So Real Madrid it is, not the best but neither ther worse. Both team deep in CL pedigree. If we beat them, then it’ll be Chelsea or Porto.

    Revenge time.

I bet Salah’s fired up already.

And Jota will definitely take his chance to shine

    Decent draw.
    Relatively happy with that.

Biggest plus is avoid ManC, PSG or Bayern till the Finals if we reach that stage

In between the two games we play Villa at home whilst Madrid host Barcelona.

Not a bad draw and we really owe them one

On balance, I think we’d all probably take that. RM have lost most of that aura that they’ve had in recent years and actually look quite ordinary this season (but ignoring the fact that for most of 2021, we’ve looked far worse than ordinary!). Most of their ‘key’ players through the spine of the team now have too many miles on the clock – particularly thinking about Ramos, Modric and Benzema. Shame that we won’t be able to get a packed Anfield for the second leg, but with nothing to win domestically, then we should be able to get ourselves up mentally for this one and quietly confident that we will progress

BTW….. and it’s not worth starting a separate thread for, but yesterday was the best England Squad that’s been picked for many a year with a big fat zero Liverpool players in it. Suits me fine, but still can’t help having a small dig at Southgate and his explanation that Trent was omitted because he’s not on good form (and then he goes and includes Dier!!). On the basis of the old adage that you’re only as good as your last game, Trent has been excellent in the last 2.

Remember we won’t be playing the first leg at the Bernabeu because it’s under renovation so the game will be at the 6,000 capacity Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, home of Real Madrid Castilla, their reserve team who play in the third tier of Spanish football.

Red Herring, while I don’t agree with Southgate’s decision, Trent was poor in the earlier part of the season (compared to his usual standards), but has improved greatly in the last few games, particularly against Wolves, where his defending was excellent.

I bet you he’s mightily pissed off at his omission, and will work really hard in the 3 weeks off to come back with a vengeance and prove Southgate totally wrong, with Liverpool benefitting on the pitch also

It’s my opinion that we couldn’t have gotten a better draw. I’m not saying that Real are the wealkest team in it, as Sean or someone said, they have CL pedigree and that matters.

The reason I think it’s the best draw is simply because of the motivating factor. I believe this side has struggled with motivation ever since covid interrupted the previous season. The lads clearly care about the CL but the element of revenge will fire them all up, especially Salah.

They will be out there in training, all fired up. Klopp haviong so much time to wortk with them, with no match preperation too will be exactly what we need. Lads, I’m over the moon because I think this will have a positive effect on our PL games also. The extra effort they put into training will benefit them here too. The PL is far and away our best chance at playing CL football next season. Well, in my opinion. Maybe I can find the odds and compare them. anyway though, absolutely brilliant. Bring on Real and we’ll batter the fuckers!!! YNWA

Salah, Mane, Trent, Gini, Thiago, Jota and Robbo have all been granted this week off from training.

This will do them and Liverpool a world of good for the rest of our season

Could not be happier about the draw, the only team I wanted to avoid is Bayern and lets not forget that Karius also owes Ramos a elbow to the face… I would not mind Sergio being punched out

I wouldn’t mind if they snapped his legs, Bingo. I wouldn’t want to do it but he purposefully tried to break Salah’s arm, so although I wouldn’t cheer, I also wouldn’t complain.

Glad to hear that some lads got a week off training… and that it wasnt for more than a week because as much as they need to refresh, they’ve got to buckle down hard when they come back. Some of the lads have been red lining for too long now though, I just hope they can get some kind of worthwhile feeling holiday out of staying in the same country. Might sound silly but a week on a beach would be a lot more suitable for most, I’d say. anyway… They’ll be salivating over this draw all the time 😛

Happy with the draw. Bayern and City clear favourites to win though. PSG in with a real shout too.
Real without Cristiano and Bale, and us without Van Dijk and Hendo, youd imagine we should be able to give them a good game. If the players cant step it up for this tie then theres no hope.

Agreed Fulcrum, which is why I was pleased to see Bayern v PSG. One of them will be out. Then the winner of that will likely face City, so we only play any of them if we reach the final ourselves.

I’m pretty confident of our chances against Real though. Confident for a supporter of a team who have lost so many games recently… but you catch my drift from what I said above, I hope.

I don’t think there is much negative pressure about this fixture, as we went on to win the CL after that awful night.

There were no easy games here. Chelsea may have gotten the easiest but Porto did beat Juve over 2 legs and although they themselves aren’t what they were, are still Juve. That said, I think we’ve gotten the best draw possible, including the potential semis. It’s setup for us to find our way into the final, if we could only get back to playing as we did last season. Of course with the players out that we have, that isn’t entirely possible but we sure as shit can get a lot closer than we have been. We’re improving of late though and now they have quality rest for some, hard training and learning for others. It can be done.

They’re all back in the gym today, so the week off refers to football training. Also there’s an 11 v 11 internal match going on today afternoon at Kirkby
