But look at Lallana for example, he was massive for us, even though he was mostly injured in his final years… He was such a big character that it would have been lethal for us to sell him, it would have devastated the lads and made them think about their own commitment to the project…

Sturridge also played his part while injured, Ings another one… We can´t force the players to move, it just goes against policy, the last time that happened was with Sakho… I´m still unhappy with how the management dealt with it, he was given a very rotten card to play…

Its also one of the values that Lebron and his company value, it goes for all players, why should we sell Matip and keep Van Dijk… I know why but Matip would be upset and the rest of the lads would be upset, cause its not just football, its their career and their friends career we are talking about… Matip would likely have to take a pay-cut unless he could cash in but we would be forcing him into a corner with his negotiations so that would be unlikely…

On the other hand if we just stick with him for the remainder of his contract, then he got ample time to set up his next move and could decide his own future… We don´t need to sell him for the funds, we don´t need his transfer value, when his contract is up… That goes for all of them, Keita could just leave when his contract is up, same goes for Shaqiri… The only one I would like to stay is Gomez for the longrun, he is only 23 years old and he is home grown…

How very socialist of you. These guys are paid outrageous amounts of money weekly through thick and thin and their contracts are honoured by the club. But there is nothing wrong with trying to cut your losses when someone is unable to fulfill their side of the deal. I totally support the standing by a player who has had an unfortunate long term injury or two or three. Of course that’s only right and proper. But when a player is never fit and totally unreliable then it may be in the best interest for the team and for the player to maybe take part in a less demanding league or at least a less physically demanding team and style of play. As to when that’s a reasonable conclusion is debatable. I didn’t want Ings to go, but thought Sturridge lingered too long. Lallana probably called it himself at the right time. Sakho was encouraged out due to his poor attitude not his injury record.

I think we’re stuck with Keita until he leaves on a free transfer. Who would buy him? I mean maybe we could find some club whoa re willing to risk 5-8m on him but I can’t see even Edwards getting more than that for a player who has had about 45 injuries since he joined us.

As for this match, it’s a shame but also kinda predictable that neither of the new lads will be starting. We’ll have to wing it but having no Matip for any of the 90, unlike the last day will make it very difficult on us.

I hope we start with Shaqiri and keep Ox off the pitch until perhaps as an impact sub, I don’t think he’s good enough overall to be starting, even though he does have his moments. he has a cannon of a foot. If the game is too soon for Fabinho or Mane, that does make things difficult for us but we should have enough quality out there to win, they just have to keep the resurgence going.

Ox is a bit of an enigma right now. If he can perform at the level that he did when VVD joined then he’s a very useful player. Either he will never attain that level or he just needs game time to get back to his best. The only way is to get him in the first eleven as much as possible and Brighton game would suit the slightly experimental side attached to his inclusion from the start.

He hasn’t been the same player since his knee injury. Whether that’s physical or mental remains to be see.
Perhaps something to keep in mind when expecting VVD and Gomez to come back and perform straight away again.

Considering the injuries and new boys not being ready yet, I can see it being the same lineup as the previous game, except Jones in for Milner, and Firmino for Origi.

Got to be very careful here against a dangerous opponent, we have to dominate the game from start to finish and get the 3 points without any drama

MrMak “I think we’re stuck with Keita until he leaves on a free transfer.”

Absolutely, unless he can somehow turn it round like Ings, he’s actually our worst big signing (£53m) in terms of injuries since Aquilani

Ox came on the other night and made a great contribution to the team goal. He is a very clever player when fit and up to speed. It’s just keeping these players fit with the high intensity football we play.

I concur re Keita. We won’t be able to sell him for remotely close to his purchase fee so we have to continue working on his fitness both recovering from current injury and mitigating risk of future injuries.

Milner surely won’t start this game and Jones looked good so he’ll be back in. Firmino to start and score.

We don’t have a squad as deep as Man City, Man United or Chelsea. We don’t have their finances. We were always going to struggle to ride out injuries. All things considered we’re doing ok but if we lose Alisson for any extended period of time I’d write off any hope of retaining the title. I still have some for now!

Brighton’s got a few issues of their own (from Sky Sports). Ten quid, btw, whoever can say that last surname.

Brighton will assess Joel Veltman and Alexis Mac Allister ahead of the trip to Anfield.

Defender Veltman was feeling muscle tightness following the weekend win over Tottenham, while creative midfielder Mac Allister has a minor gluteal issue.

Forward Danny Welbeck, who has not featured since December 27 due to a knee problem, remains out but could be fit for the weekend trip to Burnley. Tariq Lamptey and Alireza Jahanbakhsh (both hamstring) also continue to be sidelined.
