Absolutely lads, buying a player isn’t as simple as going to the shop & paying for them. That said, we’ve known of our deficiencies for a long time so surely we could’ve had alternative options to our main players. I still think we will make a couple of late buys but if we don’t I’d expect a similar season to the last one, where we get a couple of injuries & our lack of quality in depth gets exposed. We done better than I expected last season but we may have C/L as well so we need more depth. Can’t wait for it to start.

Ginger: The reality is that Barca are miles ahead of us in terms of depth and quality. Yes, they may be having problems getting a coulple of players but I can assure that if they fail with Coutinho/Hazard etc they will get someone else of a really good standard.

In addition to that, Barca in particular are renowned for bringing quality in through the academy and practically every year there’s one or two other stars that manage to break through. We’re the exact opposite- there’s practically nothing coming through our academy that makes it and stays with us.

As I stated before, I think we’ve a decent first team squad but as the season runs on, we’ll be found out. We just don’t have the number, something which Barca definitely do have.

If Barca don’t get Hazard/Coutinho/Dembele I’m not convinced they’ll get someone of the same quality.
Those types of players don’t just grow on trees but if they do manage it I guarantee they’ll pay thru the nose for the privilege.
That doesn’t mean it’s gonna be easy for them and they’ve been at it for a coupla weeks now. If we sold Coutinho now we’d only have a coupla weeks to get any new business done which is crazy considering we’d want at least 1 top quality player in to replace him.

The window hasn’t closed just yet and I’m confident more players will arrive.

Ginger: I didn’t say that they’d get someone of the same quality, I said of a good standard. I do agree though, they probably won’t get someone of the same quality but that the whole point in the arguement… they will deliver players.

The main risk factor with not getting it right this year is that for once, we have an opportunity to build on a season of relevant success. At the end of this year, if we go backwards or even just stay the same, you’ll have several more players trying to leave the club and we’ll be trying to fill voids continuously. As it stands, if we don’t lose Can and Coutinho, they’ll most likely be gone by next season.

We have a terrible recent history of buying players in the January window i.e. we just don’t do it any longer. This appears to be a policy. Therefore, if we don’t manage to bring in considerable reinforcements by the start of the year, we won’t have a big enough squad to compete this season. It’s as simple as that.

If we don’t land players it will be down to poor judgement and lack of planning. Football is like any other business. It’s reliant on it’s staff and process/procedures etc to deliver. Purchasing players is one of those processes that a club needs to plan for.

I really hope they turn it around but the reality is that the club has failed miserably as it stands so far. This is the summer where we need to kick on to ensure that by next season we’re a club that players want to go to and where players want to stay.

Definitive official statement from the club.
    Coutinho going nowhere.

Now let’s get VVD and a midfielder (Naby?) wrapped up.

People might disagree but couthino can go now. He doesn’t want to play for us. I was the same with Suarez but look how that turned out. I can’t stand a player who doesn’t want to play for us.

If he stays I’ll support him but fuck him

As much as couthino has improved, he’s not near the standard Torres or Saurez were when they left.

I’d like him to stay but it wouldn’t bother me as much as when Torres or alonso went. Saurez was always going

Sky are reporting that Coutinho has handed in a official transfer request? Which Liverpool have now denied he has?

Sean,I suspect transfer request or not Coutinho probably wants to go to Barca but the club are in control given the length of his contract. Be surprised if he goes this summer but I would be surprised if he was at Liverpool in 2018/19.

There doesn’t seem to be much of a source for this transfer request yet several reliable sources are saying it’s nonsense.

Think I’ll stick with the reliable sources.

Sean, Sky quoting a Coutinho family member now who is quoting Gerrard and Suarez saying it’s impossible to leave Liverpool amicably.

If all this is true it seems to be taking a more difficult turn now but Liverpool remain in control based on the length of the contract but once a player starts to force the issue it’s generally the beginning of the end.

Big problem for Liverpool because in order to entice players like Van Dijk they need to hold on to their best players and even if Barca paid £150m for him where do Liverpool find a quality replacement with less than 3 weeks to go.

    I blame PSG. 🙂 Cheers 999

So what’s the issue can somebody clear it up for me? BBC (who I trust for accuracy) are saying Coutinho is not for sale and that transfer request allegations are false. Guardian newspaper however (who i also trust) are saying Coutinho handed in transfer request after Liverpool’s public statement. Regardless I don’t think Coutinho will be leaving and if anything it’ll mean that we get the best of Coutinho this season. Now he has finally achieved one of his dreams by being courted by Barca, he has to spend this season proving why he is good enough to be wanted by them with consistent performances.

Ginger, according to Sky Liverpool have said that the club deny recieving a transfer request. Wriggle room? And the statement from the supposed family member? If true is pretty explosive.

If there is any truth in any of this it suggests the player is rattling his cage a la VVD to try and get away?

Time will tell mate but my guess is no matter how all this shakes out if Liverpool get another season out of Coutinho that will probably be his last but we’ll see.

I don’t buy the Coutinho injury angle at all. Hope i’m wrong but I’d say he is gone.

What a coincidence that VVD will miss the Saints opener with a ‘virus’ as well.
