Mourinho shouldn’t be criticised for releasing deadwood, it’s every managers job to determine whether players are good enough for the first team. Mourinho does have a rep of not giving youth a fair crack though. We can only really judge this at utd by the end of the season. If Rashford and co are left to rot, then it will be fair judgement. With what happened with Lukaku and De Bruyne, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.
August 12, 2016 at 10:25 am #1159929Funny, all the same excuses are now being offered that Chelsea fans gave during his stint at CFC. Anyhow, Let me have my fun baiting United fans… You’ll be up there this season and possibly half of next before the squad get fed up. Everyonie, enjoy the season and hope it’s as exciting as last. Best of luck
August 12, 2016 at 10:31 am #1160016D1rtyH4rry- I’m sure Mourinho knows that he will be shot down like a crow if he let this happens. I totally agree with you that it’s too early to judge him if he will ditch or promote the youths. Let’s wait and see. If he ditch Rashford and TFM, I will happily put my head on the chopping board. TFM and Rashford is someone I regarded highly after Pogba as they bring the relax feeling when you see their names on the team sheet day in day out.
August 12, 2016 at 10:33 am #1160031Good debate with less trolling. I appreciate that. Thanks guys
August 12, 2016 at 10:54 am #1160091I have to give it to you RDP. You’ve excelled at baiting here. In fact, I’d possibly go as far as to say you’re a master at it. A master baiter. There must be another word for it…
August 12, 2016 at 11:54 am #1160325number 7… Look, Jose to united means united will finish top two given the signings this season. Essentially we’re looking at a two horse race, two big horses at that, two sides who have spent big in Manchester. If the Manchester clubs fail to claim the top two spots this year, then it falls to the also rans. Chelsea could be there but I think top four will be the priority this year. Arsenal will always be there under Wenger.. Liverpool could be the dark horse. I’m going to go soil the front of my pants with excitement juice ahead of the new season.. no need to be a master baiter for that.
August 12, 2016 at 12:16 pm #1160355Haha RDP fair points. I just think it’s a tad naive to think the problems with promoting academy players at Chelsea, and other top clubs, don’t run deeper than just Jose. I always get the feeling that some Chelsea fans think Jose is the sole reason no academy players have made it at Chelsea since John Terry some 20 years ago. There’s never any mention of the other 12 or so managers you’ve had in that time, which suggests to me that it is a much deeper problem at the club. As 999 alluded to, Chelsea aren’t alone in struggling at that, though.
August 12, 2016 at 12:23 pm #1160364Alfie. I agree that Jose’s track record means people will be quick to jump on him for it, whereas because the likes of Klopp has a bit more reputation for developing youth people assume those that he sells are deadwood.
The fuss about McNair and Love is a bit OTT as you say, as they would struggle to make a premiership first 11 let alone Manchester Uniteds.
Personally I think a clear out is good as it raises the bar for the squad and removes people who would potentially be unhappy by not playing. You are better keeping limited numbers if high potential youngsters around the first team – to give them more chance.
August 12, 2016 at 12:58 pm #1160466RDP – I could easily say that its a two horse race with Chelsea and Liverpool given that they haven’t got any European distractions and have both added players to their ranks. If those two clubs fail to claim the top two spots this year, then it falls to the also rans. The two Manchester clubs could be there but I think top four will be the priority this year.
See how easy it is to put the pressure on one club and take it away from the other…
August 12, 2016 at 1:03 pm #1160478liverpool havent wonthe league in 26 years MT. Chelsea finished 10th last season
liverpool have had 3 title challenges in 26 years. utd and coty have spent ove 130m net each. Liverpool have spent 20m net.city and utd have the two best managers in the league and in the world. Utd are in the el. That is were their youth team players can get progress. Utd have everything to be champions this season
August 12, 2016 at 1:19 pm #1160505Mourinho has once again shown his complete disdain, disregard, and downright hate for youth by sending Januzaj out on loan.
The bastard.
August 12, 2016 at 1:30 pm #1160541Sean, I see you’ve succumbed to net spend.???.
Good post though mate the title is between the two Manchester clubs and Arsenal if they make a couple of strategic signings imo. I think it will be an exciting season. Cheers buddie 999
August 12, 2016 at 1:49 pm #1160607Manthistle. The pressure comes from the amount of money the clubs have spent. Chelsea have to be in the mix for a percentage of the season. But jose and pep bring their own pressures. dropping 100 million no a player deemed surpless to requirements is a larger gamble than Matic returning to Chelsea. i wrote a post about that not so long ago. It’s a brave move by United, as is city’s spending with a new manager.
Number 7… there are two models of how to run a premiership club emerging. The likes of Southampton and a lesser degree spurs who have promoted youth heavily and been rewarded for it. Interesting as it may be, have a read on Sunderlands youth ranks and how they’re players are on the verge of breaking intio the senior squad. Moyes has obviously just signed two united players who will probably go on and have a very decent career in the league. Given how poor the top sides were last season and how exceptional Leicester played, I think other clubs will follow the youth promotion route. Everton, West Ham among the clubs who are seeing a payoff from developing kids through the academy.
August 12, 2016 at 1:49 pm #1160613Sean – I was just highlighting its very simple to say Utd and City should be the top 2 because they’ve spent the most when there are many other factors to consider.
August 12, 2016 at 1:53 pm #1160631Didn’t the two Manchester clubs spend the most last summer as well? That got them 4th and 5th. It only works that way if you buy the right players. Time will tell if they got it right this summer or not
August 12, 2016 at 2:00 pm #1160640@Johnny. Spot on. I remember Bodgers spending about 150 million on a raft of substandard players a couple seasons back. The key is to buy quality.
August 12, 2016 at 2:01 pm #1160643hatters, it was a net spend of 35 m lol.
nine, im not using net spend to my advantage but i still disagree with the argument lol.
August 12, 2016 at 2:07 pm #1160670Hatters, and both Manchester clubs still have huge flaws in their teams despite the money spent this summer
August 12, 2016 at 2:09 pm #1160679number seven: Afternoon Chris, a very fair point mate, youngsters not coming through at Chelsea is much much broader than just Jose even allowing for all the years he wasn’t there.
Tbh I thought McEachran was going to make it and he still might come again he looked a prospect and Carlo obviously rated him and began playing him but then Carlo was gone and then AVB took over and he didn’t get much game time and went backwards.
The above has been part of the problem because to have a real chance of bringing young players through you need a bit of longevity. That together with Managers at Chelsea being under constant pressure to deliver CL football and compete for trophies every season has made it very difficult to bring Chelsea Academy players through to first team players.
There are a few at Chelsea now who have been at Chelsea from 8 or 9 who you would think have a real chance of coming through but whether they will considering everything is a tough call. Cheers 999
August 12, 2016 at 2:10 pm #1160694Sean, Lol!
