Surely on current form Luke Shaw is England’s best left back?
January 18, 2021 at 7:59 pm #1912820Can we sacrifice Ighalo,Martial,and Cavani and ger Haaland/Kane?
January 19, 2021 at 7:49 am #1912875Homer – I think defensively he probably is, yeah. But you look at Chilwell for the amount of goals he creates and he’d probably be first choice. And then the Premier League as a whole you can’t really look past Roberston. But yeah i think Shaw is in the top 3 left backs in the league. (Don’t tell Redblood!)
January 19, 2021 at 8:29 am #1912886Shaw is definitely great defensively but nowadays that’s not enough for a top level full back – you need to be an effective attacking outlet for your team if you want to be considered the best and if you want your team to BE the best.
It is no surprise that Liverpool and City have been the best teams recently when they have skillful, attacking full backs on either side. We have very good defensive full backs (maybe the best in the league on both sides), but offensively they are both very very poor and need to improve that side of their game.
Other than that, very happy with his current form.
January 19, 2021 at 8:31 am #1912887@redblood – I don’t think we can sacrifice all 3 of the clubs only strikers to get one in: Ighalo is out the door for sure and Cavani is 33 so we have to be a bit careful.
I would sell Martial and get in either of the two; keep Cavani for another year and then bring in a young striker or a backup (someone like Jovic or Dembele of Lyon for example).
January 19, 2021 at 11:11 am #1912939Ighalo is on loan, we couldn’t sell him if we tried.
We need to build the quality in the squad, and have backups so just bring a striker in and keep what we currently have. One in, one out for first team players isn’t the best way to build the squad as the lack of depth will become an issue.
We need to do what we did with LB and have two players fighting for the position, that brings the best out of the top players.
January 19, 2021 at 11:41 am #1912947I think the squad issues are multi-tiered. So at the bottom of the pecking order we have players like Jones and Rojo who simply have to go like TFM did. Doesn’t matter how much we get for them, they just need to leave and be replaced with players who could actually be called upon to play.
Then we have players in and around the first team who aren’t good enough to be Manchester United players such as Lingard, Pereira, Ighalo etc who we need to upgrade. Dan James may also fall into this category if he doesn’t improve dramatically.
Then we have ageing players like Matic, Cavani and Mata who need to be replaced, Van de Beek may already be a replacement for one of them.
Then, once all that’s done, we need to make decisions on several first team players. Are Martial, Lindelof, Fred etc really up to the task of delivering Premier League Titles at Old Trafford? Is Pogba going to leave?
We’re still 2/3 years away from having a fully functional squad at all levels that has good fringe players who can come in and do a job, top first 11 players who can go and win any game anywhere and then a sprinkle of star dust backed up by exciting academy players coming through the ranks.
I said it before it’s a 5-year job for Ole to revamp this squad.January 19, 2021 at 1:10 pm #1912988Sympathy-Dembele just joined Atletico I believe, but with Ighalo going,Cavani dead on his feet,we can only hope to sell Martial.
January 19, 2021 at 1:36 pm #1913000You forgot tierney from the list
He is also right up there for meJanuary 19, 2021 at 1:38 pm #1913003Tierney is by far the best in the league currently.
January 19, 2021 at 1:39 pm #1913004Sympathy-But I was thinking that we have Rashy and Greenwood to play as strikers, therefore being able to let go of the others.
January 19, 2021 at 2:13 pm #1913032No, Tierney is not the best in the league!
January 19, 2021 at 2:16 pm #1913037@redblood – Oh I must’ve missed that Dembele to Athletico Madrid transfer! In any case, we should get someone young/willing to play 2nd fiddle in to be behind Kane / Haaland if we had to break the bank for either.
On Greenwood and Rashford, I think their best positions are wide right and left respectively – don’t think pushing them to play as strikers will help their development or help us to get results; Kane and Haaland are the kind of players we need and I’d much rather we break the bank for Haaland at this stage than Sancho… though both would be great š
Cheers
January 19, 2021 at 3:34 pm #1913060@Steveo – Our @happy chappy ‘informed’ me that Tierney was shite ages ago mate, surprised you haven’t noticed it yet!!ššš
January 19, 2021 at 4:11 pm #1913079Blacky – Ha ha, well he was shite when we were talking about him last. He was amazing for Celtic and he moved to Arsenal and didn’t set the world alight. He’ll be there 2 years in August and we’re only starting to see performances from him now. Given how quick you are to point out Luke Shaw’s inconsistency i’m surprised you haven’t noticed Tierney’s.
January 19, 2021 at 4:26 pm #1913085Tierney has been the oustanding player the last few weeks, especially since the 2 Duracell bunnies @ Liverpool have somewhat slowed down,as expected.L.Shaw joined United in 2014 for a world record fee for a teenager,if I can remember correctly.Almost 7 years and we are still stuck with him.How much longer do you tolerate?
January 19, 2021 at 4:32 pm #1913087Signing Donny should have resulted in Mata,MessiJL,and Andy leaving permanently.Signing a beast of a DM should enable the club to finally get rid of the dinosaur that is Matic.Oh,and just read somewhere that Bruno has only scored 1 goal against the top teams,a pen against Spurs, surely not right for the best player in the league, right???
January 19, 2021 at 4:48 pm #1913096Redblood – Luke Shaw is 25 years old, he’s spent a long time recovering from an absolutely horrific leg break. Not just physically but emotionally he’s now getting back to his best and performing at a top level on a consistent basis. So, if he continues like he is right now, there’s absolutely no reason to sell him. In fact talking about selling him is just plain stupid – he’s probably our most important player behind Bruno and Maguire.
January 19, 2021 at 5:02 pm #1913100@happy – That’s yet another classic smokescreen mate!. BFL has been at OT nearly SEVEN years now and throughout all that time you have continually insisted he’s great even when he was repeatedly shite, but as per usual when discussing another teams players you write them off at the first available opportunity!
It’s they same sort of ‘logic’ that insisted Phil Jones was going to come good, even after he’d been at OT for 5 years or more! If he had been doing his repeated farm labourer impressions playing for one of our main rivals 100% guaranteed you would have been laughing your cock off at the useless, gurning fucker!!šššJanuary 19, 2021 at 7:01 pm #1913133Iām not saying he is the best but on current form he is top 3 been our best player and his year
Not to hard with my lot but we do have a couple like saka
Dave, he was badly injured when he signed and has had a few more
Since injury free the lad has carried us… also 5 clean sheets on the trot
From us!
If he stays injury free he will be up there with the best -
