it will enough.

Sympathy – my mate is a Palace season ticket holder. He is absolutely devastated! He’s been telling me for months that we’re not getting him. Reckons he’ll go on to be the outright best right SCM in Europe next couple of seasons. Nickname is spider coz he has really long legs and even if he’s beaten (only happened 10 tines last season, no other full back was beaten less) he somehow manages to put in a last ditch tackle.
Again it’s all if and buts at this stage – let’s hope Mac is wrong and the glare of Old Trafford isn’t too much for him!

@happyhurling – hope you and your mate are right my friend! In terms of defending I don’t think we will have any cause for concern as, like you said, he seems capable of defending against anybody. It’s more the attacking part of the game I have reservations about as we need someone to bomb down the wing and get the ball in the box – something we’ve lacked down both flanks for a number of years.

    Cheers

He was a winger until recently enough, he only changed to FB/WB under De Boer so the attacking side of his game should be reasonably strong.

If he was a winger before and good as defending as reports say then i have high hopes.

At the very least it’s good competition on that side now with Dalot hopefully stepping up as well. Hopefully get 3 more signings in quickly…

It would be a pleasant surprise/shock were we to sign Donny & Longstaff for that midfield,Matic to depart to China/ME,Lukaku to Inter, and Sanchez to anywhere/Jupiter,Saturn…..
Wonder what happened to activating Alderweirelds release clause of £25m?? Plus,we need Bailly to go,too.
