Mikus, “no natural finishers at our club”?
I totally disagree, what about Salah? No player in the PL has scored more goals than him since he started playing for Liverpool, Kane is a distant second. And he’s the record PL goalscorer also.
Having said that, he should have scored that first chance he had, our best chance on the night
April 14, 2021 at 10:24 pm #1943292Songman, for me, like the other front 3, he is more of a winger who is as much responsible for creating chances as he is for scoring them – of which he exceeds expectations for that. And because he exceeds expectations here, it then adds pressure on him. But I think we are sorely lacking an actual specialist finisher to help, which is exacerbated when we have little threat from midfield.
April 14, 2021 at 10:53 pm #1943294When you saw our mid of Milner, Fab and Gini you knew it was ALL on our front line. Only Salah has been scoring so that leaves Salah. Jota came on and added another option but the 433 again allowed RM to execute their ‘containing’ game plan as so many teams have done at Anfield this year. 9 home games in 2021, 1 win and 3 goals.
All Madrid had to do was ensure they kept their shape and denied our front 3. They were never worried about our mid over both legs.
Oh well….
April 14, 2021 at 11:22 pm #1943300I wouldn’t say Salahs a natural finisher at all. Notoriously can take several chances before scoring one.
April 15, 2021 at 3:50 am #1943308That 1st leg was inexcusable. We had 3 weeks to prepare with a number of players remaining behind for the international break. To show up like a deer in headlights is just not acceptable. I don’t know if we underestimated them or were just plain shit but it was pretty apparent to me that we were pulling our challenges in fear of the referee in that game in top of failing to nullify of their threats. The team selection as well was undeniably bad. This one’s all down to Klopp IMO. I think the issues that have plagued us got to him and marred his judgement.
April 15, 2021 at 5:54 am #1943310Not sure why Ox doesnt play since he can score from midfield
April 15, 2021 at 7:15 am #1943313Natural finisher or not, goals matter above all else, and I want the highest scorer in my team, and it’s Salah, 2 Golden Boots in 3 seasons, and a 3rd most likely on the way next month, stunning consistency – the facts don’t lie.
But I agree with Mikus, we need another clinical finisher to add even more goals to our frontline, and that could well be a new signing, or even Jota with time.
Now, time to fully focus on getting that Top 4 spot
April 15, 2021 at 8:10 am #1943324I am completely disappointed by the players wolh let me down. The first lesg was bad especially Keita’s use, another Klopp’s experiment!!
In the 2nd lesg we had the chances but Salah coud not convert them in goal. Jota anh him are the stikres who can score Mane and Bobby can not and probably this is their last season at Anfield.
We have to nothing to be glad except the 4th plave which will be the only thnig that will make us feel a bit better…April 15, 2021 at 9:27 am #1943341Because Ox played 1 good game the whole of last season.
April 15, 2021 at 9:46 am #1943343Salah might not be a “natural finisher”, but he’s a natural at getting into goal scoring opportunities. He’s unmatched in this regard, probably in PL history. So, really it shouldn’t matter as he has some natural ability that leads to him scoring incredibly consistently, to an incredible degree.
When we look to refresh our side, we don’t have to keep any particular player but he’s the best performer of the old thee, by a mile. Whoever comes in has got to be damn good but we’ll have a harder time if we do this without Salah, I think. Of course if he has his mind made up on leaving then maybe we’d be foolish in trying to hold on, as I get the sense that there are several in that team who have long ago made up their minds on leaving.
You don’t just go from being a world beater to being rubbish but if the passion is no longer in the project, it’s time to move on. I definitely think this is the case with Mane, who just looks uninspired and almost resigned. I think it’s time we moved him on but we won’t get much for him after this season. He used to be a 150m minimum player. We’d be lucky to 60m now but hopefully Edwards can work his magic.
AS for ox, ya I mean I don’t remember the last all round good performance from him. nothing against him but he just isnt good enough.
This summer, we’re going to see a lot of outgoings without a huge amount of money coming in, perhaps (hope Im wrong). FSG have got to find a way that works within FFP of injecting A LOT of cash into the team. We’ve got to get 4th place in order to not have our project derailed.
I’d love to know what the limit on spending will be regards FFP because I think with the new investment, we’ll not struggle to have money available.
April 15, 2021 at 10:09 am #1943350Mak I believe we have 300mil in FFP credit before we breach any rules.. That’s not including any departures this summer.
April 15, 2021 at 10:13 am #1943356Net transfer spending since summer 2016:
1. Man C £631m
2. Man U £586
3. EFC £346
4. Villa £339
….
14. LFC £129As above main reason why we crashed out of yet another competition last night and have yielded just 2 trophies during our virtual era of dominance. We are pathetic in knock out competitions and this is one of our most barren eras for such cups. FSG are a joke with teams such as Brighton, Fulham and Leicester all spending more than us since 2016. Their shareholders are screwing the club while no one really sees us as a great team, and teams actually like drawing us in competitions because they know they have a great chance of going through, espcially outside of Europe. Chronic underfunding has undermined the work of Klopp throughout and FSG need to sell up before its too late
April 15, 2021 at 10:15 am #1943358Razor think the 3 weeks break actually was a hindrance more than anything. We didn’t get going as a team also in the CL finals after a similar break. Add to that the diabolical decision by Southgate to axe TAA just before one of the most important matches of the club, looks like Real had everything going for them.
Mak, Mane may have only himself to blame for his current predicament. Salah is selfish but has the stats that makes it look like a quality instead of a fault. However Mane got into a fight for the crown of African player of the year, you just have to notice how he makes passes in the final third, especially to Salah with a complete lack of conviction, as if he is doing it just for the sake of not being accused of not being a team player. That has seeped in his overall play to the point that he cannot dribble anymore. Yesterday he corrected that by making good passes but it’s a little too late I reckon.
April 15, 2021 at 11:06 am #1943381I wouldn’t even be as quick to congratulate him on anything he did yesterday Capt, so believe me, I do know what you’re saying. Mane is a chicken or the egg kinda guy potentially though, as in I’m not 100% sure what’s going on there but I don’t think he’s been invested in the project this season. Salah definitely has the stats to back it up. I think people will come back with his conversation rate perhaps but my counter-argument to that is Salah’s ability being that he gets himself these chances, not that he’s of a Fowler level of natural finishing ability.
Being able to read the offensive play and know where to be is just as useful as being able to score more shots than you miss, it’s just that people will see those misses and think they are seeing a flaw. That same person will never see the opportunities that the natural finisher didn’t find himself in…
So, ya, I’ve little problem with Salah not passing. I think last season he ended up with more assists than anyone except the fullbacks? I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure he got a lot.
Going back to Mane, I’d love to see him back to how he used to be but I just don’t see it happening. he’s had an almost entire poor season now. At some point you’ve got to look at it and say that it isn’t just poor form, something is wrong.
If we really have the ability to spend anywhere near 300m without falling foul of FFP then that’s amazing. That puts almost anyone within reach. *Somewhere in Iceland a set of ears randomly prick up*
April 15, 2021 at 11:08 am #1943382BTW I’ve no problem with the timing of Southgate’s dropping of Trent. In fact, I think the timing was perfect. Trent next game was a big one. There is at least an argument there to say that he got the response that he was looking for. Maybe something’s were said there that Klopp couldn’t touch but wanted to.
April 15, 2021 at 8:19 pm #1943562Liverpool need to stop attacking the opposition team’s bus in an effort to intimidate the teams concerned. Time to ban this club from any competition where their “fans” wreck, smash, demolish… For a minimum 5 years.
April 16, 2021 at 9:23 am #1943678Kirk. Normally I’d be inclined to agree about the sluggish way we resume the season after long breaks but we completely took Arsenal apart a few days before in one of the best counterpressing displays I’ve seen. Granted Arsenal are shit but we certainly looked like we were firing in that game. Also TAA played arguably his best games of the season so far after the England snub so if anything I’d say that should have worked in our favour. They were missing several key players too but we still showed up in that manner.
April 16, 2021 at 9:29 am #1943683I’m quite happy if Southgate drops TAA entirely for this summer.
April 16, 2021 at 9:56 am #1943694I echo the same sentiments for Hendo as well.
May 5, 2021 at 9:50 pm #1950426To think that we were beaten by such a poor Madrid team…
