As I think about wending my way to the Shrine tomorrow for what may well be the last Prem football for some time I recall our first home game in this league and am slightly amazed to find that it was 15 years ago (Leeds who stuffed us 3-1). It doesn’t seem that long and I hope it doesn’t take another 16 to get back because I’m pretty sure to miss that!

Of the teams we played that season only 10 are still in the EPL. Fulham might well be rejoining them soon but most of the rest have faded into mid-Championship obscurity or worse. Our fate perhaps? I don’t know how many hundreds of thousands of pounds our 12 seasons in the Prem have accumulated but are we that much better off than all those years ago? So much appears to have been wasted over the past couple of years in particular during which time we have almost certainly made a lot of very average players very wealthy.

It has been traditional for the players to circuit the ground after the last home match in recent times. I wonder if that will happen this year and if so just what reaction they might receive? Difficult to predict but probably better than it should be if we sneak an unlikely win perhaps?

How are teams outside the top 5 or 6 going to catch up. I doubt whether any can, Leicester being the temporary exception in 2015 but ALL below top 6 are at risk of relegation each season. I would wager our budget for that first year in Prem was one of the bottom 3 to 5 just like today. The top 6 earn extra revenue via sponsorship etc and pay inflated prices which drives the market up. We may earn more but we pay out more for the same level of player. The winners are the players and agents, the losers are the clubs and fans below the top 6, it is not a fair playing field! I don’t know when we will be back but I do know I cannot get WBA out of my blood so will continue to support in sickness and health.COYB.

We’re not down yet although it looks an impossible task. We’ve managed to bounce back before so no reason to suggest we won’t again. It all depends on the management. We’re going to lose a few players although some won’t be missed! Let’s hope we get a decent manager and people who want to play for the club! Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
