In for Jonny Evans from WBA …what do you think?..
August 16, 2017 at 8:06 pm #1518148Unbelievable….so much for bringing average age down and I do not believe he is better than Mangala….then again…what do I know….I always thought Hart was better than Bravo and Willy. It sounds like desperation to me to sign somebody.
August 16, 2017 at 8:37 pm #1518154He is error prone (remember the 6-1 thrashing at Old Trafford?). We already one centre back who makes errors, we don’t need another.
August 16, 2017 at 8:49 pm #1518159Mixed feelings about Evans… I remember saying to a United fan the last time they won the league (pleasingly quite a while ago) that their first team wasn’t any better than ours, but their fringe squad players – and I named Evans as an example – were better than ours. He’s more authoritative than in those days, and has been very good at West Brom/for N Ireland. I think the 6-1 at Old Trafford isn’t a good way to judge him as we’d only scored one before his sending off, which Mario “bought”. For me, the questions revolve around how much we’d use him and whether he’s better (ability AND finance-wise) than the Mangala option. And I don’t know!
August 17, 2017 at 12:37 am #1518229My first reaction is why would we do this? Is he better than Mangala (still have hope he will come good), Adarabioyo or Denayer?
Only be happy with this deal if we manage to swap him for Bony 🙂
August 17, 2017 at 5:39 pm #1518655Not for me. Dont think he is better than what we have.
August 18, 2017 at 8:06 am #1518801All I can say is forgetting Mangala for now, we have Denyer and Adi????? He isn’t better than them no chance and having a player who openly sipports the swamp, noooooooo seriously not for me BIG time
August 18, 2017 at 9:31 am #1518861Evans has come on a long way in the past 3-4 years: being key for Northern Ireland has really helped him: I’ve always been conflicted about him having grown up in NI but with him being such a staunch red but if he came to City and applied himself like Schmeichel did, then happy days!
I still think we are seriously missing a trick if we don’t coach up Mangala to be a top CB, and it weakens my counter to people who say managers like Guardilola just want ready made success, when he is supposed to be a top Coach – but then again, no one here knows the day to day and our other young CBs may not show enough application or desire to make it to the top
August 18, 2017 at 10:03 am #1518875Two points on Evans: 1. his stats seem to be broadly in line with other senior EPL defenders (which might imply he’s at least as good as the incumbents at City); 2. it could be there’s a dilution of his swamp fervour if he was paid enough money….
Yes, on the face of it seems strange that Mangala hasn’t made the grade at City – he certainly looks the part – but there’s obviously something going on between his ears that dampens on -field performance.
August 18, 2017 at 10:08 am #1518876Agreed mcfc, I don’t care who an employee supports as long as they can apply themselves properly to the job at hand. I am concerned however that we are letting another quality CB go( boateng) without giving them a decent chance and / or proper coaching. Still have reservations over Pep and actually how good a coach he is, I was hoping he would be the one to buck the trend and start making use of this fantastic academy we have.
August 18, 2017 at 3:38 pm #1519104mcfc….agree…I do think we are missing a trick with Mangala, He is not as bad as portrayed and given the right coaching and fitting in with the new teams tactical game I think he would do as well as Evans or Gibson or others talked about…so what is the point? We must not forget our young Academy player as well, who has done OK in his brief showing and with good Pro’s around him could blossom quickly this season
August 18, 2017 at 3:40 pm #1519106My opinion about Evans is he will be OK against the muscular players and good in the defensive box, but we will see Red cards
August 19, 2017 at 6:32 pm #1519711I think this is simple…
He’s experienced
He is a left sided centre half
He can play left back (meaning it’s not a necessity have to purchase a LB for cover for Mendy)
He is Home-grown
He is relatively cheap – in this market (although I’m staggered at £18M+)Given all that above it makes sense especially if we are targeting a large spend on Sanchez or Mbappe.
The clear downside is his connections to the Swamp Dwellers.
If he has a blue shirt on I’ll support him.
August 20, 2017 at 11:03 am #1519936Goatistuta – I think he’s significantly better than Denayer and Adarabioyo (the latter may well develop impressively, but Denayer’s gone backwards).
Bluefen – he’s also a leader/organiser, which we need if Vinnie’s injured. He makes the West Brom and Northern Ireland defences really tight.
I suspect Pep considers Mangala too error-prone and not a good enough distributor…August 20, 2017 at 10:24 pm #1520264Good point on organiser – VK is the only organiser in our squad imho
August 21, 2017 at 4:50 pm #1520654I would agree about the “organiser” bit and maybe, just maybe…he will tell somebody to guard the post, for some unknown reason VK has not done this but maybe there was a plan…..but it did not work…..so “organiser” yes. He is more likely to be caught out for speed but with quick players around him maybe this will work as well. The only other thing I would say is I am pleased Pep is giving at least a little thought to defending. Being an wx Red, I have no problems with him either, they rejected him and we pay his wages now…I think the guy will have enough about him to respect City now
