Shocking scenes outside the stadium, France seems to have become a police state under Macron. They’ve been using these tactics regularly to subdue political protests, but it seems now to have affected their ability to provide security for major sporting events.

The police were treating human beings like cattle.
Credit to the fans for keeping their cool in the face of needless aggression.

This kind of thing could have easily led to a stampede, or induced medical episodes in any fans with health conditions. When I worked in security, the health of the public was paramount.
We shouldn’t host any big games in France again until they get themselves sorted out. I really hope this doesn’t just get swept under the rug, the police did the exact opposite of what they are there to do. Punitive action is needed.

Think the key to it is that the French don’t like the British, probably an anti brexit thing going on right now…but shame they ain’t so willing to police their beaches with the same gusto!

Heard they closed some hotspots and stuff where LFC fans were expected to hang out, like the Kop bar or whatever. Seems to me like they were actively looking for a problem with our fans. Could have escalated into something much worse. They should be stripped of the right to host major footballing events in the future.

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour. It is pretty clear to me that they were trying to pin their lack of competence on “English Hooligans” by trying to provoke disorder, which they never fucking got…and that aspect is so damn satisfying. Now, the likes of Reuters are digging into their handling of it and not their deflection efforts.

This is no good for the fans who were assaulted by police, or the ones who didnt make it into the match though.
There needs to be an inquiry, followed by fines and compensation for the victims.

UEFA/French authorities initially tried to blame it on “fans arriving late”.
That was quickly debunked and then they pivoted to “fans with fake tickets”. That’s now been dubunked also with families and friends of Liverpool players who got their tickets via the club were refused entry and in some cases tear gassed. Plenty of “celebrities” also suffered at the same hands including journalists who can report and verify what actually happened.

    Poor organisation
    Poor policing
    Lies
    Corruption
    Cover ups

What other event that you pay £400/500 to attend would you be treated so poorly? It’s a disgrace and didn’t happen in Madrid or Kiev.

It’ll all come out soon. I have a feeling there will be serious repercussions.

As just reported on the BBC website, at today’s French Senate investigation into the events at the CL Final, it admitted that all CCTV from outside the stadium on the day has been deleted.

Apparently all such footage is automatically deleted after 7 days unless requested it be saved. No such request was received in the time period and so it was deleted!

Anyone would think they had something to hide …..

Sir roger, as I commented on another thread last week, absolutely no one will be held accountable for what happened that night. Absolute disgrace. Still fuming over it. Nightmare of a night

I just didn’t get what they were trying to achieve. It’s not as if they weren’t used to hosting capacity football (and rugby) games, so why did they change their procedures for this one and why didn’t they just allow a really good-natured crowd that had all arrived 2-3 hours early to make the journey from the RER station to the stadium concourse at a steady and unrestricted pace? Talk about deliberately causing problems by bottlenecking the flow of spectators under the motorway bridge by parking police vans to decrease the width of the normal approach to about 20% of what it should have been. The best analogy is to take a busy motorway in rush-hour and to cone-off 4 lanes down to one and then wonder why you’ve created a 20 mile tailback. It was all the more frustrating as we were only a few hundred metres from the stadium concourse.

Athens in 2007 was a bit of a similar cock-up, but they had the excuse that the stadium had been rebuilt for the Olympics – without football-style turnstiles – and it wasn’t geared-up for an event like CL Final and my only ticket check was someone shining a UV light on it – so I blame UEFA for that one. Paris, however, was much more down to the French authorities.

Good news that UEFA have finally decided to refund the ticket prices to Liverpool fans – but it only applies to those fans who acquired tickets via the club allocation. We got some via the UEFA ballot – paid a lot more, still suffered from the chaotic organisation – but get sod all in compensation. It’s not like the French police asked individuals whether they bought their ticket via the club before they decided whether to shoot pepper spray in your face or not! Just wondering whether anyone else on here is in a similar situation and whether it’s worth carpet bombing UEFA with additional claims?

Mak>> Your comment from 30th May proved to be correct.

Honestly, I’m underwhelmed. I know that it wasn’t just buried and that thre was a lot of criticism landing their way some time after but a refund for some people isn’t quite what I had in mind.
    It’s not enough.
This is the problem I guess when you can’t file a class action suit. Also, where punitive damages can’t be applied in EU law.
These mechanisms would have them royally fucked.
At least they took some political and cultural heat for it, refunded some people but it’s nowhere near enough.
As you say, people who bought tickets via UEFA got the same treatment as fans who bought via LFC. Why are you not being refunded and also compensated for being assaulted with dangerous weaponry?
Before anyone says that tear gas or pepper spray isn’t lethal, anything that stresses out the body to that degree can be lethal, it’ll just manifest in a heart attack or the like.
Kids being tear gassed… Oh a refund? That makes it all better.

    Unacceptable.

If anyone does start a petition or find a fresh one then link it in here please.
The best that we can hope for now, is to not let this pittance of an apology effort to quieten us. In fact, this should make us even more vocal because it’s a fucking insulting feign at attrition and accountability.
