With Man Utd in the hunt for a new central defender in January, we explain why Jose Mourinho could do far worse than look at Nathan Ake.

You mean forget Alderweireld,Maguire,Godin,Varane, and Boateng? Koulibaly and Ake would form an men-mountain cd pairing.

Thought he was excellent today to be fair but I don’t think he’s what we need. Our centre of defence is crying out for a leader and I don’t honk he’s that yet.7

I find these teamtalk articles very bizarre though…they’re hardly an authority are they?

Agree Ake was v good today but by the same token we scored 2 and should have had 4 more – Fred first half, Shaw 2nd half, Rashford 2nd half, Lingard 2nd half. Thats not even counting half chances for Martial, Sanchez header and 2 Herrera efforts.
Ake prevented one of those chances but would he have been MOTM and the answer to our prayers if we hit 6.
Agree with WG, we need a leader that grabs teammates by the scruff of the neck…

Forget Koulibaly but I see that dog Felipe Anderson bagged another couple today Tommy, to go with the one he got against us.

Did I call him a dog? How awfully racist of me.

Just don’t think there’s a big club player in him and he’s certainly not a Mohammed Salah in hiding.

Salah? Now there is a one trick pony. Dare I say one, maybe two season wonder?

Do you think teams might have cottoned on to Ashley Young’s revolutionary tactic last season of not allowing him to do whatever he wants?

You mean Ashley ” Roberto Carlos” Young? Did you see what he did yesterday,a few times? He want on a slalom, leaving players for dead!

Why not MacGuffin and Hatters at CB, with Gas and Redblood as the holding players?

Ake is young and there is room to improve but that’s the same situation with Lindelof so why not just hedge our bets there instead of spunking another £40-50m on a relatively unproven CB. We need an experienced, proven, world class CB to boss and instruct Bailly and Lindelof. If that means blowing our load on Varane or another CB like Gimenez (although he’s got a short fuse) then I’d go for it.

unless mufc has pictorial verification about Lukaku’s ‘fuse’ then it’s only conjecture

Don’t think Ake is the answer but more to the point who would play alongside any new CB? None of the 5 donkeys we currently have are good enough. Smalling and Lindelhof look like a pair of nervous wrecks, Jones has had his chances and proved an accident waiting to happen, Rojo was never good enough and Bailly looks like he just doesn’t have the brains or discipline to hack it. Truth is we need 2 CB’s and hope that TFM and Tuanzebe make it.

The thing is all our 5 defenders would be better than Ake if they were playing for Bournemouth or one of the smaller teams, a clear example is Evans and Keane, they are playing much better football when there’s no pressure on them and no one is monitoring their every move so no, Ake is not our answer, we need a proven defender and not just that, a proven leader too. I can’t think of anyone better for the job than Godin

@killyboye, Bailly is also only 24. Both have a lot of potential to improve.
Agree with @libanski, given a run of games without the pressure of playing for a top 6 club, i reckon even Rojo and Jones would make a decent PL partnership.
Also, apparently Chiellini and Godin both rejected us this summer. Either would have been a great short term fix while Lindelof, Bailly, TFM and Tuanzebe continue to develop and would have allowed us to sell both Rojo and Jones (God knows how much/little we’d get for them though)

Funny thing is it is not only the cb´s,its the fullbacks too.
Shaw and Young cant defend and dont attack properly. They play in a no mans land.

Come to think of it,whom of the first XI are United material?
    DeGea(yes)-Young(no)-Smalling(no)-Lindelof(no)-Shaw(no)
    Matic(no)-Fred(no)-Pogba(yes)-Mata(no)-Rashford(not yet)-Martial(yes).

So much money spent on what? I think Bailly is United material with another manager. Dalot looks promising.

I would go for a younger lineup with a 4-3-3 formation.
Bailly-Smalling-Lindelof-Dalot(yes Bailly can play rb and Dalot lb)
    Pereira-Herrera-Pogba
    Lingard-Rashford-Martial.
