Seriously Bingo you could create an argument with yourself in a phone box. Very undignified in this instance even for you.

Please provide the specific Eulogy that states Maradona wiped the floor with Messi. In what way did the definition you provided discredit anything I’ve said. Your stupidity knows no bounds.

Bingo – “Maradona would wipe the floor with Messi and I daresay that football was a lot tougher when Diego was playing…” is the specific sentence I have labelled you a prat for saying. Are you saying your eulogy is something I shouldn’t discredit, even though it contains a ridiculously stupid statement.

I admit I did get a little lost, even I didn’t think you were arrogant enough to be taking the stance you have taken.

Mate I don’t wanna be arguing over a eulogy, if you think Messi is half the player Maradona was then fair play to you but in a forum where posters are giving eulogies about Diego, I dont see the sense in arguing against any poster that gives Maradona some credit…

He is the greatest player ive seen play, there is no one that comes close to his talent

One story about the man, I remember when a Napoli fan got cancer or something, the fan wrote the club as he could not afford his medical bills… The club declined but Maradona himself organised a game for the fan, just invited his fellow professionals for game of footy and gave the proceedings to the fan…

The one thing I remember about Maradona was his love for the game, i cant remember a time where he sulked, even with all his troubles he always smiled on the pitch. There is not a player that has inspired as many…

Fair play and I’m sorry for calling you out like that, I could have chosen my words better…

He was certainly a man of the people, and without a doubt one of the best to ever lace up. I apologise for my part in the hostilities.

Bingo, that game you just mentioned. Was it the game on a really muddy pitch? If yes, Napoli wouldn’t insure him for the game. So he just paid his own insurance.

Sad to see him gone too soon. RIP.
As to comparison with Messi, who was better?, It is very subjective. In my opinion Maradona’s natural skill was even better than Messi (it’s close and opinions will vary). Messi is taller than him but Maradona was much stronger and tougher.
Messi is amazing and has much better club stats and won a lot more due to his longevity and aided by playing is some of the best club teams in history.
Maradona’s successes are fewer and over a shorter time but reflect much better on himbas an individual player.
What he did in almost single handedly wining a world cup is unparalleled in the world cup. In 1990 he nearly repeated the feat, rarely talked about, his run against Brazil to set up the winning goal late on in crucial game on way to the final was great.
At club level he almost single handedly dragged a club used to battling relegation to 2 Seira A titles and a UEFA cup (back then UEFA cup was much stronger competition, only champions qualified for the European cup). This was when all the world’s top players played in Italy (AC Milan had one of the all time best club teams, Gullit/ Van Bastien/ Rijkaard/ Baresi/ Maldini and Juve and Inter (Inter had the best 3 players from Germany’s world cup winning team) also very strong).
Maradona also managed to display his amazing dribbling and skill during an era of tough tackling, bad pitches and heavier footballs. He also excelled playing in Italy where defenses are very strong.
It’s hard to imagine Messi being able to be nearly as effective if he played at that time. You could see Diego being even more dangerous in today’s game.
In terms of leadership Maradona comes out way on top. Maradona did it in the big moments (think of 1986/1990 world cups), You just know if Maradona near his peak was playing on Barcelona teams in recent years these Champions League collapses would not have happened.
So for me deciding is Maradona or Messi better is deciding which is better, Messi brilliance over a long time or Maradona who was even better/ more valuable when at his peak over a shorter period of time. I would pick Maradona.

RedSteve, why are you and others comparing him to Messi when the benchmark is Dan James?

Maradona was truly loved by the people of Argentina as the scenes in Buenos Aires yesterday confirmed whatever his flaws may have been he was a magnificent footballer one of the very best the world has ever seen, some would argue even the very best the world has seen that’s what he’ll be remembered for and rightly so.

Yes he was a flawed diamond but it’s very hard to live with the kind of adulation and pressures he lived with without some flaws.

    Rest in Peace Diego.
