What I can’t understand is how people say Carrick isn’t great because he’s been poor / out of the side for the last 3 or 4 years (in his mid-30s at the time) yet the same people were happy to give Rooney god-status when he left the club last summer even though he hadn’t performed decently in 3 years (in his late 20s) just because he’s our all-time top goal scorer. People need to measure players value beyond numbers, especially someone like Carrick who plays in a position which is not at all about numbers.
On the actual Carrick being good or not debate, we will never have an answer for this. If people don’t rate Carrick for the type of player he is fair enough, not everyone can see / accept that type of game play. Personally, I follow what a number of top professionals think in that he is underrated, especially seeing how poor our build-up play has become since he’s been out of the side the last few years. Our build-up only picked up after a 100m, widely-accepted world class player came into our team so I think that alone shows that it takes a certain level of player to make a team tick. I maintain that, if we had a player of his mould and skill of when he was 25 years old in our team today we’d be a much, much better side.

@fatrooney. I will be the first to admit that Carrick should have been replaced many years ago but as I said, that is not his job. Any sportsman will back themselves to be able to play at the highest level and if the club continues to renew his contract then the blame lies squarely with the hierarchy.
In any case, I think Carrick was the glue that kept us ticking at his peak and he was a guaranteed starter in what was arguably the best team SAF ever assembled. His body of work speaks for itself.
January 22, 2018 at 8:59 am #1586573JM – No, I don’t think you will find anyone who has anything good to say about Theresa May!!
January 22, 2018 at 10:47 am #1586651Regardless of his ability, which will always be disputed, there are very few players where everyone will say, ‘Yes, he was fucking amazing.’ To get that universal adulation is rare. Carrick was a dedicated player, who always gave his all to the club. I know this seems like a contradiction in terms but he seemed to be equally underrated and overrated at the same time. Many thought he was thought highly enough of and many thought he was too highly thought of. He has been a divisive figure from a fans point of view. However, just look at this peach against Roma in 2007, he didn’t just pass sideways… sometimes anyway….
And goal number 4, also against Roma:
January 22, 2018 at 11:51 am #1586675Fuck me,for Jesus Christ’s sake not yet another mind numbing 20 page debate about the merits or otherwise of Michael ‘effin Carrick!.
Somebody seriously needs to get out more!.January 22, 2018 at 12:20 pm #1586699Hear hear Blacky…nothing new whatsoever being added here that hasn’t been said a hundred times and more on many many previous threads. Save your fingers lads.
Struggling to think of a single other United player who has divided opinion among reds as much and as spectacularly as Carrick.
January 22, 2018 at 12:51 pm #1586716I’m sure I can find plenty of quotes from ex footballer praising Darren fletcher, valrmcia and even John Oshea. @hatters he was the only defensive midfielder we had at the club so was going to be a guaranteed starter. Injuries to Hargreaves and calamity signings like djemba djemba prolonged his career. As for the roma goals, how often did he actually performe like that. Too often he just did the basics in between vidic and rio and fergie covered up his bad signings by saying carrick is the best midfielder around. At beet after the rome final carrick should have been a back up to someone who was more dynamic and played in bigger games to make the midfield compact like fletcher did
January 22, 2018 at 1:24 pm #1586736All @hatters is saying @fatrooney matey,is that is was not Carrick to be blamed for him being kept ‘ the club for so long.I would go as far as saying that players like Carrick,Valencia,Young,Fellaini,Jones,Samalling, would have never been signed in the 1st place, not @ a club like United.Carrick should have been replaced long time ago,it was SAF who refused to do the right thing by telling us-“there is no value in the market” bullshite!
January 22, 2018 at 1:29 pm #1586739I would much rather have the young Carrick over 100 Herrera,Mata,Fellaini and even Matic.
January 22, 2018 at 4:15 pm #1586845fatrooney – If you can find a similar quote for Fletcher, O’Shea and co. from similar players like Xavi and Xabi Alonso, etc. then I’m all ears. In fact, aside from Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard, I’ll expand the pool of players to any other English midfielder during Carrick’s career receiving multiple praises from across Europe.
January 22, 2018 at 4:22 pm #1586848I have a quote I am about to share that is going to make you look a right dick manthistle.
January 22, 2018 at 5:05 pm #1586858“The player I like is Butt. He’s a tremendous midfielder, he’s a good marker and he’s passionate. Butt gets forward and he passes well. – Pele

January 22, 2018 at 5:57 pm #1586880Ha ha ha, Nicky Butt, Pele, ha ha. Nice one Tommy.
January 22, 2018 at 7:27 pm #1586936Anything on Fellaini,no?
January 22, 2018 at 7:56 pm #1586963“Fellaini was the trawler that my seagulls followed in to the sea. But he gave this Manchester side much more than sardines. He played for this team with passion and heart, he created a great celebration of poetry and music, to watch Fellaini play was like combining the grace of Nureyev with the charm of Otto Griebling. His elbows conducted a symphony like Simon Rattle.” – Eric Cantona.
January 22, 2018 at 8:52 pm #1587008Bloody hell.
January 22, 2018 at 9:29 pm #1587032No that was Fergie, talking about football.
January 23, 2018 at 9:49 am #1587211Any superlatives for Messi Lingard and Ashley-“Roberto Carlos” Young?
January 23, 2018 at 11:00 am #1587281When I watched him make his debut at Vicarage Road, Ashley Young made me feel like a teenager again. And my legs started to quiver.” – Elton John
January 23, 2018 at 11:28 am #1587293Not sure if Elton was on about Young’s football ability though
