3 points was all that mattered. Probably Mount’s worst game everAugust 6, 2022 at 8:38 pm #2120606
James too Hyllested mate, but yep 3 points and a step closer to being fully match sharp.August 6, 2022 at 8:41 pm #2120607
I liked what I saw of CucurellaAugust 7, 2022 at 12:14 am #2120631
Not the best performance but not the worst. Sterling is my MoM, he creates chances, is quick, can dribble. Silva & Azpi solid. Koulibaly looked surprised with the speed & physical aspect of Premier League. Kanté still our best midfielder. 3 points is really important but Spurs will beat us next week if we don’t improve. Looking at the age of our back 3, I think it’s mandatory that we get FofanaAugust 7, 2022 at 6:22 am #2120641
Weaknesses all over the field, back 3 couldn’t get back in time when we were countered, even though they played well otherwise, midfield likewise and has no energy or thrust with Jorginho there. I would definitely start Kovacic or Gallagher before him, poor Kante has to do all the work. Sterling can take the penalties. Upfront Harvetz and Mount were terrible, Mount should never be selected against Everton, his not going to try very hard against Dad. Chillwill also should not have started after being out for so long, he was a big liability yesterday. One good positive besides the 3 points we had a very strong bench half of which should be starting.August 7, 2022 at 7:14 am #2120643
Not going to elaborate much as I think everyone has hit all the points home but the fact that we needed a penalty to beat a very weak Everton team is a worry. Tuchel has a record of rotation and I hope he continues to do that till we get it right. The only thing that’s changed about Jorginho is his penalty run-up which feels much better but his general play is still a problem for the rest of the team. Silva I thought was outstanding again. However 3 oldish centre halves are probably going to battle to get back quickly it was evident yesterday at times. Lots of work for Tuchel to do. Mendy made 2 crucial saves, winning the first game does help a lot as it’s clearly going to get much tougher especially our next game.August 7, 2022 at 9:54 am #2120658
Glad we have a full week before the next game, we are obviously undercooked and it will be a few weeks before we are looking sharp however I would expect to see an uplift in intensity and quality against spurs…we all know that is vital if we are to get a result and yesterday’s game would have helped us too.August 7, 2022 at 10:50 am #2120666
We still have problems upfront, according to the stats we had 17 chances of which only 5 were on target. Also quite a few attempts at crosses were blocked, so our main problem is in the final third, I wonder if they going to go for another striker?. The squad is full already, some players intend to leave though. Difficult for Tuchel.August 8, 2022 at 12:46 am #2120915
Early season form and a major change in central defence so can’t be too critical and the important thing is the three points which are rare out of Goodison Park. There needs to be a substantial improvement right across the park though if we are to get a win against Tottenham. Kante looked to be our best and full of energy and nearing peak fitness which is a great sign. The one bright light probably apart from Sterling in an otherwise dullish performance.
One thing appears for sure and I feel for Frank. Everton don’t appear to have strengthened at all since last season so its going to be a long hard struggle for Everton to stay in the top flight based on their performance. They were pretty listless and for the first match of their season at home I was expecting more. They have very little threat on that performance and will be struggling to get draws let alone wins.August 8, 2022 at 12:23 pm #2121029
Take the 3 points all day long. An away win first game of the season and with Goodison turning in to a real bogey stadium for us, happy days.
Encouraging signs, but also glaringly obvious we need a striker or at the very least an attacking forward with a strikers instinct who knows how to move off the ball to create opportunities.
Oh and most importantly, something else that has carried over from last season…FFS Tommy work on those bloody corners and set pieces!!August 8, 2022 at 12:29 pm #2121032
Lol Niblue you are right! James must have taken 15 corners and nothing came from any of them other than another corner!August 8, 2022 at 1:45 pm #2121056
The new strikers like Darwin & Haaland scored. They looked extremely dangerous. Did we miss something by not buying a striker? Or did Lukaku traumatize us too much?
About corners, except Havertz, we did not have players of 1.9m height on the pitch (Rudiger & Lukaku before, Chalobah was on the bench, Alonso 1.89m asked not to be included). So I think it’s totally normal that our corners resulted in nothing when besides our back three: it’s small players like Sterling & Jorginho who helped wresting in the opposition penalty box during corners. Hence I think it’s mandatory that we get Fofana. We need a CB, he is 1.9m tall, has a Premier League experience. The gamble would be he just came back from a big injury.
chelsea1967, looking at their display yesterday, so spirited, Anthony Gordon excellent, our goal was a mistake of lack of concentration: Everton should stay up. Frank Lampard has done a good job there. What’s missing is a striker as Richarlison isn’t replaced & Calvert-Lewin injury prone lately.August 9, 2022 at 1:16 pm #2121373
The lack of height is a concern. I remember Jose saying in an interview in his first season at the club that he preferred to have at least 6 outfield players 6 foot or above.
You would struggle to get that in the squad.
We have seven, one of those is Alonso and others include Gallagher, Broja, Loftus Cheek, Chukwuemeka, Chabolah none of whom are guaranteed starters!August 9, 2022 at 6:46 pm #2121457
Aubamayang, de Jong and Fofana, the rumours about these 3 just won’t go away.
Regards Auba, I don’t really want him, if it happens I will just hope for the best and take comfort in knowing we have a couple of goals against arsenal guaranteed this season at least 🤣
De Jong, well imo he would be an upgrade on jorginho technically and athletically, but jorginho’s experience is such that I don’t see this as necessary right now. However if juve or napoli offer 25m for jorginho then someone like de Jong would be an amazing replacement.
Fofana, well I can’t believe we are entertaining going higher than the 70m already rejected considering the money spent already, we will be at 250m total if we agree a fee of around 80m. Its actually mental…money aside I think he has everything you want in a prem defender, but it’s a hell of a gamble.August 9, 2022 at 6:54 pm #2121463
RB Leipzig have re-signed striker Timo Werner from Chelsea for £25.3m (€30m) plus bonuses on a four-year deal.
That’s pretty much half the fee we paid back plus his wages off the books.
Wasn’t great value for the money we can’t claw back though but he did play his part in a champs league win and that was priceless!
Good luck to Timo, always gave his all and ultimately that’s all anyone can demand of a player.August 9, 2022 at 8:49 pm #2121489
