Does it get any bigger than this?
This is the ninth historical meeting between the two teams with a W3, D3 and L2 record.
Last time we met was in the last 16 of the CL back in 06/07 when we prevailed 2-1 in Spain (Bellamy, Riise), lost at home in the return leg 1-0 but went through on away goals. Starting XI in that 1st leg at Barca : Reina, Arbeloa, Finnan, Agger, Carragher, Riise, Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko, Bellamy and Kuyt in a 4231.
We then went onto beat PSV in the quarters, Chelsea in the semi’s and of course lost to Milan in the Final.
Barcelona’s record in the CL this season is played 10, W7 and D3 (Away at Lyon, Inter and Home to Spurs).
Our record is played 10, W6, D1 an L3.
Barcelona wrapped up another La Liga title on Saturday with a narrow win over Levante with Messi coming off the bench replacing Phil to score the winner. 83 goals scored in 33 league games is mightily impressive but they don’t boast the best defence with Getafe, Atletico and Valencia all with better goals against records.
Despite their brilliance with the ball you can create chances against them with their 433 formation so it’ll be interesting to see if Klopp matches that formation numbers wise or goes 4231 and puts an extra body or two in the engine room. If he does go 4231 maybe this?: Alisson, TAA, Matip, VVD, Robbo, Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Keita, Mane, Salah and Origi up top. Just don’t think Bobby will be fit and I am mildly concerned about the severity of his ankle issue. We could also quite easily see that line-up in the 433 too. Just got a sneaky that Milner will come in for this leg so conject away folks.
My prediction is a draw in the 1st leg (1-1) and a home win in the 2nd (2-1). Ajax will beat Spurs in the other Semi and we then beat Ajax in the Final and finish 2nd in the League so put that in your pipe…..!April 29, 2019 at 6:25 pm #1746809
Last time we met Barcelona in the CL we beat then at the Nou Camp so I don’t see why we cannot do it again tomorrow.
For a start, they will not have faced forwards as dangerous as Salah and Mane in recent times. Mane, in particular seems to relish playing (and producing) against the biggest teams.
Of course our midfield and defence will have to be at their absolute best to shackle the likes of Messi, and I can see a more defensive midfield lineup being used, with at least 2 of Fabinho, Wijnaldum and Henderson starting. Then bring on Keita to stride effortlessly through the big pitch.
This time we have a team that is good enough and we must aim to win the competition, regardless of what happens in the leagueApril 29, 2019 at 6:31 pm #1746814
Agree, Song, balls to wall in the Champions League, beat Newcastle to force City’s hand once more and then hope Leicester get something two days later at the Etihad but for me, now, the CL has to be #1 over the League. We have control over this whereas the league is totally dependent on City slipping up (despite being 10 points ahead of them immediately following the Arsenal game….argh!).April 29, 2019 at 7:11 pm #1746820
Rob, win either this time and we’ll be very happy.
Though it’s the PL that most fans want, myself includedApril 29, 2019 at 7:19 pm #1746826
I know Song, same here. Klopp will want to win every game we know that and we all want to win every game but, for me, the next 3 CL games are the must winners. Let’s be crowned Champions of Europe which will be the ultimate fillip we need to get over City pipping us to the title by one point.April 29, 2019 at 7:58 pm #1746841
Liverpool are the only English team to have beat Barca away.
And we’ve done it twice.
Our record against them is pretty good and now we’re going there with one of the best Liverpool teams assembled.
Perhaps a team such as..
TAA, Matip, VVD, Robbo,
Hendo, Fabinho, Wij,
Salah, Firmino, Mané
As always it’s the midfield where you can’t second guess Klopp. These kinda games we would normally see Milner start. Still very much a possibility.April 29, 2019 at 8:10 pm #1746844
Ginger, yes, would not be surprised to see Milner, Wijnaldum and Fabinho all start. Bobby is the biggest issue we have tho right now. A small groin tear does not sound too good. If he is missing then Sturridge or Origi could come in or move Mo up top with Shaqiri on the right. A billion permutations!April 29, 2019 at 9:36 pm #1746860
Most likely Origi to start, if Bobby is still injured, and on the left wing where his pace and energy can do damageApril 29, 2019 at 9:57 pm #1746863
I think Firmino will be good to go.April 30, 2019 at 10:17 am #1746946
As much as I want us to win, it really does not matter how good we play, if Messi turns up then we will struggle…If big if, if Messi has a bad day and we turn up then we can definitely harm Barcelona..
A good situation in a bad day where Messi turns up is if we do not drop heads and also hit Barca back with our own attack – end of the day the away goal will be very importantApril 30, 2019 at 10:24 am #1746952
If both Salah and Mane turn up, Barcelona will be in serious troubleApril 30, 2019 at 10:41 am #1746955
I dont care how this sounds but we are one of two best teams in world football with only City being a better side and Barca has nothing on us. I gonna be really surprised if they score, even on Nou Camp.
Its gonna go 0-3 for Liverpool or at best for Barca, 1-3 for Liverpool.
Virgil is gonna score one of the goals.April 30, 2019 at 12:46 pm #1747005April 30, 2019 at 6:57 pm #1747116
We gonna win 2-1 at the nou camp.April 30, 2019 at 8:37 pm #1747134
I’d be very happy with an away score draw. Ajax look like they’ll be in the final already!May 1, 2019 at 4:03 am #1747168
“Last time we met Barcelona in the CL we beat then at the Nou Camp so I don’t see why we cannot do it again tomorrow.”
Not one of the players from that day is still in the team, so it’s completely irrelevant. I think we definitely have a chance of beating them on their own turf but for other reasons.May 1, 2019 at 4:08 am #1747169
Narthraal, I love and understand the enthusiasm. There are many reasons why this could be a good win for us. Our ability to absorb and counter-attack could serve us really well here. of course we might even have spells where we put them on the back foot with an intense high pressing strategy.
I do however think that we’ve got to respect them a little more. Are we really one of the 2 best in the world? I’d love to say yes and you might be right but I think the proof is in the pudding here. We’ve 2 games against them to see how we compare to them.
I’m reasonably confident but I won’t go further than that, yet.May 1, 2019 at 5:10 am #1747170
Im worried robbo and trent will be pinned back so our attacking threat may be reduced significantlyMay 1, 2019 at 5:12 am #1747171
As good as our fullbacks have been their only weakness has been trying to defend a long crossfield ball over their heads. I hope that doesnt happen too much. And we must not give any FK away in and around the edge of our boxMay 1, 2019 at 6:13 am #1747172
I too am very shocked at how so many already seem to think we will definitely get a result there. That’s complacency at its worst and in this age of social media, it will filter down to the players.
