Firstly he is committed. That alone means nothing, for commitment without talent will only get you so far. But in the last few games he’s played for us he has shown a real range of passing. I doubt he will be be the DM quarterback style player we need but almost completely under the radar he’s been picking our passes for fun.March 7, 2018 at 2:43 am #1608299
He needs to do it consistently. As a captain you should turn up even when your team isn’t playing well and Henderson hasn’t done that. When shit hits the fan he fades away into the background. As far as I know he has a permanent injury which will restrict the number of games he plays too. I don’t doubt his ability as a footballer because at his best he was a key component of an unlikely title push. However, since then the injuries appear to have caught up with him as he’s no longer the marauding box-to-box midfielder he used to be nor has he displayed the tactical acumen of a top class defensive midfielder. A lot of the soft goals we’ve conceded this season have been attributed to lack of cover from the midfield, and ultimately as the assigned “DM” and as the captain a lot of the blame will fall his way. Pesonally feel he’s not being played in his best position as a box-to-box midfielder but on the other hand don’t feel he has the legs for it anymore either. Given the number of games he plays every season and what he brings to the table, he would make a solid option from the bench but any argument for us to rely on him, as a captain no less, just doesn’t make logical sense.March 7, 2018 at 2:57 am #1608300
Well said Razor, I was going to spit out something very similar but u saved me the bother.March 7, 2018 at 5:36 am #1608304
We want to challenge for the title we need an upgrade on henderson in that DM/deep lying midfielder position that he plays in now.March 7, 2018 at 11:07 am #1608500
Which is why we are interested in Jorginho.March 7, 2018 at 11:40 am #1608524
Whatever he brings, it leaves one hungry and it’s not enough to justify captaincyMarch 7, 2018 at 11:54 am #1608536
I expect Grujic to be given a chance after his loan before Klopp goes in the transfer marketMarch 7, 2018 at 11:55 am #1608538
Jurgen apparently said yesterday that Hendo has plugged the gap left by Stevie G or has stepped out of his shadow. Now I hope and pray that is a misquote because if not then I have to question our managers sanity. Hendo hasn’t even plugged the gap left by Shelvey ffs. Yes he played well at the weekend but to mention him in the same sentence as Stevie G is crazy. He is at best average and I personally believe we are weaker with him in the side. Captain material? Maybe for Wigan or Derby Co but not Liverpool. Virgil would be ideal skipper for me.March 7, 2018 at 5:07 pm #1608715
What does Henderson bring to the table? That in itself is a bold assumption..
Razor, sorry, I have no recollection of Henderson as a ‘marauding box to box midfielder’, I must have missed that game 🙂
People say that the Gerrard comparison has hindered Hendo. I disagree. I think it has helped him no end. He gets a free pass everytime that comparison is made. So the more it is made, the more he escapes true scrutiny. It’s not as if he’s been the next best thing to Gerrard, or the best DM in the Prem – just not as good as Gerrard. He’s been an average player from day one and is not even close to being considered one of the best around – and never will be.
He isn’t fit for purpose (literally most times) and you have to remember that this is a player who has ‘ended up’ at DM because he previously failed in AM/CM positions. Had he not been English, he would have been jettisoned many moons ago.
Whatever it is that he brings to the table (ketchup, couple of doilies?), it is most definitely not the top table….PeaceMarch 7, 2018 at 5:48 pm #1608734
davinci, how is Texeira doing?March 7, 2018 at 8:23 pm #1608782
A thread on Henderson and up pops Davinci!March 7, 2018 at 10:18 pm #1608848
He needs to be phased out if we are to take the next step. Henderson is a trier, but I don’t rate him in terms of quick transitions which is what Klopps teams demand.March 10, 2018 at 9:30 am #1609837
Not interested in the captaincy debate again. Think many of you are looking at Henderson as a Gerrard replacement, of course he will fall short in every comparison. Gerrard was one of the all time greats, if he was playing in his prime now, in the current market he’d worth over 200m.
By all means if you know of a worthy successor we could sign I’m all ears.
But Henderson is not a Gerrard replacement. Never has been, never will be.
What I think he does for us that seems to go unnoticed is his range of passing. He can pick out a cross field pass with accuracy under pressure, then if he looses the ball he is the first to chase it down.
Now while we currently play best with fast, short passing and quick movement, when we come up against deep lying, well organised defences we often go about playing our normal short pass, quick movement game and the match passes by with very little goal chances. It’s like we get stuck in a loop of doing the same thing and only for the pace of salah/mane and the trickery of Firmino we’d be very easily nullified.
I know Coutinho brought a creative spark to our midfield and that needs to be replaced but of our current midfield options few can pick out that cross field pass with accuracy that stretches a defence and moves the pressure. Henderson can. He’s actually pretty good at it too.March 10, 2018 at 1:25 pm #1609980
I’d have Henderson in over Milner.March 10, 2018 at 6:31 pm #1610223
Henderson was certainly missed today.
