Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says he “could not care less” over the choice of referee for Saturday’s Champions League Final against Chelsea as he prepares for a reunion with Antonio Mateu Lahoz.

Mateu Lahoz has history with Guardiola after sending him off during City’s Champions League defeat by Liverpool in 2018.

Leroy Sane thought he had scored during the second leg of the quarter-final tie at Etihad Stadium, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Guardiola remonstrated with Mateu Lahoz and his fellow officials on the pitch at half-time and was forced to watch the second 45 minutes from the stands.

The City boss said after the match, which Liverpool won, that Mateu Lahoz was “a referee who likes to feel different, he’s special”.

The pair are now set for a reunion on Saturday as Mateu Lahoz has been appointed as the referee for the 2021 Champions League Final in Porto.

Asked if he has spoken to him since that Liverpool match, Guardiola replied: “No.”

Then asked if it was something he can’t allow himself to worry about before the game, Guardiola said: “Not one second.

“I could not care less. I am so confident in my team. You cannot imagine how confident I am in my team and what we have to do.”

Spanish official Mateu Lahoz has been refereeing since 2011, but this will be his first Champions League Final.

He was the fourth official during the 2019 final between Tottenham and Liverpool in Madrid, while he has officiated at six matches in the Champions League this season, including the quarter-final first leg between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Mateu Lahoz has also been selected as one of the referees for this summer’s rescheduled European Championship.” Standard 24/05

Lahoz is Spanish Guardiola is Catalonian and they have a history it could work both ways though.

Pep Super confident and why shouldn’t be be but I would be tempted to put up this quote in the dressing room before the game and tell the players to go out and show him.

“Then asked if it was something he can’t allow himself to worry about before the game, Guardiola said: “Not one second.

“I could not care less. I am so confident in my team. You cannot imagine how confident I am in my team and what we have to do.”

Obviously we are not the favorite there even though we beat City twice already. But stranger things happened, we beat Bayern without Terry, Ivanovic, Ramires. This time hopefully Kante and Mendy will be fit for the final. City are the best team in Europe at the moment and I believe for the next 2-3 years, but they aren’t impossible to beat. But of course we have to be at our best, which isn’t the case lately. No idea how Tuchel can turn this bad form around in just only a week, but to be in the UCL final for me is already an achievement. We haven’t been able to even reach quarter final for a very long time. I can’t say I am optimistic but hopefully the team will give their best shot and probably will beat City for the 3rd time.

I’m not sure I am seeing bad form to be honest. I am seeing a lot of opportunities created and just as many wasted by poor finishing. This is not something new of course however we seem to have a better record against sides that don’t pack defences and try and beat us on the counter. City and Liverpool appear to be two of those and therefore sides we seem to have success against. Results this season UNDER TUCHEL against those two prove it as follows:

    Liverpool 0 Chelsea 1
    Chelsea 1 Man City 0
    Man City 1 Chelsea 2

That’s 3 out of 3. Based on that we have a very good chance of winning the Champions League Final for the second time in our history. We must field Kante though. When he is at his best, so are Chelsea. He is a big game player. The bigger the game the more influential he is.

I personally don’t think that our display in FA Cup Final or the one against Villa was great. We weren’t bad but we weren’t good. In UCL Final, we have to be at our best if we want to stand any chance to win it. Good thing is we play better when we are underdogs. We get results against big teams.

2012 is still and probably will still be my best moment as a Chelsea fan but I hope 2021 won’t be far behind if we win again the UCL. Especially it’s been dry for us since winning Europa League with Sarri. No trophy after that until now

I do think we’ve lost a bit of our intensity over the last few weeks understandable given the levels of intensity we hit in certain games, going all out in three competitions and playing so many top teams over a fairly short period of time.

On Saturday we need to get back to the level of intensity we showed in the 4 Madrid games if we do ……..? 🤞🤞🤞

“You never like to see players miss out on a major final, especially when there’s no guarantee that they’ll get a chance to play in another one.

Edouard Mendy has had a brilliant season and his story is incredible when you consider how quickly he’s risen from lower-league French football to being the number one for Chelsea.

Unfortunately, he did pick up a nasty rib injury on the final day of the Premier League season against Aston Villa, but there were reports that he could be back in training today if he continued to recover quickly.

Ultimately it looks like he will be fit to play in the final as he was spotted in training today, while there was further good news with N’Golo Kante also being fit enough to take part.” Caught Offside 26/05

Fingers crossed for both of them🤞🤞🤞

Good news so far for us. And I think Man City have no injured players neither. So both managers will have the luxury to field their best team.

Having a full week off is a privilege neither team has had pretty much all this year. It will be nice for them to spend close to seven days in London and heading over to Portugal focusing on one match ahead. Expecting a riveting Cup Final and our boys playing out of their skins. All the pressure will be on City. Expectations have been high for a decade that a City team win this competition so they will be desperate not to blow it. I love the famous old saying of having to lose one to win one. We found that out in Moscow against United and Liverpool found that out against Real Madrid. It’s great to be a part of it and a victory would be a bonus. If our mid-filed holds their own and Kante plays out of his skin remembering he is a big game player then we have a good chance.

Noted that Liverpool have previously won the trophy 6 times however their last two were a loss followed by a win with pretty much the same squad so that sort of counts 🙂

Watched the penalty shoot-out of Europa final yesterday. I don’t think UCL final will end in shoot-out. But if it’s the case: bring Kepa in on 120th min. I don’t know why, but Kepa always looked confident in shoot-out (despite we lost one against City EFL final under Sarri). But we won one too Europa semifinal.

City are favourite and I hope this favourite tag will feel heavy for them. We need to focus, to play our best football. Our defense must be steel tight. If we can contain their attach (it’s a big ask!), we will steal a goal or two.

If Kante and Mendy are deemed fit enough, my team for tomorrow: Mendy – Christensen,Thiago Silva,Rudiger – Azpilicueta,Kovacic,Kante,Chilwell – Mount,Havertz,Werner.

Reece James didn’t do anything wrong as one of back three, except his pass that was anticipated by Ayoze Perez in the FA Cup fina, but if Christensen if fit: a proper centre back would help us to deal with the quality of City attackers in Foden, Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus or Bernardo Silva. I would start Havertz over Pulisic as I feel that Pulisic did not show anything good recently. Havertz’s skills (and hopefully finishing) could also be decisive for us. Kante is a no-brainer if fit, who else in the world who is the best to try to stop de Bruyne, but a bit torn between Kovacic or Jorginho. Jorginho has better passing but Kovacic has better defense. I opted Kovacic as our midfield needs to be solid against City’s quality in de Bruyne, Gundogan, Rodri.

If until 60th min it’s still 0-0, Pulisic will be introduced as an impact substitute. A fresh pair of speedy legs would help. City are favourite once again, but it’s not impossible for us to win this. Thiago Silva and Tuchel both lost the final last year, probably now it’s their destiny to win it?

I expect the team to look something like this assuming everyone is fit:

    Mendy/ Azpi,Silva,Rudiger/ James, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell/ Mount,Werner/ Harvertz.

Both Kante and Mendy need to be 100% fit imo for us to have a real chance James has to play imho.

Whatever the team I trust in Tommy.🤞🤞🤞

“Raheem Sterling claims Manchester City are the only team that can stop them from winning the #UCL this weekend”

    Bit dismissive of Chelsea.

I suspect Tommy might stick that quote up in the dressing room before the game tomorrow night.😊

Massive massive task for Chelsea tomorrow night everything has to go for us imo.

I’m hoping it’s the year of the underdog: Leicester, Villareal, ???????.😊

Nine, considering City have never even made it to a CL final before, I do think they are being a bit cocky. Would be a shame if it bit them on the arse, wouldn’t it?

Last match of the season, all or nothing. The players have to all want it more than the opponent. Under Tuchel we don’t concede too many goals. We, in my opinion have a better chance of winning this than we had against Bayern in 2012 and that was one of the greatest days in our history. Our players under Tuchel have the steel and desire which might just count for something in the end. Great just to be part of the biggest match of the season. Everyone enjoy :))

    Spot on Lucky above.

We’re in the Wye Valley it might be beautiful but the Wi Fi signal is less than great we’ve got a Smart TV where we are staying hopefully we get to see all of the game on YT. 🤞

We need everything to go for us, I think we’re in with a chance but if it doesn’t work out let’s hope everyone posts sensibly afterwards because nerves will be stretched by then.

Already snapped at the dog this morning nine! Felt so guilty but so nervous. The cute little bugger don’t come near me when chelsea are playing because she can’t handle my tension!

Straight on me after the game though and might need her more than ever tonight 🙂
