A chance to go top of the league!

Our last visit to Craven Cottage was in December of 2020 when it needed a late Mo penalty to rescue a point after the very infrequent scorer, Decordova-Reid, put them one up in the 25th minute. This fixture has a habit of us needing late penalties to get points. Milner scored the winner from 12 yards three years ago after Ryan Babel equalised (he had to do of course). 8 years ago Gerrard scored from the spot on the 90th min to give us all three points that night.

Fulham won the Championship by two clear points last season from Bournemouth helped of course by a certain, Fabio Carvalho. They almost let Bournemouth in at the tail end of the season winning just 4 of their last 11 matches but Bournemouth didn’t help themselves either with a similar record in the last few weeks.

One player we will have the watch is the extremely prolific Mitrovic who smashed in an incredible 48 goals in 56 appearances last season. Nuts! He scored 34 the season before. 82 goals in 2 seasons! Kin ell.

Who will start this? Well, no brainer really, it’s just who will start in the centre forward position (sorry, midfield position:).

Alisson, Trent, Matip (starter for me, Konate injured and not pulling up trees either pre-season, same with Gomez – atm I’d put Nat Phillips ahead of these two for sheer application), VVD, Robbo, Henderson, Thiago, Fabinho, Diaz, Firmino and Mo. Coin toss really between Bobby the Mid and Nunez.

    2-0 for us.

This is of course presuming that Alisson is fit.

ATM, Alisson, Kelleher, Konate, Ox, Jota and Jones are all injured, and no doubt Keita won’t be fit for Sat.

Just sitting here thinking about who will start between Firmino and Nunez and I think it’ll be Firmino.

I would start Nunez but he hasn’t been used as much as the others in pre-season. Maybe Klopp wouldn’t have been bringing him on as a sub in pre-season were he not going to do the same in that first match or 2 in the PL.

I would start Nunez and tell him to just go at them. Let them have it. If we can be ahead by the time it comes around to him coming on though, it would be less pressure… but he’s already shown that he can score against PL level teams, so…

As for the rest of the team, depending on fitness, they all pick themselves.
We’ll probably wallop Fulham but you never know with these early fixtures. Salah is 100% fit and SUPER motivated though. I can see him going nuts and destroying Fulham almost single-handedly.

If Nunez has the support of a fired up Diaz and Salah…. Oh dear, he’s gonna get quite the chances! He really just needs 1 goal to help him settle in. The trolls won’t be saying much if he gets started with even just 1 goal.

I’m gonna go with a 5-0 prediction. That is assuming Allison can play. If he isnt starting then we might not do as well.

My prediction is very high but I think this team will want to get off to as fast a start as possible and will be incredibly motivated from the get go. The anger of missing out last season will be a great big fire under our bellies.

Rob, the only player there who matters for this one match, is Allison. Freak scenarios where he gets injured in that match aside of course. The other players arent important. We have our main line-up all ready to go and if they stay fit, they get us the result we need.

I’d go with Nunez if fitness isn’t a concern just due to continuing the momentum from the last game. He’ll be on a high and will be desperate to go out again and perform.

I would have expected him to start against City for similar reasons but in the end he was only given 30 minutes. Maybe that goal against them has done enough to convince Klopp that he’s ready to be thrown in though?

Man, I hope so. 90 minutes against a newly promoted side is a great opportunity to get off the ground early.

Expect Klopp to exploit the 5 subs rule to the max, especially if we’re winning comfortably, thus bringing on the likes of Carvalho, Elliott, Firmino, Keita and Milner.

The hope for our midfield, short and longer term, rests upon the young prospects that we have2 and their ability to make the step up. In the short term, that means that they make the step up when required this season. For the long term, it is more about them showing the club that we need to purchase 1 or even 2 fewer midfielders in the coming summer.

As things stand, it could actually be possible that we’ll have to buy 3 midfielders within the coming 12 months. If Elliott can make a break-through, that number drops and our prospects in the immediate term improve dramatically.
I do think that Elliott (with luck) will prove to nullify 1 of those required transfers and also that he can help us win the PL this season.

This season will be too soon for Bajcetic but perhaps in the cups, he’ll show that he’s good enough to nullify the squad signing that I think we’ll require.

The 3rd I think is likely unavoidable and we’ll do whatever we can to sign Bellingham. I don’t know enough about Carvalho or how Klopp might want to adapt him. perhaps he can play deeper than people realise, or the more likely scenario that he learns to take over from Firmino.

So, I’m not actually that bothered to hear that Keita or Jones are injured. I don’t think that either are good enough. Jones might have some development on his side, so I’ll say “yet” for him but I’m not as positive about his chances as I once was.

What we need is some luck with our main 3 and then for Elliott to be able to step in and do well when needed. I know people don’t agree and that’s fine but IMO, Elliott has a very high potential ceiling and I think we might see it this season. We might end up depending on it too.

Looking forward tot he press conference though. I think we’ll learn whether Nunez will start or not, even if Klopp might be coy about it. We’ll gain enough to hopefully have a very good idea.

IMO he’s got to start him. Let’s drop the hammer on Fulham immediately.

I wouldnt try a new system with a new player on day 1, after using a 433 in preseason. There’s no chance of it I think.

The injury list is indeed crazy but we all knew we were carrying people on huge wages. Ok, some of these particular lads definitely carry themselves but you know who I mean.

I agree Mak, we may see 4231 here and there but 433 is the Liverpool Way and what the Academy follow too.

I do like the look of my 4231 tho! Puts Bobby and Nunez on the field at the same time with a nice double six of 2 from 3 of Hendo, Thiago or Fab behind.

With our midfield issues (we always seemingly have them) the 4231 ‘frees up a spot’ for Bobby, Keita, Harvey or Carvalho.

I also like the look of a 4231 in theory for now and in practice at times through-out the season but currently, we’d be losing a perfectly fit Hendo in order to fit Firmino in. I know this will blow some peoples minds but a fit Hendo as an 8 is going to be more effective than current Firmino as a 10.

At some stage Firmino might force Klopp to make a hard call, or more likely that we’ll lose a midfielder, or at least have trained the new lad up a bit more on our potential side formation etc etc…

I don’t think we’re going to see Diaz and Salah so wide that things are going to look weird, or maybe not even noticeably different for us. Nunez’s goal against City shows that he’s perfectly able to drop back in order to at least not have a marker when he comes in, so it won’t be just like we’ll have this guy who’s just gonna stand up front only, waiting for the ball to be lashed off his face into the goal.

I’ve had a keen eye on quite the number of FPL channels and almost none of the pros have Nunez in their teams. In one way I can see why but then Haaland is super popular… Ya, he’s a brilliant player but he’s going to suffer more at City than Nunez is here, at least tactically.

I’m noyt suggesting that people follow me because allllll the people who apparently know what they are talking about are all staying away from Nunez but the thing is, I feel like I know what I’m talking about, to enough of an extent to see that we are going to crush it this season (injury luck permitting)… and that Nunez is gonna be ONE HELL OF A FUCKING BANGER of a player.

I actually can’t believe that he’s not massively popular at only 9M. Either theya re right, or Klopp won;t start him… or they are all in some weird echo-chamber… Because Nunez is a fucking baller.

He’s the future beneficiary of Trent, Robertson, Thiago and Salah… oh ya and also whatever Diaz can manager too… but 5% of the pros are picking him.

    mental.
