Utd are in good form, but it doesn’t matter in games like that. Mourinho was happy to park the bus and pick up a point from this fixture 12 months ago, but Utd return to Anfield in much better spirits. With Matic looking more and more impressive in front of a rearguard which has kept six clean sheets in seven PL games, we are well placed to soak up pressure and an early onslaught and unleash our speed on the counter-attack. Any sort of result would be fine, performance here doesn’t matter too much. With City looking so hot, wins are needed to keep up. Liverpool 0-1 Utd

October 10, 2017 at 7:08 am #1542750Massive game for us, hardest of the season so far and will be a barometer of how well we have progressed. Hopefully JM will pick tactics that allow our forward line plenty of the ball to cause them issues.
October 10, 2017 at 7:10 am #1542751I’d go for a boring 0-0 however in these games one silly mistake / moment of magic can decide the result (see Pogba’s stupid handball and Ibrahimovic’s brilliant finish last year at Old Trafford).
October 10, 2017 at 12:56 pm #1542938Given our current injury list, I’d go for the following starting eleven:
Martial Lukaku Rashford
Mata
Herrera MaticBlind Jones Bailly Valencia
DDG
In the second half I would bring on Ashley Young to get some good crosses in. I’d also bring on Carrick for Matic, to give the latter some rest. As well as Miki for Rashford, for the same reason.
October 10, 2017 at 1:47 pm #1542961@cr – Don’t think resting Matic away to Liverpool is the best idea! But I like the starting line-up, though I’d probably go for Mhkitaryan ahead of Mata and possibly even Darmian ahead of Blind simply coz of the pace of the Liverpool wingers.
Cheers
October 10, 2017 at 2:06 pm #1542968A 2-1 win for us.
Herera will replace Fellaine and i would look at starting Mata in the left side of a midfield 3 alongside Matic and Ander. But even a straight 4-2-3-1 with The latter 2 in the double pivot.Another scenario would be playing Rashford and Tony alongside Rashford with Mata as a 10 and Mkhi starting from the bench.
October 10, 2017 at 3:42 pm #1543000Much as I hate to admit it, we’re actually going to miss Fellaini this weekend (and I know I’m going to get a load of grief for that statement), more because of Pogba’s absence as well but he is a strong presence in midfield regardless of his technical ability. He may only be a big awkward fucker but he unsettles teams with his height and physicality in the same way Pogba can unsettle teams, he just lacks Pogba’s ability to see a pass, give a pass, tackle, create attacks, break up attacks, you get my drift.
It’s going to be tough because our midfield is weaker without both Pogba and Fellaini but that Liverpool defence is shaky. If we press them they’ll fold, especially given that Lovren is playing injured, Matip is suffering from the lack of support from his partner in central defence and the wing backs, well on the left side especially they’re poor.
It still won’t be an easy game but we still have the capability to win, if Herrera can shut down Hazard he sure as shit can shut down Coutinho.October 10, 2017 at 4:17 pm #1543022I think we’ll win and it will be relatively comfortable in the end, we’re much the better team and they are awful at the back. Plus i’m hearing that Mane has suffered a bad injury?
0-2 to us!October 10, 2017 at 6:27 pm #1543069I am feeling bullish going into this one. We are sky high on confidence and Liverpool have just got the news of Mane’s injury. With his pace out of the equation I think we can shut them out by simply having Herrera man mark Coutinho with Matic patrolling behind. With Martial resting over the international break plus Mkhitaryan, Lukaku, and Rashford coming in I just think we have too much quality to concede and similarly have too much quality not to score.
Killeboye is correct. Fellaini would probably be a good shout to score the winner in this game but I still believe we have too much for them.
2-0 to Manchester United.
October 10, 2017 at 8:17 pm #1543112Sympathy,
Good point about not resting Matic against Liverpool of all matches. Not sure about Darmian though. I guess he’s (only slightly) faster than Blind but Blind has better positioning and passing/crossing.
October 11, 2017 at 9:25 am #1543204I think if Felliani hadn’t of got injured then its a midfield 3 of him, Matic and Herrera. With Herrera tasked to stop Countinho like he did last season at Anfield. The problem now will be how do we set up in midfield? Personally, i’d just go with Matic and Herrera with Miki in front and have a proper go at them. Probably makes us weaker in terms of them attacking and creating but i also think their biggest weakness is the defence and we should put it under as much pressure as possible. It’ll be interesting to see how Mourinho sets up and how much confidence he really has in the team. Normally he’d be pragmatic and take a point at Anfield no doubt. So lets see what happens on Saturday. Looking forward to a good tough game.
October 11, 2017 at 9:41 am #1543216Valencia was suspended for the Ecuador
Sat night after picking up a nice snide yellow card against Chile at the weekend…anyone know if he was allowed to catch an early flight home?Fingers crossed Firminho and/or Coutinho catch deep vein thrombosis on the way back.
October 11, 2017 at 10:44 am #1543260With Utd lacking the height of Fellaini and Pogba in midfield, Mourinho could be tempted to play a three-man defence (3-4-3)
De Gea
Jones, Bailly, Smalling
Valencia, Herrera, Matic, Blind
Mkhitaryan, Lukaku, Rashford
October 11, 2017 at 11:11 am #1543276Great for us that Mane is injured – to me he is their best player, though Salah and Coutinho are also top class and players we need to keep an eye on.
October 11, 2017 at 1:41 pm #1543359They don’t win many games without Mane in their team so we have to go their feeling confident, especially considering the forms of both teams.
October 11, 2017 at 4:42 pm #1543434It’s funny happy, when I heard that Mane had twanged his hammy my first thought was, get in there….have that YSB’s!
But I’m not sure…they might look there for the taking but that’s when we have produced some of our worst performances at Anfield. That foul word…complacency.
The good news is that I haven’t got a ticket and am not going which usually coincides with a decent United performance at Liverpool. The bad news is that if we get beat I’ll be pissed, on here and rowing like a demented beast with the miserable old count brigade.
October 11, 2017 at 4:58 pm #1543437I don’t think it matters if Mane is fully fit or if he, Coutinho, Salah, and the Ox were injured; Mourinho will still play not to lose IMO.
0-0
October 11, 2017 at 5:52 pm #1543448Yeah I know what you mean Tommy. But he’s the one player that makes things happen for them, their record without him is awful. It doesn’t mean they’re there for the taking, just makes them less dangerous on the counter attack. Even though that Salah fella is pretty fast.
But you just can’t call these games no matter which team is in the best form. As soon as they walk out in that atmosphere they just get caught up in a cauldron of emotion and everything they’ve prepared for goes out the window. A few tackles fly in and then all hell breaks loose. You’d probably be better off betting on Valencia getting a red card inside the first 8 minutes, for a terrible tackle on Coutinho, than you would predicting a routine 2-0 win!
