I must admit bar Werner and Alonso I liked the team but I didn’t really expect such a bad effort.Maybe the internationals and all the traveling that goes with it had an effect. We had chances too. Still missing a prolific finisher I think .

BO, for me it’s all about how our shape and players protect our goal in transitions. With a back 3 we can get wingbacks high, have 3 central attackers and allow our midfield 2 freedom to play knowing we have that solid 3 behind.

When we have played a back 4 previously we had sarr left back not alonso and he didn’t get that far forward often and was defence first.

Playing a back 4 with alonso and azpi as full backs with a box to box midfielder pretending to be an anchorman in front of them left us so open to counters it was scary.

To back up what I am saying, check out the average positions of our players in the 433 in win over Newcastle to the average positions in today’s game. Just navigate to match report in the links and select player positions lower down the page under the positional report.

    https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549822/MatchReport/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Chelsea-Newcastle-United

Against Newcastle, sarr played left back with average position a good 10 yards in to our own half. James similar on the right and jorginho is perfectly positioned in the centre of the centre circle about 5 yards inside own half offering better protection and with kante close to him, with effectively a front 4 ahead of them. We were much safer when we lost the ball by far with 4 players and jorginho in position and ready for the counters with kante at close hand too.

    https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549846/MatchReport/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Chelsea-Brentford

Today we had alonso instead of sarr with an average position a good 10 yards in opposition half with zero pace to make up that ground when we lose the ball. Azpi was further forward than James was vs Newcastle and he has less pace to cover the distance too.

Then we have bloody kante as one of our furthest forward players on average!!! That’s a sick joke considering how important he is preventing counter attacks. But his average position is alongside werner!!!

It left us with a back 2 and only Ruben covering, and where as jorginho was perfectly positioned in the centre providing that anchor closely guarded by kante, Ruben was mostly in opposition half with kante nowhere near him.

The positions are averages based on the first half as much as the second and is only the averages of the starters but very telling. It was an awful display. There was a reason tuchel went with a back 3 with this squad…it works better because our squad is better suited to it.

kante is injury prone and is not an anchorman…jorginho is the best we have but is still better with ball than without. We are crying out for rice but I don’t think we can get him…but someone like that we need along with a new full back or 2 if we are ever going to be able to play 433 regularly.

Shocking performance. The defending for Brentford’s second goal was pathetic – we had three players tracking back to defend and all three of them ran to the ball leaving acres of space for Eriksen to run into completely unmarked. That’s how my son’s under 9s team defends!

I really don’t like to dig players out, but Werner was absolutely terrible today. I don’t know how he stayed on the pitch so long. He seems like a nice guy, but he really should be nowhere near our first eleven for the rest of the season.

Didn’t see that coming but after an international break it’s not the first time they have been that poor. On to Real Madrid. Expect a complete turn around in form right across the field.

Agree re Werner. Nothing changes and the commentator summed him up has to be stronger. He is too lightweight for the Premier League. Pity because he’s a trier. Just simply doesn’t fit in . Even playing for Germany mid week he was the same.

The only player today that looked half interested at playing at the level expected in my opinion was Ziyech. He is starting to be the player with the X Factor that tends to do something special when the chips are down. Today would not have mattered, not when you concede 4 goals, especially how poor the defending was.

They were all on International leave still mentally and did not appear ready for a very tough match, almost sleepy. Brentford meanwhile were up for it as would be expected with a derby. Not sure how many Brentford players were away on International duty but guessing far less than Chelsea. That has to be a big plus for the Bees and may have contributed to what unfolded.

Some very good analysis of yesterday’s disaster on here, I wouldn’t know where to start but personally I prefer not to see Werner or Alonso ever play for Chelsea again they were that bad and they been consistent in that regard. Not that they were the only ones Mendy had a shocker and continues to fiddle around with the ball at his feet, thought by now he learnt. I also just don’t see where the goals are going to come from. My main worry is not achieving a top 4 which has now become very difficult. As someone mentioned we all have enough problems right now we certainly don’t need it compounded anymore than it is.

Alonso who to his credit seems now and again able to find the net but is otherwise a terrible all round player, same can be said for Werner, Jorginho and Lukaku amongst the most overated players to wear the blue jersey. Hope the new owners are going to have a good clearout, a club of such high value cannot afford to carry players purely because of their price tags.

Yeah, whatever, sure we’ve read this many times before on the Hekyll and Jekyll news service re everything negative about the club and its players on the odd occasion they have a bad day at the office. I can’t understand why Jorginho is so undervalued. Again all this has been done to death on here.

These are they. 60 years on and still have a chuckle.

Slowly down my cheeks flow the tears, as I desperately try to hold back my fears, my love for you remains blue, even though you have been untrue, we need to start winning so my head can stop spinning, players maybe you all need to change your boots, it looks like you been held back by roots, everyone wants us an investment, I pray that is not the testament.

    Moos,

You are an excellent poster in my books and i enjoy your posts. I also share your concerns, what was a comfortable lead has now turned out to be a nervy lead. And that is what Tuchel’s error of judgement has brought the club. We are looking over our shoulders.

    Morning all

Cant really add to what has already been posted.
The atmosphere was also flat at the bridge!
The only positive thing I can add is that this time last year we lost to WBA.

I’m sure many Chelsea fans felt the exact same way that they feel today. How on earth were we expected to bounce back from such a loss on our home ground? The surprising part is that we did. And we will be able to do it again.

Lets be positive and hope they turn it around on Wednesday.

p.s. Young blue please don’t start any threads lol

The Ricketts are starting to win over the majority of fans now that their position has been made clear, after all you can’t carry grudges on what a previous member said years ago, we all guilty of that at some point in our lives even now, I hope they win especially as Dan Gilbert is now in, the club need a lot of financial assistance to urgently upgrade the stadium not to mention other issues and tbh the other 3 bidders just do not have that kind of finance. If you have the time research each member of each consortium individually and you will see the truth.

Only watched the 1st half and we were not that bad. But while RLC played very well, I think our midfield was weaker defensively compared with Kanté, Kovacic or even Jorginho. He did not do the defensive duty at all RLC and this bothers me a lot. On the channel I watched, the commentator said that RLC was a very talented player, young in term of experience, not age as he is 25, but it’s still to be seen whether he will make it or not as it looks that he doesn’t want it enough. And I relate this with his defending, he did not do it!! He behaved like Maradona or van der Vaart who did not need to defend. He behaved like a primmadonna on the pitch IMO. He is a central midfielder at Chelsea and that position involves defending a lot.

Obviously, back 4 with Alonso clearly does not work as Luckydestiny already mentioned above. We took 4 against Brentford, how many will we take against Real Madrid with Benzema on-fire? It’s a disappointing defeat IMO

Arsenal drop three also and no excuses at all for them re Internationals affecting their performance having played the Monday night match. Our top four position is safe. No nervousness, no looking over our shoulders. No issue. Those that want to create added pressure on themselves do exactly that but don’t share the views of everybody like they try to do. I’d prefer not to join the worry wart club but each to their own I guess.
