“There is no doubt Azpi was at fault at times at the weekend. There’s also no doubt he hasn’t been at his peak over the last 12 months. But anyone watching on Sunday should be very wary about wishing one of the most experienced players out of the team for another teenager.

If there was one thing that side lacked against Manchester United it was experience, and for all the incredible talent that Reece James has, he is 19. In a team which already looked extremely green and naive, dropping the average age another notch could prove to be a mistake.

James will certainly get his chance unless Azpilicueta improves. And is he earns a starting place he should keep it. But right now we should be backing our experienced players to step up, rather than calling for more teenagers to be thrown into what could be a very testing season.

That’s the kind of thing that can damage a player’s psyche long term. Just see how Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma’s confidence goes if they continue conceding goal every week.

For the sake of the team, a performing Azpi will help out more than a talented youngster trying to find his feet. Will Faulks Chelsea Net.

Watched the highlight, really unlucky with the post and the woodwork. But the pen was a silly one. We played with 2 DM in Jorg and Kovacic. Yet not enough. Kante is desperately needed. Zouma played with M Keane or Jagielka at Everton, older than him. Why he deceives now with Christensen, it’s weird. He has to step up. Becoming a leader in our defensive line. Still 4-0 is a tough one to swallow. Liverpool next. A way better team than Man Utd. Let’s see how we fare against them.

agree nine, but that is exactly why I am more worried about azpi than the youngsters, we expect mistakes from them but are depending on our experienced players to be at their best.

“Manager Frank Lampard said Chelsea should not overreact to the 4-0 defeat his depleted side suffered against Manchester United in their opening fixture of the Premier League season.

The Blues were the better team in the first half but trailed 1-0 at the break after Kurt Zouma’s rash challenge led to Marcus Rashford’s penalty opener.

And two goals in two minutes soon after the hour saw the game as good as done.

Lampard, who took over as boss in the summer, said a raft of returning players will bring an improvement.

“I have tried to stay away from (talking about) the transfer ban and the injuries,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “But it’s clear. We all know that.

“I was trying to get N’Golo on to get him minutes so that’s a bonus to see him out there.

“We have Willian and [Antonio] Rudiger not far away. Callum [Hudson-Odoi] and Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] are slightly further than that and Reece James, who is coming back, will be a big player for us.

“We are missing internationals and big players, but I don’t want to make excuses. The team we put out was competing for long periods but we made four mistakes and they were absolutely clinical. There is a reality check for us all.

“We hit the woodwork twice, there were balls across the face, poor decisions in the final third when we should be able to get shots away and score goals.

“We should be in the lead. All of a sudden, the second and third goals were two mistakes and it’s much easier for them to play at 3-0 up.

“At 1-0 up we were the better team but I can’t stand here and look happy with that because it’s 4-0.

“It doesn’t feel nice. We are Chelsea; we don’t want to lose anywhere 4-0.”

Good advice and sensible comments from Frank imo.

Mourinho is criticising the Chelsea youngsters Abraham and Mount?this insane individual has the guts to speak about these wonderful players? and by the way what does he know about young players. this is one man who couldn’t work with our once blossoming academy, but instead opted to sign a 32 year old E’too? disgusting coach.

I thought they were cheap comments from Jose also Wisefan, you would think he would understand the position Lamps is in with injured players.

I found it funny when he said Alonso should have played when Jose would not have let a player like Alonso any where near his back four if he could help it. He also suggested christensen shouldnt have played but made no mention of zouma? Maybe thats because only last week he was saying in an interview how zouma is the defender we need!

Like jose himself said about jamie redknapp, you win every game when you are a pundit.

Nobody dislikes Azpi, not me at least. but what is clear is that he is struggling at right-back and needs a positional change. he will do a wonderful job at CB alongside Christensen. in the meantime Zouma whilst good is struggling to adapt with our system. and that is costing us big time. so why not pair Azpi alongside Christensen and bring Zapacosta who is more mobile than Azpi at Right back perhaps that is what many posters are calling for.

I would bench Zouma the next few games. he shouldn’t have started yesterday because he is tactically out of his depth. and remember he didn’t go straight to the Everton line up. he was integrated little by little. likewise, Barkley seems to be our best creative midfielder at the minute. we need to find a permanent room for him in our midfield. it will be difficult to integrate all of those young and new players in one set up. it should be done little by little. i would stick with Abraham as he has shown signs of promise. and would either play a diamond where i would pair him with Pulsic and Barkley behind them, or play 4-4-1-1 with Barkley supporting him. we can’t isolate him completely.

Lucky, “I found it funny when he (Jose) said Alonso should have played when Jose would not have let a player like Alonso any where near his back four if he could help it.”

Likewise probably Zappacosta too both are primarily wing backs rather than fullbacks imo and lack the defensive nous to play the full back role effectively.

Exactly nine, both were bought by conte for a different system altogether. Although despite his defensive vulnerability I do think Alonso has a lot to offer us in certain games.

Two very good posts Wise Fan and couldn’t agree more, especially the second post. Spot on in my opinion. Azpi and Zouma both struggling big time. I noted the decline of both in the preseason not just against United. Azpi appears to struggle with pace and cannot recover defensively when we get caught on the counter and Zouma just looks cumbersome/uncoordinated and mistake prone. He nearly gifted Martial a goal early on with a stray pass coming out of defence.

I know I’m guilty of bias when I’m assessing Jorginho’s performance. but yesterday’s display hasn’t improved my already unfavorable view towards him. everyone has their individual opinion about our second-half collapse yesterday. but my personal opinion is that we lost the midfield battle in the second half. in the first half, we won the midfield battle and the number of chances we have created was a testimony. but in the second half, we have lost control of the midfield battle. and that in part I feel is down to Jorginho lacking energy and stamina to press and tackle a full 90 minutes. had we had a fit Kante alongside Kovacic, I’m certain we would have dominated that midfield.

Also the subbing of Barkley has had an impact on our attack. Pedro has been very poor yesterday, and to be honest he needs to take responsibility. but the bright side is that we have Pulsic, CHO, and Willian to come at some stages in the season. we have given a far too big gap between our defense and midfield. and credit to United they have exploited it in the second half once we lost the midfield battle. apart from that Penalty he has conceded, Zouma wasn’t at fault with any other goal. I don’t know why are people blaming him for our catastrophic second-half display. neither Azpi was directly responsible with any goal also.
Abraham didn’t do that bad in my opinion. whilst he hasn’t pulled any trees yesterday, I can understand his nervousness. he is making his Chelsea debut, it’s a big game, an away game. so that carries a lot of pressure with it. even Torres who was experienced enough struggled on his debut with that occasion. but I feel the youngman has done quite well. and as the lesser opposition is faced. I expect him to start scoring.

Once Kante regains his full fitness and is paired with Kovacic, and Barkley plays in front of them, we will have a competitive midfield there. and Willian returns and takes the left-wing spot, plus Pulsic takes the right spot. that will make our attack and defense balanced.

While he has good and accurate short passes and excellent ball control, for me Jorg is not Premier League quality. A one dimensional player. Too slow, no speed. Cannot tackle cannot shoot. He was useful when not marked for Sarri-ball. But probably Christensen, Luiz or Ampadu playing DM would do better than Jorg. For me Lamps first mistake was to sell Luiz. He can play CB he can play DM. Sloppy but can shoot can pass. Can score as well. If Kante cannot start yet, hope Lamps play Christensen as DM with Kovacic and Zouma + Tomori CB. We need to protect our backline against Pool

67, Zouma is a worry he looked very nervous as is Azpi’s loss of form the problem is we don’t have anyone capable of stepping in currently I wouldn’t kick Azpi out and put James straight in that would be a big jump especially after his injury and we have to have a balance of experience and youth in the tesm imo.

Frank needs to work on Azpi in training I think Zappa is much to vulnerable defensively to play regularly as he’s primarily a wing back Rudiger and Kante in the team will have a massive impact on us defensively.

Azpi has shown over a long period of time to be a very good and reliable defender. He is versatile as well. I think he had a bad game, that’s all. Attacking has never been his forte but he is normally very good at defending. It would be silly to drop Azpi over one bad performance. We need our senior players more than ever to guide our young talents. To replace him with Zappa won’t fix anything. Zappa is a liability when defending. On the other side, I would still choose Emerson over Alonso at the moment. He is better in defending, quicker too.

Been very busy and off again now but I want to say I saw a recording last night and I cannot remember if I ever seen a match where a side plays such a dominant game for 75% of the match and yet still loses 4-0. Would never have happened at the Bridge. Obviously this suggests we have problems at the back. Unfortunately it puts Frank under a lot of pressure and the Leicester game is a must win or we could find ourselves bottom of the table. The team Frank selected is more than good enough however you also need a bit of luck in every game. Also an experienced head at the back like Rüdiger. There’s no point in critisising anyone because players like Cahill and Luiz left, we lost in the past at OT when they played as well. Historically United have always been very lucky at their ground so a win Sunday and we back on track not of course to match the likes of City but for a top 4 or 6 placing.

67, I saw James play for Wigan at Bristol City he played in midfield that day but he’s a beast of a player and looks the real deal very comfortable on the ball very strong in the tackle bags of energy and he scored a great goal that day too.

The fact that Chelsea turned down a £25 m bid from Palace tells its own story I’m sure he will begin to figure in the team once fully fit and once he’s got a match or two under his belt and he’s capable of playing in more positions than just right full back too.
