I must say that Alan Pardew has got many fans making the right noises about him. He is fortunate to replace the Clown as playing football the right way and the way almost all top flight teams play means we are far closer to Man City than to Pulis’s Albio, so thank God for that. Also we shouldn’t forget that the four points we have achieved since the circus left town are against Spurs and Liverpool away, Everton and Arsenal at home. And with luck we could have achieved a draw against Man U. This means we have played five of last year’s top seven and have matched them stride for stride. And yes we got lucky against Arsenal but you don’t need to have an elephantine memory to remember that we had a cast iron penalty refused at the Emirates and that Arsenal had a very dubious last minute penalty given against Burnley. Wenger’s selective memory and vision was never more apparent. AP to his immense credit said it was a lucky decision in our favour. So let’s see what happens in the transfer window and whether the young players brought back from loans offer anything. I for one am cautiously optimistic.

Sarky …. A very reasoned post which I totally agree with. I saw more attacking intent and good play during the draw with Everton than in all the matches under Pulis this season. As to transfers, if we sell Evans and put all the money into a striker I will be happy, only problem is every team in the bottom 14 are looking for strikers and we aint that attractive at the moment. Ings on loan with a buy clause if we stay up would be a good option IMHO. Anyway, hope we can scrape that win tonight against the Hammers. COYB.

My sentiments too. Posters on Boing say pretty much the same. We need a creative midfielder and someone who knows where the goal is and how to put the ball in it. We have been looking at Cedric Bakambu of Villareal who has scored 14 in 21 including 3 in the Europa League. The fee mentioned id £20 million but if he scores like that for us it would be worth it. I remember Lukaku going to Everton for £22 million and look what he did!

Meanwhile, back in the real world …… Krychowiak came recommended, but playing for Pulis clearly knocked him for 6 & considering our current position he probably won’t be given a chance to settle in the Premiership under Pardew. I doubt we’ll be able to bring in a better striker than Rondon or Rodriguez in the January window, so let’s hope we can bring in a creative goalscoring midfielder. It says something that Brunt & Morrison are probably still our most effective players in that position & have been greatly missed while injured, as has Phillips. I hope Evans stays, but I doubt he will. Big game tonight.

Just returned from the warmth of Cambodia visiting the remotest part of the family over the festive season where happily I was able to watch a full EPL programme courtesy of a local channel which screened every match in its entirety. Good to see the attacking intent which Pardew has stimulated but I can only imagine that the optimism displayed on this page is the result of some excessive intake over New Year.
Reflect for a moment. We have not won in 20 outings this season and have lost or drawn against all the teams around us save for Bournemouth on the opening day. Our last 38 league matches have yielded just 5 wins and 29 points. We have just 17 games left and need probably another 24 points. Five of these are against the top 5 from which we might reasonably expect zilch which leaves us needing perhaps as many as 8 wins from the other 12 games. Anyone seriously think this is going to happen?
Nothing Pardew can do in the coming month will much alter the fact that we have a modestly talented squad and for this there is but one culprit. For myself I am utterly convinced that we are now going down and for that reason alone I would keep most of the Championship quality players we have as we shall need them next season when AP will hopefully begin the massive job of progressively creating a new team capable of playing his way.
History shows very clearly that teams which cannot score goals get relegated and although we have some forwards we have no strikers worthy of the name and our creative play rests entirely with crosses from wide positions which no one converts. I would love to be proved wrong and I will be there willing the boys along for the rest of the season but with no expectation of any great success. Defensively we have been very good in most matches but the rock on which it is built is Hegazi not Evans and if he has to be replaced we still have GMac available to see the season out. No problem.

PS What the hell has happened to Sam Field. Should be an early name on most teamsheets in my view but I don’t even see him on the bench. Injured or simply overlooked?
