Odd game this. Spartak should be winning this group but drew at home and away at little Maribor (they only games Maribor collected points in). Between those games they thrashed Sevilla 5-1 at home! A win and we’re through to the last 16. Anything less, well, let’s not think about that.
After the last two line-ups I’ve (almost) given up on predicting who will start but obviously Karius will be back in, Moreno likely (I’d give Robertson back to back games personally) with Klavan returning to a flat four? Midfield? Ox to come back in alongside Can/Wij and Henderson? Will the experience of Milner be utilised? I certainly wouldn’t mess with the front 4 which started against Brighton. Let’s get a good lead and then pull a couple of players.
This is the first game of 4 in 12 days but it’s s the biggest of those 4 so strong line-up and get the three points.
Thoughts?
December 4, 2017 at 2:11 pm #1565728Massive game Rob. It’s akl about going through but to top the group b brilliant
Don’t we just need a draw to qualify and a win to finish top?
I think we will see our strongest side. We cannot be one bit complacent. Don’t under estimate these.
December 4, 2017 at 2:17 pm #1565734Rob: Pretty sure a draw will see us through.
December 4, 2017 at 2:27 pm #1565739Ended up posting this (by following the thread) on the BHA game link – but re-posting it here where it’s more relevant:
Think this is how it works…. If Moscow beat us, we’ll both be on 9 points, but Moscow will be above due to a better head-to-head against us. If Sevilla then beat Maribor we are out. If Sevilla lose against Maribor, we progress because we’ll have more points than Sevilla. If Sevilla draw against Maribor then we should still progress because we’ll be on equal points with Sevilla but will have a better head-to head against them due to scoring more away goals. Think that’s all fairly simple isn’t it? However, let’s just stuff Moscow and take away all of these ifs/buts/maybes.
December 4, 2017 at 2:28 pm #1565744A draw will get us through but I’m being greedy and want the three points to win the group. Can’t imagine the state of my nerves if it’s 1-1 in the last minute and they get a corner so a win and convincingly please!
December 5, 2017 at 7:56 am #1565986Bit nervous about this. It’s a sign of big progress if we get into the 2nd round.
Too be great but it’s just about getting through. I just hope we don’t get nervous. 1-1 with 5 to go and I’ll be very nervous
December 5, 2017 at 8:16 am #1565995It is a simple situation draw and we are through, win and we top the group, lose and we are out. Would be nice to be a couple up going into the last 10, would make the end of the game a bit more relaxing, don’t fancy a repeat of Olympiakos 🙂
December 6, 2017 at 1:31 am #1566429Oh boy here we go again. Another massive must win game. Im feeling very very nervous. Spartak have got good quick attacking players the kind that would trouble our defence. If they attack us from the start of the game, we’re gonna win because our forwards love an open game but we all know that’s not gonna happen. They gonna sit back defend deep and then try to hit us on the break or nick a goal from corners or freekicks. I can imagine it already. Its the 80th min and its still 0-0 or 1-1 and everytime they have a corner or freekick our defence will be in a state of panic. And our tallest defender isnt playing too. Please lets have an early goal to settle our nerves.
December 6, 2017 at 1:34 am #1566430We cant defend so we might as well put out our strongest attacking players and try to score loads. Im hoping for Firmino Salah Mane and Coutinho to start.
December 6, 2017 at 5:50 am #1566435Can see both sides in terms of the benefits of finishing first or second. For me it’s more fundamental than that.
We simply can’t rely on us to finish second, just imagine if we are drawing and it’s last minute and they get a free kick ….
We need to do what we do best, try and blow them away (not gung ho but relying on our strengths) and then try and hang on by changing to a more defensive personal if we go a couple up.
December 6, 2017 at 6:02 am #1566436The line up is a difficult one. I would have Salah on the bench, and use him only if necessary. Klavan and Gomez come in with a midfield 3 of Can, Gini and Hendo. As many have said, I just pray we can kill the game early and are not hanging on at the end.
On the bright side, Everton are playing tomorrow night, away in Cyprus, so have a day less to prepare for the derby, though presumably they will only be playing the ressies tomorrow night
December 6, 2017 at 6:33 am #1566438hightown long time no see. Hows it going at footydebate.com. i think everton will play the reserves tomorrow night
December 6, 2017 at 6:34 am #1566439I dont really care we finish 1st or 2nd in the group tbh. i just want us to go through.
December 6, 2017 at 6:59 am #1566442Cheers reds. Been keeping an eye or two on these pages as well!
I’m with you, just qualifying for the last 16 is the priority. So far if we finish 2nd in our group, we can get Barca, PSG or Roma, and if we win the group, Basel, Bayern Munich or Juventus. While there is a difference in quality between those two groups of teams, there is not a huge difference, so let’s not look too far ahead, and just get the job tonight!!
December 6, 2017 at 8:07 am #1566478And to add to my last post, regardless of other results tonight, if we finish 2nd in the group we can add Besiktas only to potential opponents, but if we finish 1st we can add potentially Napoli (or Shaktar), Porto (or Leipzig) and Real Madrid.
So it’s pretty much six of one and half a dozen of the other. Whatever, there will be some tasty ties. Off to the game tonight with a certain amount of trepidation, only because we so rarely seem to do things the easy way. We should have qualified easily from this group, having dominated every game, and having led in every game. And if that had been the case it would have been starts for the likes of Ox, Robertson, Milner and Solanke tonight. Exciting though, innit??
December 6, 2017 at 8:08 am #1566479Hightown, Salah was rested last week so I’d start him. This is an absolutely massive game. We cannot be going into th last ten min drawing.
Primuis or whatever is who missed the first game is back.
Hightown, great to see beck chum. I notice you never post anything the team anymore mate. Has your mole left the club?
I always thought it was Lucas mate.December 6, 2017 at 8:39 am #1566490I would put Salah, Coutinho on the bench. Sturridge, Lallana, Mane and Solanke to start. Mix it up with players who are fittest after returning from Brighton. Should be enough to get the job done. Don’t want to win 4-0 tonight and then draw against Everton. Would rather take a draw in the CL but a resounding win on Sunday.
December 6, 2017 at 9:14 am #1566505After resting a few against Brighton, I would go full strength for the nest 2 and then rest some in the games against WBA and Bournemouth, so for this one I would go with,
Karius
TAA, Gomez, Lovern, Moreno (Assuming Matip still out)
Can, Coutinho, Wiji
Salah, Firmino, ManeSwapping Karius with Migs for the Everton game as we know that is the case.
December 6, 2017 at 11:02 am #1566574Sean…yeah you’re right! Lucas is rumbled!!
December 6, 2017 at 11:04 am #1566576It would appear the technical issues on this site have been resolved!
