Ole has said he is looking to bring one or two experienced signings in to the club in January to help the younger players.

I would say a striker is top of the list. Not sure if the second player would be a midfielder or winger though.

I know a lot on here would be against it, but I would be happy with Mandzukic. Great player in leading the line. Works hard and holds the ball up well too.

The problem with Mandzukic is that, at the moment at least, we’re playing counterattacking football. We’re soaking up pressure and looking to score on the break. From that perspective Mario just isn’t quick enough. I’d agree with getting someone of his character in but from a practical playing perspective I can’t see what he’d bring to the table.

maybe the only reason you play counter attack is lack of a plan B that he would give you and be able to take a cross and hold up play and alow for more than counter attack?

Experience signings sounds like cheap knackerbags to me. In fairness though its hard to bring in anybody decent in January because no club would want to lose them mid-season if they’re any good.

I’d agree with Mac, it’s hard to get anybody decent in January without playing a premium, on top of the ‘Man Utd are fucked lets take them to the cleaners’ premium we’ll also have to pay. If we got someone over 30 in during the Jan window, then I’d only offer an 18 month contract to the end of next season with an OPTION to extend. That’s a big IF though.

Mandzukic and Rakitic sounds about right, both players not wanted @ their current clubs, past their best, and in January you cant get players you want.As long as they come on a cheap or loans,I wouldnt mind.

@steveo, maybe that’s the case but it’s the same scenario as your get the ball to Auba and hope he scores plan, what’s you plan B again?

I think slow as fuck was the description you were searching for killy. Sorry but it’s the wrong way to go. Mandzukic and Rakitic just won’t get us into the top four. We’d be better off rebuilding with young, hungry, athletic talent, and I don’t necessarily mean Rice and Madison, both of whom will be ridiculously expensive. Van de Beek and Havertz are the kind of players we should be aiming for.

Killy, we dont have one either after losing Giroud, he was that target hold up link up player…i wasnt knocking your club just saying that might be the reason he would be wanted and fit in so you can try other tactics….as i hope we do at some point! 😉

I think Mandzukic would fit the counter attacking tactic as he would hold the ball up and pass out wide to Martail, Rashord or James to play them in instead. he certainly hasn’t got the pace to worry anyone.

It’s a case of having to cut your cloth accordingly, so we either wait until the right player becomes available or get someone in to fill the gap. We’d still need another striker in the summer, whoever signs in Jan, as we really don’t have a striker at the moment anyway.

If the choice was to carry on as we are now or sign an older striker like Mandzukic what would be your preference?

If Martial could stay fit I’d put him through the middle and he’d probably get us goals. We still need a striker though, badly. We need character more than anything

No point buying stop gaps unless they’re going to help us achieve something significant, like top four. So the question you have to ask is will Mandzukic and Rakitic get us top four? If the answer is yes, then signing them at a reasonable cost would be justified. Not sure Rakitic’s price in particular would be reasonable though and we maybe end up with another Matic. If they don’t get us top four then they absolutely shouldn’t be signed and we should write off the season and continue to rebuild with the right players.

I’d rather us get relegated than start signings these old fuckers! It might also finally convince the Glazers to sell up now that they’ve milked the club to extinction.

I’d support getting Mandzukic for £10m on a short term contract, we’d get a chunk of it back in shirt sales if he bangs a few goals in.

We only have 2 strikers in Martial and Greenwood. Greenwood needs more time and Martial has already missed quite a few games.

He ticks all the boxes, experience, leadership, physical presence, work rate. It’s a no brainer for me, even if he knocks in 3 goals and acts as a role model and coach for the others.

It’s not just a top 4 spot we’re playing for, we could get in the champions league via the UEFA cup again, or win a domestic trophy.

Whilst the squad is some way from competing for the league, it’s not too many good players away from being able to sneak a trophy.

I’d be happy to sign either Manduzkic or Edinson Cavani (will be in final 6 months of his contract when the Jan transfer window opens) on an 18 month contract. Either could come in and have an immediate impact while Martial, Rashford and Greenwood develop.

Just as importantly though is a CM as Matic’s legs have gone and Fred hasn’t shown any hint of being United standard yet. Emre Can? Would be a controversial signing being a former Liverpool player. Maybe a loan deal till the end of the season

Midfield is more important to me. When we have 2 of Perreira, Lingard, Matic and Fred starting every game we’re in trouble. You could have Ronaldo up front, but without anyone decent behind he’ll never get a chance other than the ones he creates himself.

The problem in signing these old players is that we then have a problem getting rid of them. Basically this season is written off isn’t it? We just need to stay mid(ish) table and see where we get to in the Europa League. So why would we buy these old players in January who A) will probably not get us into the top 4 and B) then be not part of next seasons plans come summer.

We just need to suck it up this season I think, avoid relegation!!!
Buying players in January, who will not be part of the future plans of the club, regardless of how successful they are between February and May is already a doomed plan!
    Simple as that!
