i’m sure none of us are getting carried away with the result yesterday,
but it was interesting seeing emery try players in different positions.
aub was simply outstanding and if given the choice i would rather him
be the out & out striker than playing on the left hand side.we know he’s
a top,top player who will score 20+ for us this season.in the second half he pushed rambo further up the pitch and i’ve got this
gut feeling that he might play rambo in that position and play xhaka &
torriera in the midfield and will play ozil on the left?that’s
certainly an option he can do if required in some games.interesting
listening to chambers saying that emery is looking at playing it quicker
to break defensive lines that we will face this season.another important point is i think the players look better and leaner,
and fitness,i think, has been an issue these past few seasons.i also
like the fact that he’s asking the defenders to be defenders first and
not look to be attacking full backs all of the time.very early days but
i really like the look of our new signing matteo.i think he will push
torreira all the way and i think they could play pretty well together.we have a tough start to the season but if we can get a win against citeh,
it could be the springboard for us to have a very good season.emery has
given every gooner belief that things are going in the right direction and
i really hope he can get another player or two in.can’t wait for the season
to start now.really looking forward for the first time in years.July 15, 2018 at 11:30 am #1656193It’s to early to say but we looked outstanding going forward but still a few signs of poor defending that would have been punished by a better team.
July 15, 2018 at 12:37 pm #1656213stev2bath1.there is no doubt we need a lot of work on our defending.
be interesting to see who becomes the first choice centre backs but
the one thing we must do this season is make a huge dent in those 51
goals we conceded last year.that’s way too many.in these next couple
of pre-season games we will be tested defensively and that’s what we
all want.i wouldn’t actually mind another centre back but i can’t see
emery getting anymore defenders in.kos,mustafi,sokratis,holding,
chambers,mavropanos.6 centre backs.who are the best two??July 15, 2018 at 1:20 pm #1656220Agree 100% and I don’t know who I would choose not one of them is a dead cert.
July 15, 2018 at 2:54 pm #1656245I wouldn’t be surprised to see Holding or Mavropanos go out on loan. Kos is out for most the season that leaves Mustafi and Sokratis to start with Chambers and holding/mavro playing in the europa. Whether that’s good enough remains to be seen but I think Emery will do a lot of work on the defensive tactics and I am looking forward to see. Interesting that Chambers played in midfield yesterday so we might see him play there.
July 16, 2018 at 4:05 pm #1656555I think you are right in respect of the centre mid pairing….my guess is
4-2-3-1 but the 3 behind Auba will not be stuck to centre/right/left…much like he tried at Valencia and Sevilla as well as PSG (although thats more of a front 3)….
Czech/Leno
Bellerin/Lich Mustafi/Sokratis Monreal/KolasinacTorreira/Xhaka
Miki/Ramsey/Ozil…moving around the final third
Auba
fullbacks I would guess depends on opposition but get impression this is likely…some of the young lads might break the team though….
width per fullbacks I suspect so no need for an out an out winger…at least from the Boreham Wood game and what I see from training clips..whether Ozil fits in is the debate for me….maybe Iwobi will be better fit or Gomes if reports are to be believed…And for those of you ready to jump up and down and be negative and point out flaws…I already see flaws and benefits of this system its just an observation open to interpretation and may be well wide of the actual mark…I am not saying we do not need other players or anything like we need Zaha or similar…I am merely speculating on highlights of a game in which players did not play…much like journos do all the time
hemay even pull Ramsey further back much like Croatia did with Modric and Rakatic and play Ozil/Miki in behind striker…but if we do get an out and out winger then obviously this would change
July 17, 2018 at 8:31 pm #1656946Refreshing to see that signings are being made in good time, without the billion and one excuses for not bringing players in that we used to get from the stubborn old goat.
July 18, 2018 at 10:31 am #1657063I love looking at some of the pictures coming out from the training ground. You can see him really having a go at some of the players. I’m not sure I ever saw that from Wenger. For the first time in a long time, I’m really looking forward to the new season because I know that even if we make mistakes, it’s very likely they’re not going to be the same mistakes that we’ve been seeing for the last decade.
Whilst I can’t see any team catching up with City, I definitely think a top four spot could be on the cards, if for no other reason than that all the main positions that we needed players for have been filled.
I don’t want to get carried away, as we’ve all been let down in the past, but I definitely want to ride to wave of optimism whilst it lasts. I think a good first season for Emery would be finishing top four and winning the Europa Cup.
July 21, 2018 at 11:43 am #1658011With the way Pool are strenghtening i just dont see how we are to catch up.
We still have not resolved Ramsey so we are sure to have another saga this season.
Then there are rumours of a £6m deal to sell Ospina. Not sure its true but if it is then it just shows that the same shit is happening again.
Then we have the BYD deal which Gazidis made with someone not even employed with that company. Sorry but this just shows that we have clowns in control of the deals.
Nothing falls on Emery so i wont blame him in any way but it highlights that we are not changing in all areas as expected.
July 22, 2018 at 8:34 am #1658117I don’t get that muffler. Did you expect us to start challenging straight away? Liverpool are currently a contender with city, then its Utd with us spurs and Chelsea fighting for 4th place.
It’s not the same at all. If anything last 3 months have been anything but the same. We’ve hired new manager for first time in 22 years, we’ve got our business done early and we’ve not sold any of our best players. Getting rid of Ospina is only a good thing, he is not good enough. Ramsey going also wouldn’t be the end of the world. in 10 years he’s performed and been fit for about 2 seasons in total! He is very replaceable.
We need to sell a few more and by looks of it that’s gonna happen very soon.
I’m struggling to see how anyone can bitch at the moment.
We’ve had huge changes at club recently it’s now about taking small steps to put us back. We got 2 chances of cl entry which is where the club and the players we want need us to be. Let’s get that little hurdle passed before we start trying to win the league and get in the calibre of players we want/needJuly 22, 2018 at 10:52 am #1658151I did not say everything was the same.
Selling Ospina for peanuts is the same type of business we have done before. Im all for selling him but for £6m come on even you must realise thats a lowball offer.
If we are to sell Ramsey then it has to be now as its only 16 days left of the window. If we are to replace him that is. Again a player running down his contract no change there.
The question was are we competing for 4th my view is that we are not. Which we at least should be regardless of all changes. Title come on I said nothing of the sort. Pool, City and Utd are way ahead of us and Chelsea are not done in this window so Im just not seeing what you see.
Dont get me wrong Im happy about the changes done. But selling for peanuts and letting good players run their contract down is a big issue because without money we just cant compete. This scenario is the same even if you dont think so
July 22, 2018 at 11:46 am #1658179Muff it’s also the wages we will get off our books if we sell him it’s not just the fee. Also getting another 10 mill and not spending it on players means nothing to the team. Ramsey holds all the cards at the moment they have offered another deal but he has not signed and I don’t think it’s just about the money my guess is he fancies another challenge. So I think he will see out his contract or we let him go but not sure where he would go to? Would any of the top five take him? Maybe somewhere in Europe. I hope I am wrong but not feeling positive about him staying.
July 22, 2018 at 6:38 pm #1658311You honestly think Ospina is worth more than 6 million!!! He is fucking useless. I’ve seen better keepers in the conference leagues.
Anyway weve been out of cl posiations so the first step is getting back to that. Whether that be 4th or Europa Doesn’t matter.
Ramsey is not the be all and end all of the club. I wouldn’t be bothered if we sold him. He isn’t a key figure, emery might like him to be but he never has been before. I like him a lot, I do get fed up of his shit flicks and useless passing but he does offer that drive and his timing into box is very good. That said and I’m repeating myself now in the last ten years he has had 2 good seasons, not even stella seasons just good ones the other 8 he’s been average, poor or injured. If he doesn’t sign by end of month I’d ship him out, but I think he’ll find himself worse off. No other top 5 team would have him starting not one! After that he’s left with teams that are poorer than us. Can’t see him going abroad either unless it’s Real Madrid to join bale but they don’t want him.
If Ramsey runs it down then so what? Seriously what does it matter he is not integral.July 23, 2018 at 6:37 am #1658362other than getting more money for the dross and REINVESTING the cash in the team, i think we are doing well, very quiet on the Ramsey front, like some others i think he is very replacable but again would prefer to see him leave for a decent fee, that said clubs are hardly knocking down doors to sign him so maybe that should tell him something, thinkhe thinks he is better than he is…going to take time to change the mentality that AW instilled in players, telling them they are good when not or injured and robbing a living off the club….
July 23, 2018 at 5:09 pm #1658588He might be useless according to you but he is still a Colombian international with experience. So just because you think that we should accept that value when Ward was sold to Leicester from Pool for £10m and what skills do he have besides being English?? Every single keeper sold this summer has been sold for more and Ospina is the worst of all them get real mate. Accepting low ball offers are what we are known for regardless of what player it is this has to change so that we can reinvest. You dont need a degree in economics to understand that. Its same with letting players run their contracts down we wont get any money for them to use to buy new players. If you dont get that then you can hardly complain when all we buy is dross like Sanogo.
July 24, 2018 at 3:46 pm #1658893Andy – It’s not about challenging for the title, anyone would be naive to expect it in the first season itself, although we have seen far more crazier things happen in Football. However, what as a fan i always look for is progress.I think it’s about time we came back into the CL,that’ll be a sign of progress.Finishing in the top four and winning the europle league should very much be our focus and we’re quite capable of it.Saying that,I still think there are some naive gaps in our squad and if this is the final squad it’s laughable(comparing to other squads). We need another defender, midfielder and definitely atleast one if not two winger. If that means letting some unimportant players go then I’m all for it but we need more quality.
Also steve,i’M Surprised you think getting rid of Ramsey is the correct solution because we’d get rid of his wages too…Is that a joke? He’s proven to be our most important player over the past couple of season, moreso even than the overpaid Ozil.Getting Ramsey to sign that contract extension should be priority, infact we should not even be wasting our time to think “will he,won’t he”.Just get it done, make him captain if you have to.As for Ospina, while I agree that he’s a pathetic personality/character who 90% spends his time on the pitch performing thatrics and seeking attention,as a goalkeeper he’s actually quite good.Saying that I’m all for selling him as well but 6m in today’s market for a columbian international is laughable.Just have a look at other rates and how much money others are going for.It dosen’t ignore the fact we’ve done some horrible business in the past mainly selling players because we’ve never really given correct valuations to both our target and outgoings. But I’d attribute that to le proffesseur.
