Not so sure Ash. I reckon they are at our level. They then have a world class striker which gives them a slight edge in my view. The wide open turf at Wembley may play into our hands…especially if we can dominate possession. Spurs may tire late in the second half if continually having to chase and close down. Trippiers availability will be key for them. Can’t see us smashing them at all. If we do pull through it will be by the odd goal. Can’t see us keeping a clean sheet so our forwards will need to bring their shooting boots. I’ll take a point now…should we get three, it will be a huge bonus.
November 19, 2018 at 8:14 am #1698925My feeling is that both teams can be hit and miss and so it totally depends on who turns up on the day
I think the midfield 3 choice, assuming that Kovacic is deemed fit, will be interesting and provide a decent insight into Sarri’s thinking. Logic says play Kovacic, be tight in the middle and see what happens, however, if he starts with Barkley then it would indicate a desire and willingness to trust in his attacking philosophy and take the game to Spurs
I believe that we can match them in most departments apart from the ability to take our chances so we have to hope that Hazard and co. have their shooting boots on. I would expect that the wide open spaces of Wembley should suit our possession football but we must not get cocky or complacent
Looking forward to the game to use as a barometer to see how far we have progressed so far this season. KTBFFH
November 20, 2018 at 1:51 pm #1699343CFC1905, agreed. The team who turns up that day will win the match. For me, we now seem to be a more complete team than Spurs. But they have players who can score regularly like Kane, Alli, Son, Eriksen etc. While we are kinda too dependent on Hazard. Our strikers simply don’t score enough goals.
We are over achieving at the moment IMO, I hope we’ll keep over achieving, at least for this one more match, as a victory against Spurs away will boost our chance to finish in the top 4. The match against Everton showed that we’re not there yet to compete against the top 2 City and Liverpool. We have had so far 4 draws and 3 of them were at home. Not too good. Looking forward to watch. Hopefully we can score early and win the match.
November 20, 2018 at 10:50 pm #1699432Drop Morata for this game if we want to win it. If he plays the Spurs defence will have a field day. It will be 11 vs 10 game. Play Giroud. Drop Willian play Pedro. The rest of the team are good. Kovecic is needed as he offers a midfield presence. Play Morata up top and i will have £20 bet with you that we will lose that game.
Spurs can be beaten, and their defence isn’t that strong. But their midfield is strong. Whoever wins that midfield battle wins the game.
November 21, 2018 at 12:42 am #1699437Predictable Morata and Willian bashing. Why bother.
November 21, 2018 at 7:47 am #1699452Is this insider betting Wisefan, better watch it 😉
November 21, 2018 at 7:58 am #1699461WF – I can see where you are coming from with regard to Morata. Although he is on his mini run of scoring the fact is that he still goes down to easily and the Spurs defence will know this and will be looking for a few early “stiff” challenges to unsettle him
Giroud is far more robust and capable of staying on his feet and holding the ball up, he has probably a better understanding and link up play with Hazard and of course likes scoring at Wembley. Gives Sarri a bit of a headache so will be interesting to see who he opts for
Cannot agree on dropping Willian as he offers much more (IMO) in terms of work rate and tracking back which I think we will require if we are to win this game. Pedro may be better offensively but for me he is too often more like a headless chicken running into blind alleys
So, some interesting decisions for Sarri including the choice between solid Kovacic or the more adventurous Barkley but whatever team he picks needs to be on their game and start the game at a decent pace and not take 15-20 minutes to get into it (as we have done recently). Spurs currently are more workmanlike than flowing but they do have players capable of changing a game. But so do we so I think it will come down the most efficient team at taking their chances on the day. KTBFFH
November 21, 2018 at 1:32 pm #1699594Oops wrong thread apologies.
November 21, 2018 at 1:36 pm #1699597Bar injuries v Spurs I expect Sarri to go with exactly the same eleven that started v Everton. The big question mark is the likely fitness of Kovacic or not. But we’ll see.
November 21, 2018 at 1:55 pm #1699604If both Kanté and Jorginho play: I think we should have no problem if Barkley starts. Of course Kovacic offers more defensive solidity and we play away, so he is the logical choice.
Morata or Giroud, for me the winner is clear. We cannot have Morata being bullied by Davinson Sanchez or Alderweireld or Vertonghen (if not injured). We need a tough and robust striker who can hold the ball for our wingers. And that’s Giroud. Moreover Giroud links up well with Hazard and he offers more aerial threat.
I don’t follow international matches, so I have no idea about who played and who did not this midweek. Our wing backs Azpi and more importantly Alonso must be extremely vigilant as they have good wing backs and wingers: Son, Davies, Moura, Trippier or Aurier.
Still I hope we will win this match. My team: Kepa – Azpi, Luiz, Rudiger, Alonso – Kanté, Jorginho, Kovacic – Willian, Giroud, Hazard.November 21, 2018 at 2:17 pm #1699614I agree with those suggesting benching both Morata and Wilian for this game, my reason being Wilian is effective when he plays the same position as Hazard, since both played during the midweek, one should be substituted for the other ( 60/30 ), As for Morata, the guy is weak, vulnerable, timid and a whiner, we cannot have someone with all those negative traits to spearhead our attack on a London derby away from home! i will play Giroud as he has more composure, experience, can bully defenders and can bring others into the attack. both Jorginho and Kante played back to back internationals so i dont know how fit they are. if one or both are carrying knocks, we might have to slot Fabregas in.
Kepa, Luiz,Rudiger,Alonso,Azpi,Kante,Jorginho,Barkley, Pedro,Hazard,Giroud.November 21, 2018 at 2:45 pm #1699624I am not sure but I believe that Willian played for Brazil and of course Pedro did not feature so potentially I can see the nod being given to Pedro purely because he should be fresher…?
Unless Jorginho or Kante are injured you are not going to start a game away to Spurs without them, especially when the only viable cover is Fabregas….!! KTBFFH
November 21, 2018 at 2:52 pm #1699628Just checked: Willian did play yesterday, substituted 68 min. Kanté played full for France. Jorginho was allowed to rest against USA, so he did not play midweek.
November 21, 2018 at 2:59 pm #1699631Thanks for the correction Aindro and CFC 1905, Anything more than a point will be a massive bonus for sure.
November 21, 2018 at 3:58 pm #1699642For me it’s really important to win this match. Firstly it’s against Spurs! Secondly they are our direct competitor for the top 4. And it seems to me that they are not as solid as last season. I am just afraid that Hazard’s injury against Man Utd has broken his good form. He hasn’t scored since if I am not mistaken
November 21, 2018 at 5:59 pm #1699655Cfc1905
I don’t see what Willian offers that makes him not droppable. I look at his goal scoring rocord. He has never reached double figures in goals in the league. So he will not contribute goals. And Spurs will know that. As for Morata, he will miss an open goal. Give Giroud a start. Rest assured he will keep the Spurs defence at bay. The rest of the team picks itself.
Between Pedro and Willian Pedro gives you a goal threat. Simple if Morata leads our line, we will be a man down. Similarly a start for Willian puts more pressure on our attack as he will not offer a goal threat. Spurs will put more effort to mark Hazard and we are doomed.November 21, 2018 at 6:50 pm #1699675Who should start up top? Well what are the criteria to justfying that? Is it who can score goals? Is it who can hold the ball and bully the defence? People need to figure out what we need before we call someone to start. What are our needs in the game? When we figure out that is when we can say we should start with who is who.
November 21, 2018 at 8:36 pm #1699697Reports suggest that Kovacic won’t make it and that Barkley will play other than that reports suggest it’s going to be the same team as v Everton?
November 22, 2018 at 5:18 am #1699711this is really the pick of the week, I would say Spurs have a very key man upfront who makes the most difference – if he can be stopped then we can sneak a win, the rest of the areas are I think balanced out with our central midfield of Kante, Jorginho and either Barkley or Kovacic the strongest part of our team.
November 22, 2018 at 6:04 am #1699713I hope we can win this one but with those 3 upfront meaning Morata, Willian or Pedro I have my doubts
