I think were seeing that it can work if we have a large enough squad to cover all the competitions. Its fair to say the team have run out of steam after a great start to the season. The loss of one player to the Africans Cup is a factor, but we don’t have any quality to cover for him. Fenway is it stick or twist this transfer window?

its not just the loss of one player, we also lost Matip for 6 weeks and Coutinho has been out. That´s three key players and with others such as Klavan and Wijnaldum still settling. The squad is far from being able to challenge on all fronts, I´m still hoping to see a player come in during this window but the market is very limited this time around. Similar to what was going around last year around.

Julian Brandt is available on release clause 15m or so from next year. Surely we could get him now for 22 to 25m. Ya it’s a lot more but the release clause fee is maybe low.

He would have really helped us to rest players while keeping the quality up.

I think we’ve been worked out a bit. Teams know they can sit back and we will struggle to penetrate them, and they’ll get a few chances on the break or set plays to nick a goal or two. They know if they try to play an open game their chances of winning are reduced. Hopefully top teams don’t start using the same tactic!!

Tiredness and injury also of course are important factors. Matip was rusty last night, coutinho still finding his feet, no danny ings for striker rotation etc

TAA did a hell of a lot of work last night but for me, just like the United game, looked a little below the quality we needed (no criticism, he looks promising, just not there yet)

Milner looks off form too. Put in a great ball from the right at one point tho..

It must ve been the wind? Anyone knows whether Klopp was suggesting the wind slowed down the players?

We should change things up to play a less aggresive first half where we sit back and try to control the game and turn on the intense counterpressing in the 2nd half after the other team feels settled.

There has been a lot of talk about a winger, there has also been some talk about a midfielder but do you guys honestly think that Sturridge is doing enough to justify his salary and spot in the team? Our goals have completely dried up and he has had more than enough chances this month to make a case for himself.

There was a moment in last nights game which I thought was typical for him, someone puts a cross into the box, which the So´ton defenders deal with and head out of the box. Sturridge for some reason decides not to chase the ball, its only when he sees Bertrand run past him after the ball that he decides to go chasing and by that time it was too late. So´ton have regained possession and are heading towards our goal on the counter.

Its not something I have seen Firmino do, or Coutinho or for that matter Origi. Its not what Klopp wants from his players, its lethargic and his teammates suffer because of it.

I noticed that too bingo, he did give up on the ball and then got embarrassed by Bertrand. Not good enough. But I don’t think Sturridge is really where we should be placing blame to be honest, he didn’t pull up trees but against 6 defenders he has a tough evening on his hands. In the past month he mostly played in not our first team but with the kids to completely different situation. But yeah would have hoped for a few of his goals this month. Neither him or origi (or many others) have done enough in January

Mak – I was surprised we didn’t go for it in the first 20 mins last night. The patient approach didn’t seem to work in either leg. But yeah we need to do something to shake it up!

I’m still open to having my mind changed on Sturridge but I honestly think that’s only sentimental hopes and just generally unrealistic. The very short answer is that no, I don’t think Sturridge is currently worth it. He should be scoring goals even when he isn’t being quite the team player that Firmino is.

If he wants any hope of still being here when the summer transfer window closes he’d want to pull his socks up and start putting them away at a serious rate.

To be fair if he wants out to anywhere but china in the summer he needs to start performing too or he will end up being bid on by West Ham etc and I imagine he still views himself as better than that level

It pinpoints the problem we are facing, how can we press the opposition with a striker that is not prepared to do the dirty work Firmino for example provides.

Full throttle football is not sustainable with the paper thin squad we have. The all important pressing from the front is not something we can maintain without rotating players & we don’t have enough quality in depth to do that at this stage.
Mark my words, we have had a shed load of injuries recently & by the time we get all players match fit again we will have a mountain to climb to get into the top 4. We won’t simply turn on the tap & be awesome like earlier in the season, players will need time & we don’t have much of that considering the teams we are in direct competition with for a top 4 finish are all looking very good.
Don’t get me wrong, I expect us to regain some good form again, I just don’t think we will be able to make up the points, unless our rivals have a similar injury crisis that we’ve had.
Yes we are still in the top 4 but I have literally no confidence we will get anything from chelsea, they know exactly how to play us (as does the whole EPL now, sit back, frustrate, hit on the counter & wait for the inevitable mistake). For all our domination in games our defense ensures conceding is more than likely & with our misfiring attack we are struggling big time.

But full throttle football is the reason why we are in the top 4 now.

Redsforever, you just see what you want in my previous post. Thats fair enough it’s probably negative & it’s up to you how you read it so aside from going over the whole post again I’m basically saying full throttle football was awesome while it lasted but we’ve run out of gas & can’t maintain that intensity over a full season, especially without reinforcements, hence our dramatic decline in 2017.

aussie, i read an interesting stat yday. I agree we look tired but starts are saying we have ran more in the league in jan then we did in decemeber and november. So if we were that tired we wouldnt be covering the ground mate.

i think a big problem is that to many players are hitting bad form at the wrong time. Milner, clynne, can, and a few others.

bingo/mr mak, im agree about firminio. Hes our best option through the middle and has to play there all the time.

Like bob and ginger, i am really hoping sturridge gets back to the player he was but i dont think its going to happen as its plain to see his pace is gone. There was one ball he should have got to were he just about stopped it going out of play. Not sure whether he is worred he will get injured or what but hes not even the same player as last season. He was good last year, not great like 2014 but its just not happening. He is dropping off far to much. We then have no one looking for the ball over the top. I cant remember the last time i saw him beat a player. I still harbour a bit of hope for him but its diminishing by the game. Hes no were near as dangerous as he used to be. Such a huge pity as he is only 27 and has everything in him to be really top top class. Ill stil lgive him the rest of the season as i know what he can. He got the service the other night while in other games he hasnt. He should have had two goals the other night.

Number 8 actually i agree with most of your post. I posted something similar about full throttle footbal in another thread. We havent got the squad to sustain it during the busy period. But at the same time, its the reason why we’re in top 4. So maybe it was a gamble worth taking by klopp

Mr Mak – your post yesterday suggests we should play a less aggressive first half in order to conserve energy. I don’t think there was much aggressive about Wednesday’s first half, do you? I think it’s just a perfect storm that has hit us… other teams have worked out a plan to nullify our strengths, our key players have been injured, out of form or in Africa, and finally every time we are attacked we concede a goal.

I really don’t know what the answer, but hopefully Jurgen does

Redsforever: Absolutely mate, we are in this position because of the way we play & it’s been bloody awesome to watch, I’ve enjoyed the end of 2016 massively.
The only problem is we are in the marathon, not the 100m sprint & we look like we’ve exhausted all our energy in the 1st half.
Injuries have killed us, any team regardless of depth would struggle with injuries to 4 of their top players & we just don’t have the depth to continue that early season form & play full throttle.
I still believe we will come good again but i think it’ll be to late to save a top 4 spot, considering the form of our rivals.

sean I posted some stats about Sturridge in the general say… I highly doubt he will ever become the same player he was, he has lost his pace and like the stats state. Klavan and Lucas are even faster on the pitch than him.

Sean this is why I generally don’t like stats. We may have covered more ground in Jan but have you seen that awesome QUICK movement we had earlier? I know Mane is a big part of it but we aren’t exactly covering the ground with the zip we were.
