Considering the amount of players we have injured, and our weak starting lineup, that is a fair, though not desirable, result,

Time to build on this, as we now have a few more players available, with more competition for places.

Good from a clean sheet perspective but with each passing week fourth place moves further away.

Yup thats 2 clean sheets in a row so thats one positive. I think attack will be much improved once diaz and jota are back. But our midfield needs a major rebuild in the summer.

Had control of the 2nd half and threw it away with a stupid substitution. Elliott should have come off at 1/2 time. Midfield was doing great for 60mins and then we just arrested control of the game for nothing. Waited 20mins to get control back of the game with a triple change when it was too late. Gakpo did a job on Jorginho and I can respect that. If Firmino had played a similar game, we’d be singing his praises. We could have won that game with the right changes in the right positions at the right time. Darwin played hard and looked our biggest threat. Konate MOTM. Covered everything that needed to be covered with his defensive partner a shambles.

Reds, if I was to bet, yes, top four is gone, but we have to keep hanging onto that possibility. City, Arsenal, Newcastle, United all better than us and can’t see us usurping whoever is in the battle for fourth.

“To be fair Songman Chelsea have far more out injured/suspended”

But they’ve also spent a fortune in this transfer window, bringing in 4 players in this window alone.

Regarding Top 4, with more of our players coming back, and increased competition for places, we just have to focus on winning the next league game, and take it from there.

Our next league game is in 2 weeks time, so surely by that time (assuming no more injuries) we will be in much better shape, and even Gakpo will have adjusted more to life at the club.

Good performance and slightly unlucky not to win. Hate to say it because I love him but Salah is hiding and needs to be dropped

Song, indeed. Until Bobby, Diaz and Jota come back in we have to keep picking up points however and then push on aggresively Mar-May as we did a couple of years ago.

If we dont get top 4 i dont think its the end of the world. Probably a blessing in disguise so that we can concentrate on the league like arsenal this season. Arsenal and newc showed that you can still sign good players even without CL football. We did it 5-6 years ago too.

The thing is Rob, we had the points on the board before we went on that slump 2 years ago. Even then, we barely made it after putting together a terrific run. I think at 1 point we would have been out of it if Alisson hadn’t scored at WBA. How far behind are we going to fall before we can make a recovery? We have Brighton (A), Wolves (A), Everton (H), Newcastle (A), Madrid (H), Crystal Palace (A) and ManU (H), Bournemouth (A), Madrid (A) until mid March. Might be another cup game in there as well if we can progress in the FA cup. All those games are high intensity and we’re playing away in most of them. I don’t see cause for optimism especially if we get another key injury. The only upside I can see is that we have some time to train in between games for the next few weeks.

I’m not writing top4 off yet.
Half way point of the season with a few players on the cusp of returning.

I took it you were referring to this game today from what you posted here.
    Chelsea have much more missing.

Agree about Elliot , should have came iff at half time. Couldn’t believe Keita came off at 60 min and Elliot stayed on. We gave the ball away far too much and we lacked any real creative spark.

Looked a bit more solid and a clean sheet but we need some attackers back. Nunes did note in 25 min then Salah and gakpo combined. Mo is not playing well.

I’ll stand by my original statement then.
Chelsea had far more players missing thru injury and suspension today than us.

Seeing how Trent and Thiago seem to have forgotten how to pass the ball and how Fabinho has turned from one of the best DM in the world into a very average one, and Mo has stopped running down the wings, almost overnight in all the three instances, I’m not too optimistic about our chances of top four.

With VVD out we will be a bit more more solid defensively, but I struggle to see how we can have a meaningful season. If everything was in order and all the players were pulling in the same direction like the previous seasons I could have come up with potential reasons for our struggles, for e.g would Mane have made a difference in the league table if he had stayed? but the problem is systemic and there is no simple way to tackle this sorry state, and the return of absentees will not turn us into world beaters again.

Maybe the aim should be a very modest one like getting over 65 points?
