Posted by Hightown hope(Liverpool), on the general your say thread, in regards to the patience due unto Klopp:

“You’re right guys – he deserves 2 years before he’s judged, but will he get it? The ‘must have now’ society demands instant results, and constant success. Rodgers was Manager of the Year less than 18 months ago, and has been sacked (rightly!), Mourinho, most people would accept is one of the best managers currently around in world football, but by all accounts, the sands of time are running out for him. It’s a tough old world for managers, and I do believe it is affected by our British press. If they decide a manager is going to cop it (no pun intended!), then their campaign builds momentum, further fuel being added by idiots on the radio like Adrian Durham and Jason Cundy…thhen the sheep on social media join in and suddenly the guy is toast, and I think to an extent, this is what has happened to Rodgers.

He is not a bad manager at all, but his personality led to him being a soft target for the media. Suddenly he was David Brent, suddenly all his signings were failures, suddenly he was muddled in his tactics, suddenly he talked too much to the Press and said the wrong things.

So let’s look at those issues individually and forensically. The David Brent tag probably started after the embarrassing Liverpool documentary that was filmed just after he started at the club. That documentary was the idea of FSG, not Rodgers, and while the names in the envelope scene returned to haunt him, it is a recognised method of motivating one’s staff, unfortunately it appeared on national TV in front of an audience that was very happy to take the piss!
His signings were failures – taking away the possibility that some of these signings weren’t actually is, we can say that Balotelli, Lovren, Borini and arguably Allen and Markovic are bad signings. The jury is out on many others, but I don’t think in all honesty we can call Moreno, Sakho, Firmino or Lallana failures yet. They may turn out to be, but not yet. Mignolet is a decent keeper, far from the best, but far from the worst (see his save from Naismith in the Derby). Even Allen has played too many games for Liverpool to be called a total failure – squad player only, but every squad needs those.
Muddled in his tactics? Not really. Everyone praised him for his flexibility 18 months ago – now it’s a stick to beat him with. When we went 3 at the back, it was revolutionary, now it’s just muddled apparently.
Talks too much to the press – well, I can’t recall him ever ducking a post match interview whatever the result, and that is more than can be said for many managers, including the ‘legendary’ Fergie. His mistake was always answering the questions from the heart and saying things that in the cold light of day should have remained unsaid whatever he thought, like the Spurs comment after they spent the Bale money
I’ve gone somewhat off track myself here, as this post started by saying that Klopp won’t be given much time by the press,, and has ended with a defence of Rodgers, and it’s not particularly meant to be that. I guess I’m trying to illustrate, badly I know, how the press can make a managers position untenable by dictating fans and even players opinions.

Right I’m boring myself now – sorry about that!”

I have been delighted with the quality of the posts on offer from everyone on here since the relaunch, and in my humble opinion this was the best post I have read and I thought it deserved to be read by more football fans. For its length alone it could not have been posted on the old forum and for me it epitomises the benefits of the new forum in general.

@thirtykane, well played with the general your say thread, seems a lot of people are enjoying it and it has encouraged a lot of good posts including your own and the one above.

Like I said the posts have been great on all your say pages so keep posting as you wish, but if you are engaged in banter on the general your say thread and into your head pops a post as considered and worthy of reading as the one above, please, for my benefit, post it as a topic so there is no chance i will miss it, lost amongst others replies.

Cheers guys for bigging me up like that! The post evolved as I wrote it! I would like to add a well done to thirtykane for starting the general your say thread. It gives an opportunity to engage with other fans without being restricted by a particular subject and without having to go on to another club’s forum. So cheers, guys!

I guess this is one bright spot out of the doom and gloom with the new format. Posters are more mindful of their words and this is a good sign, though I did came across a few silly comments, mainly to troll. I’ll be watching the developement of this site with more interest and hopefully, marshy and gang will take note of all the suggestion so far and keep on improving this site to make it more user friendly. Cheers!

I actually think Rodgers lost out because of his abilities, his first season wasnt that good and we flopped out of Europe because of that.
Then we had a easy campaign with one game a week and the team responded really well when they had a full week to focus on every match.
And as soon as European football started again he fumbled again, so every time Rodgers had more than one game a week to deal with results dipped.
Apart from that one season where almost everything went his way the team has been dire, terrible football, no offense, lousy defending, the win ratio under 50%.
Rodgers wanted possession football over here and he went on about it for 3 years with the team never playing possession football except for a few occasions and on the few occasions we kept possession it was against relegated teams.

He didnt implement his philosophy, he didnt manage to upgrade the team, the few players that blossomed got sold, his signings were not good enough.

I stated that I thought he would get until x-mas to get things right but having Klopps shadow looming over him did him no favours.

I wanna put it on record that I think Rodgers is a good manager but I dont think he has the abilities or experience to cope with a 60 game season.

I just don’t think Rodgers possessed a strong enough all round game to attain sustainable success, so I’m inclined to agree more with Bingo.
He rarely adapted for example to opposition threats, most of his success seemed to built on his best players and momentum, but when it came off the rails, all came crashing to a stop and he didn’t have any answers.

If he had beef with the committee, why when his stock was high after finishing 2nd did he not push FSG more for the players he wanted? That may have been a risky ploy but then he’s lost his job in the end anyway.

As for pressure, whilst the press become a dog with a bone, these are the realities of managing top sides, and if you can’t handle that, you’re in the wrong job. I know he had problems in his personal life, but I still maintain that his limited all round game cost him in the end as he had little to fall back on when the going got tough.
In the end he failed to even get the team properly motivated, and that’s a pretty basic requirement of managing a football team.

while I have no evidence to say rodgers didnt have the abilities to cope with 60 game seasons, I am pretty confident in asserting that he has never had a squad capable of that either. I wouldnt argue too much with a pool fan when judging their managers or team. I agree that there were a lot of things going for liverpool the season before last but dont think it was a complete fluke. He was able to play his best 11 week in week out, and that 11 was better than any 11 he could have put out since. He has to be given some credit for getting Liverpool playing so well and consistently though. I think you need to be very experienced to succeed at liverpool and the job was to soon for rodgers. Best of luck with Klopp to all pool fans on this thread anyway, the league is better when liverpool are good.

Genuine recognition and well played Lucky Destiny.

This is 100 times better than the ‘thumbs up’ system, although I’ll shoot myself in the foot by giving you the thumbs up 😉

Sensible, true mate this beats the thumb up system, but whats better is that on the old forum Hightowns post would have got plenty of thumbs down and a suprisingly low number of those who thumbed down would have either the courtesy or intelligence to offer their reasons. Now you can not thumb down, if you disagree you have to explain why, as mikus and notorious did so fairly and respectfully.

L/D, it’s actually quite compelling mate when you think about this particular post in the way it’s evolved along with your kindness and objectiveness against all those who’ve been crying for those thumbs to return.

I do like the ‘likes button’ don’t get me wrong, but this in itself is the perfect reply and one of which I reckon Mark would be proud of too.

    Cheers

P.S. England game at the moment needs a goal! Grrr!!
