Draw in a few hours would obviously like to get Porto. Some good players there might be an audition for one or two of the brightest of the bunch.

Porto look the weakest but they are all good teams as always at this stage. Fancy us against Dortmund although everything Haarland touches turns into a goal at the moment!

I fancy City’s luck in cup draws will finally run out and they will draw Bayern. For us anyone but those two really, but I wouldn’t see us as strong favorites against anyone.

Didn’t want to start a new thread. I know this was made back when we were still in it but, taking that and looking at our chances of qualifying for it next season :

This weekend really made a big difference to our chances, with some poor results for 3 of our 4 rivals for a CL place. We managed a pretty unconvincing win, no need to go into that but it’s 3 points. What is worth looking at though is how over the last 6 6 matches, we have the next best form in the PL.

All eyes on Utd V Leicester. I don’t agree that Ole will play the reserves or anything, at least not to spite us. He’s a professional, if he drops players, it’ll be for footballing reasons. Even if Leicester beat Utd, they’ve got 2 other tough games, although, they will be less tough by the time comes, due to the usual settling into reality that you get as leagues close out and teams have little to play for. I still think at least one of them will beat Leicester though, who knows maybe 2 or even all 3 will.

We’ve got to play like our lives depend on it and actually beat Utd ourselves. That will be the professionals choice for keeping your rivals out of future tournaments.

Mak, sorry mate but I just wouldn’t get my hopes up. We won’t beat utd at old tarford. We will be our downfall like we have been all season. We have ducked up every chance we have got. That was poor on Saturday again. Very unconvincing but we had our 5th and 6th choice centre backs play. Still we continue to play far to high and I’ve absolutely no doubt utd will exploit that

People keeping clinging onto this small bit of hope. It’s negative but I gave up long ago as we really have been terrible. It’s really awful at times.

CL qualification isn’t the priority right now. If we miss out it would be because we haven’t done enough this year and I would say that we deserve it. The priority is to string a run of results together so that we go into next season with a good momentum. Some of the past few results were poor but if we do well in the last 4 games, we’ll be unbeaten in 9 games going into next season which will give the players a lift. I really don’t care if we make it or not. This team has rested on its laurels long enough. The important thing is to start going again.

Not giving up on CL until it’s mathematically impossible. When that happens, we should start giving our reserves some game time.

Nah Sean, I’ve no problem with you giving up on it at all. TBH, I was pretty close myself but when the other results went the way they did, true, my hopes have come back to be dashed again, soon.

Razor, I agree that we will absolutely not deserve it if we miss out of it but CL qualification is our only priority right at this moment. There’s nothing left to do before the curtain comes down on this season. Of course though, stringing good results together to bring into next season is a very good correlation though and I agree, this is bloody vital also. In fact, I went on about this recently-ish. I think it was a few GWs ago.

You won’t remember this but when we came back after the covid break and were playing awful, I was going mental about it breaking up our momentum. This may have been on the other site actually but, it was to the point where people were telling me to shut up about it (you are so shocked eh? :D).

So, we are in almost total agreement, the only thing is I desperately want the CL. I don’t agree with anyone who argus that being without the CL would be a good thing. I think the merit of that argument doesn’t stand up, as we’ve got an unholy shock as things are and do not NEED any more “tough love”, so to speak.

It is my opinion that we will reset and rebound next season just as much, if we get the CL and it’s always good to be in that tournament.

If we don’t get it though, we don’t and we’ll have the same job ahead of us. Of course, the manner is how we close out this season is important in keeping this train on the tracks.

I am not expecting CL football. I think we are still more than likely not to get it, perhaps even if Utd beat Leicester.

I’m happy to go game by game though 😉 Any improvement is reason for encouragement.

3rd placed Leicester on 66pts have 2 remaining games left…Chelsea and Spurs
4th placed Chelsea on 64pts have 2 remaining games left…Leicester and Villa
5th placed West Ham on 58pts have 3 remaining games left…Brighton, WBA and Southampton
6th placed us on 57pts have 4 remaining games left…Utd, WBA, Burnley and Palace

Chelsea and/or Leicester will drop points. Neither of them have easy games to finish. Chelsea have a CL final and a Fa cup final against Leicester of all teams still to play too.

Remarkably, particularly after last nights result, were still in the hunt here.
And the mad thing is we may not even have to win all our remaining games.
A draw against UTD and then 3 wins might actually be enough to do this.
Obviously we want a win tonight, but our record there, our current form, their current form suggests otherwise.

Personally, I think Liverpool have to ignore all the other results, and not even talk about them, even when asked.

While that may be hard to do, if we win all our remaining matches that is the only way of giving ourselves a great chance of making the CL, so that is what the team must focus on doing, with hopefully a win tonight to get the ball rolling

The players need to focus on their own games.
    The fans don’t need to.
We can look at and discuss various permutations at will. It’s all part of being a fan.

Go ahead and focus on the permutations, it is your right to do so.

I was referring mainly to the media coverage and interviews where the players and manager will be asked to comment on the Top 4 race.

But for me, I am only focussing on one game at a time, because I know anything can happen in football

We literally can’t get CL football without someone else dropping points.

Had posted this on tonight’s game thread – but just seen that it’s being discussed on this one.
Essentially, CL qualification is in our own hands because Chelsea and Leicester still have to play each other and both can’t get 3 points from it and here is the maths:
Firstly, we have to assume that we win all our games (i.e. ‘in our own hands’) and we get 69 points. Now let’s also assume that Chelsea and Leicester will both be winning their final day fixtures against Villa and Spurs respectively (not a given, but let’s assume in any case); so then it all comes down to what happens in the Chelsea v Leicester fixture. If Leicester win, then it will be Leicester on 72 and Chelsea on 67 (tick!). If it’s a draw, then it will be Leicester on 70 and Chelsea on 68 (tick!). If Chelsea win, then it will be Leicester on 69 and Chelsea on 70 (depends on goal difference between us and Leicester). Currently Leicester are on +3 relative to us, however, with all of the above assumptions, they will win one and lose one, so probably their GD won’t change much. However, if we win our 4 games, then we will have at least a +4 from now. Therefore. whichever way you look at it, if we win our remaining 4 games, then it would be extremely exceptional if we don’t get in the top 4. Spurs and West Ham will not be in the frame with these above scenarios.

It’s not all over if we don’t win.
    We can still go thru.

Anything other than a win tonight would be cutting it really close, especially with the inferior goal difference. If 1 of them could lose twice it would be ideal. I think 2 draws is enough for Leicester to get over the line if we don’t win tonight and Chelsea-Villa could very likely go their way especially since Villa don’t really have anything else to play for. Ideally I would prefer if we went into the final day with our fate in our own hands and I don’t think a draw tonight would help that cause. These players really need to show up there and play hard tonight and achieve something that hasn’t happened in a long time.

“It’s not all over if we don’t win.

For me, nothing less than a win will do for us tonight, otherwise we’ll have our fate completely outside our own hands, hoping for a series of highly unlikely results to go our way – and I totally hate that

Several times over the last few weeks many of us on here, including myself, have said words to the affect of “if we don’t win this that’s us done” and yet here we are.
