On the contrary,I’m glad you had mentioned the game against man united at home because it is exactly that game that showed flaws in our system. If you analyse mustafi’s mistake,he is a defender who likes to pass a lot rather than hoofing it clear. He was looking for a pass couldn’t find anyone,so tried and dribble past which ultimately was the wrong decision. But saying that, how can no one be available for the defender to pass to?Yes it was suspicious how mustafi went right off injured but he didn’t play for 2 weeks after that as well.

We started the wrong system,a five man defense and we got exposed too early on in the game.Against a team that masters the field of defending,it was near impossible to get anything after going 2-0 down.To look back at it,I was actually ashamed to lose to a poor man utd side at home.It all but confirmed how shit our mentality has been.

we should still have won that game if we could have put away the many chances we had before their final goal….still next season at least should be different at least!

I agree a lot of our games where we lost last year was blamed on the defence or holding midfielder when in fact our forwards were to blame. There were so many games where we had loads of possession and did not created clear cut scoring chances, or even when we had the majority of possession and also created several clear cut chances but never took them. The other team would have one or two chances sometimes because of our mistakes and score all we would talk about was the mistake and not that fact we did not create or that we missed chances. Man U was a classic example!

muffler_1, it wasnt just the Man Utd game he cost us a goal in he did it repeatedly throughout the season. Southampton, Everton, Man Utd, Man City in the League Cup, Athletico in the home tie of the Europa Cup. His errors have directly led to somewhere in the region of 10 goals conceded this season, his disruptive influence which has the rest of the defensive in constant panic will have led to many more. He has been slated by Keown, Neville, Merson, Nicholas, Souness, Shearer and just about every pundit out there. He has even had Aaron Ramsey rip him apart but he doesnt even seem bothered by his inept displays. How many points as he cost us never mind the Europa Cup. He is simply a liability and needs to be dumped, sadly we will be lucky to get half of what we paid for him. Awful player and a total waste of money.

Sorry Tso he just fumbled it just watched it again and with that pressure from Lingaard you just dont dribble and tries side flick to Xhaka thats just basic defending.

@ oracle i only gave one example i know there is more of course. But i also recognize the fact the whole organisation at the back was a shambles this season.

Depending on what we sign in that area he is not my first choice and for £30 m you expect more

muffler – my point is all defenders make mistakes. There’s no excuses, that and man city in the final you simply can’t do that at the top level. But we wouldn’t have won the league cup even if he hadn’t made that mistake,we got dominated from start to finish and hardly a sniff at goal.mustafi probably made more mistakes than others where last season is concerned but IMO a lot of people tend to focus on the negatives only.he’s made some really really good tackles and last ditch tackles espescially last season.Mistakes aside,he cerainly had a better season than Koscielny. You just can’t ignore certain statistics.Maybe In your opinion he’s not good enough to start,In mine he certainly is and under a better manager he’ll get better. But for all those saying he’s not good enough to play for the club on the whole is baseless.

muffler_1, the organisation at the back has been a shambles since the days of the best back5 in PL history, Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Adams, Bould. Add Keown and Cole and it continued. Sol Campbell due to the guidance he received from Mr Arsenal kept things tight. Ive said it many times Wenger doesnt understand defending, he never thought it was important. His idea of a keeper was a continental flapper, his idea of full backs was deep lying wingers and his idea of central defenders was deep lying midfielders. He has never signed a decent central defender in his life (Sol was signed by Dein). Mustafi is a poor player who makes mistake after mistake. As Martin Keown stated recently he makes too many mistakes and never learns from them. He also lacks bottle. We need to get rid asap.

@ Tso mistakes happen nobody is perfect nor am i. Im willing to give him another go but he has to improve quite simple. Comparing him to LK is a bit unfair as LK has had injury problems all season.

I still have my reservations on him and i dont agree that he is first team material at least not from the seasons he has played. He is that now because the competition he gas is even worse.

The thing that really annoys me with Mustafi is when he makes a mistake he has a tantrum and blames others even when it’s glaringly obvious he is at fault. Just kick a post and hold your hand up! However he is still young and I think there is a good player in there so I’d like to see how hell do under Emery.

Orcale – along with Sol, Silvinho, Lauren, Toure, Vermaelen, Kos, Mertesaker, Monreal were all good defenders signed by Wenger add in Cole, Bellerin and Gibbs who were promoted and you could make a very good back four!

fatmop, Campbell was signed by Dein, not Wenger, Cole was already there and Wenger tried to sell him to Palace. Bellerin & Gibbs can not in anyone wildest imagination be classed as good defenders. Lauren and Toure were actually midfield players Wenger played out of position. Vermaelen, Koscielny, Mertesacker and Monreal can hardly be classed as ‘good’. Koscielny has been the best of that bunch but no stretch of the imagination top drawer. As for Vermaelen and Mertesacker you either have a short memory or you didnt watch them play. Then again you did think this time last year that we had the best squad in the PL and you did predict we would win the PL so your judgement is somewhat flawed.

You think Wenger didn’t want Sol? You talk utter bollox. Toure and Lauren were played out of position! They didn’t do badly did they? I suppose he should have kept Henry on the wing and Petit in defence too. Defence clealy wasn’t Wengers priority but he bought loads of good defenders think before you type

Fatmop its common knowledge Wenger didnt make that signing. Wenger had given up on trying to sign him. If it wasnt for David Dein that deal would never of happened. Thats is undeniable.
Im amazed as an Arsenal fan you dont know this. Its been in every biography you could reference around wenger and david dein.

Also im on the side of defender Wenger brought in on teh whole have been underperforers. I would say only really Kos and Toure would be worth a shout as good defenders signed. Wenger passed up the better defenders (cahill, vertongen, worst one was Kompany) in favor of as oracle would call them ‘deep lying midfielders’

Fatmop, Im afraid your lack of knowledge is embarrassing. As AndyC rightly states and as I have told you many times Dein signed Sol. As for Lauren & Toure as I have explained many times the coaching from the remains of the real back5 was still in place. The legend that was Mr Arsenal lived on through Campbell from his days with England. The likes of Keown & Parlour were still at the club for a short spell. Fast forward to teams with just Wenger style defenders and it has been a disaster with no organisation. As AndyC says its amazing that any Arsenal fan doesnt know this and you have the nerve to accuse other people of talking bollox. Then again anyone dumb enough to believe we were going to win the PL last season has no credibility whatsoever. Unbelievable ignorance.

You boys are still going on about Wenger it’s ridiculas he leaves you get what you want and you are still slating him. You both need to move on. This argument has been had many a times and it’s bollocks to say Dein signed Sol. So you actually think Wenger had nothing to do with it?? Or could it be they were working together for the club at the time and the idea the back four was only good because of the former back four just think how stupid that sounds. If you saw them play they were nothing like the old back four they played on the half way line all could do 100 meters in 10 seconds and relied on there pace and power. That team was the best I have ever seen and ever will and Wenger made that team. Let’s all move on stop talking crap about the old days and look forward to the new times

I know very well the story of how Campbell signed. Dein oversaw contracts of many players but it was Wenger who wanted them and Wenger was the manager so for me they are Wenger signings, good and bad! And there were many decent defenders
signed, which is why shifty you talk bollox.

I do however agree with Stev that we should look forward to the future and I’m looking forward to see how next season pans out, I just really hope we clan hold onto Ramsey because if him and Wilshire go we will need some major reinforcements at CM.

Fatmop, you can carry on with your Wenger fantasy if you like but the truth is Clouseau should have been sacked 10 years ago. Yes Dein organised and negotiated contracts but on this occasion he actually did everything because Wenger wasnt that bothered and had given up the ghost. Campbell was on his way to Barcelona and it was only Dein’s intervention at the eleventh hour that closed the deal. It looks if if Steve2bath1 is as ignorant as you on this matter. Did you not read Andy’s post. Then again anyone who stated we were going to win the PL last season because we had a better squad than Man City cant be taken seriously. At least we now have a First team Coach who knows how to organise a defence and a Recruitment Manager who can and will sign central defenders.

not fussed about wenger anymore well and truly over that one, but facts are facts. Its well documented how wenger had given up on signing Sol, never thought he could get it over the line if that means he signed him then it means i had just as much input as Sanchez signing for Arsenal!
its not even up for debate as that is what happened, its referenced in more sources than i care to count.
Like i said its not about wenger now, its about the way people still praise him for things he didnt do. i respect and appreciate all he did for the club, but he wasnt the mesiah

I mean the real question is…. who really cares? Wenger is gone. We don’t need to carry on having debates about him. It’s all about who Emery brings in and personally I like the one he has brought in so far, and it seem Adli will sign in the next day or so. If we add the Barca left back, Sokratis and Leno and Torreira Id’ be happy with our transfer business.
