Better than most teams first choice? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Yes Ginger, you are right about results ultimately counting. However, that doesn’t stop performances being analysed and criticised where appropriate, be that at team level or individual level. Take the blinkers off.

You telling me to take the blinkers off is delicious irony.

Against Chelsea he was MOTM putting in 8 tackles and interceptions and completely shutting Werner down. Against Sheffield VAR gave a penalty for an offence that 1. Wasn’t even a foul because he got the ball and 2. Wasn’t even in the box.

Meanwhile Gomez, as a last man has been consistently letting players go past him on a whim and losing almost half his duels in both the air and ground in the PL this season. I don’t see any appropriate criticism there…

Completely shutting Werner down? What about when Werner danced past him and left him trailing in his wake for the penalty incident? Dreadful defending.

Couldn’t agree more that the Sheff Utd pen was soft but the officials begged to differ. However, the defending by him in that situation which caused it was also dreadful.

SirRoger – Not having a go, but just trying to understand what your angle is re Fabinho. Are you saying you don’t think he should be deployed at CB? or just that he is a liability when he plays there? I think everyone agrees it’s not an ideal situation, but from my point of view he’s done better than expected.

If you’re going to talk about players dancing past other players and overall shitty defending, Gomez let it happen every game to the extent that every team we played against this season has targeted him as a weak link. Even that Danish side did it when 19-year old Williams was on the field. You can’t be criticising Fabinho and then completely ignoring when other players have done a lot worse, especially when that isn’t his natural position.

As for the officials, the club themselves made it abundantly clear what they thought of them so I wouldn’t be holding their opinion in any high regard. In fact the only referee in England I think is worth his salt is Michael Oliver. The rest of them have shown themselves to be bumbling idiots.

My angle is that I don’t get why certain posters on here have gone overboard about his CB performances without acknowledging that as well as he has done, he’s had some dreadful moments which show that he should be nothing more than emergency CB. And in my opinion, that means there should be 4 ahead of him.

For whatever reason, one of last season’s 4 was let go over the summer and was not replaced. And no, it doesn’t take hindsight to see that was a poor decision.

Razor: the discussion was about Fabinho. Stick to that rather than deflect.

As for Michael Oliver, wasn’t he in charge against Everton? Had a blinder, didn’t he? To be fair, I do rate him usually and agree that most could be better.

    SirRoger:
While I agree with you that we could have done with another CB before Fabinho, let’s not forget Gomez has not been in fantastic form recently and Lovren is also mistake prone. Remember CB is not Fabinho’s regular position but he will learn.

Our worst performer has been Van Dijk, i dont get the hate that Gomez is feeling at the moment, kinda feel like some here are just using him as an scapegoat

Bingo. While I don’t think VVD has been the worst, I do agree that Gomez has become the scapegoat for the failure at times with the defence, all bar maybe Robertson have made mistakes, but Gomez gets all the stick.

Gomez is only 23! I think hes even younger than Nat Phillips who just made his first team debut last month, Gomez made his liverpool debut 5 years ago. If prime Van Dijk is the standard we are going to measure all our centre backs at, then I doubt 23 year old Van Dijk gets into our first 11. Gomez is a great defender, he’s lacked a little in consistency at times but once recovered from this latest injury expect to see a lot of him! And he is really going to continue to grow with Van Dijk and Alisson around him.

Fulcrum, in agreement regarding Gomez. Just needs a big improvement in concentration. His lapses have allowed the opposition space. Often gets caught ball watching and I am not so sure he’s the ‘full package’ defender to have next to Trent who’s 1v1 defending, I think, will always be questionable (he’s a wing back, not a full back). So we have an average 1v1 right back and a right centre back that has frequent bouts of ADD. With Joe and Trent teams will constantly target that side and that needs taken care of. It happens almost every game those two start.

You also have to take into consideration & I have said this many times, the right defence have Salah who doesn’t do near as much defending as Mane on the left.
