Emery was one of my fav, glad we ain’t taking risk with Arteta. We could, but as it is we can’t afford to time with the position we in. Happiest day I’ve had in 2018. Hope it’s true

Me to Arteta was to much of a risk and I don’t think would have been enough change. Emery has loads of experience and apparently is a good coach not just a manager. Really hope this is not a smoke screen to get Arteta and would be great if we can just get it done and stop pissing about!

happy enough with that but although i have read his trophies etc i dont know to much about his style of play, more imprtantly, can he get a team to actually DEFEND?!

we can score and we can create, we have great players to do that, IF we can start defending we will actually be in a reasonable place so fingers crossed….

Wow that happened quickly! When Emery’s name was suddenly in the mix again, I was thinking we had at least another week of speculation to look forward to.

Not gonna pretend I know much about him so can only go on his stats. Amazing record with Sevilla in the Europa and his finishing league positions and win percentage weren’t dissimilar to Wenger’s so hopefully, with a bit more money to spend and a better squad, he’ll have us back up there.

Whoever we get in, I haven’t been this excited about the upcoming season for at least a decade.

    Welcome to Arsenal Unai!

I don’t get Ian right’s criticism towards Arsenal in the appointing process. Not that I have time to defend the board,he does realise that it is the club that interviews the candidate and not the other way round.if They’ve reached out to people like viera, there’s nothing wrong in hearing out his ideas and vision for the club.Similarly for Arteta, who was favourite to join us just days ago, there’s no way it’s him who turned us down.He couldn’t,nowhere else could he get a chance for a managerial position in a club of our stature.

I’m not surprised about emery,i mentioned his name last week and who I think we should get. He’s a perfect fit for the profile and has also been endorsed by wenger as a manager previously. He’s managed clubs like sevilla and valencia, making them finish 3rd,4th positions and he’s won the Europa league three times. It basically matches this board’s ambition let’s be honest so as soon i started hearing he’s in London i was convinced it was to meet with our club. Please name me a better available manager right now?Simieone’s not leaving, allegri’s not leaving, enrique’s demanding too much and all the best managers manage our rivals.

However, let’s just wait for the confirmation you never know with this club.

Somebobdy asked how do his teams defend…well with minimal watching of PSG badly..but thats inherited from previous managers…Sevilla tended to defend from the wingers back and mostly around the 18 yard line…I watched VAlencia more which was a few years ago now and he had a strong influence in central midfield dictating the entire pattern of play (which he tried to use Rabiot for at PSG) Albelda and had players like Villa Silva,Mata and Hernandez/Joquin in a front 4 that where left to play…he was in charge at a time when they had to sell their best players every year but for several years he kept them competative albeit struggled against the big 2 in Spain at times…sound familiar to anyone…

I used to go to Spain and loved watching this team at the Mestalla….

Yes to Emery, a very good coach and someone who does know how to get a result. His counter-attacking style with his love for big strong midfielders and defenders will be great for us.
He has good relationships with most players he has managed. only really ever heard/read of Cavani, and Thiago silva having rifts with him but that was down to them both being dropped a few times by him. take that with a pinch of salt.
Im hoping and praying he will look to bring rabiot & kemembe from PSG he also got the very best out of some bang average players at Seville.
3 back to back europa league titles with seville and 3 top 3 finishes with valencia, lets not forget he was forced to watch his best players leave and was competing with madrid and barce so that’s no easy feat.
The best option, probably not. Better than Arteta and Wenger most definitely. This will be a good fit for us and once confirmed i will start looking forward to the season. There is also rumblings of Henry coming in alongside him, this again would be a very positive move from the powers that be.

Thank God we’ve got an experienced manager, whether by accident or design, doesn’t matter as we’ve dodged a major bullet with rookie Arteta. I don’t know much about him either, but according to other sites he played counter-attacking with Sevilla and possession football with PSG, so he is adaptable unlike the dinosaur Wenger. There are stories of him giving a brilliant presentation detailing exactly where our weaknesses are player by player, (presume with the help of a translator!), so he has done his homework and I am content with where we have ended up. The radio ( I know it’s Talk Sport) this morning said he’s aiming to build the team around Ramsey and Aubameyang, so wonder where this leaves our £350k a week “superstar?” Far fewer mid-season and “illness” breaks for sure. So what will be progress? A team that is competitive in the League for 9 months is for me a priority- we’ve not managed that for 14 seasons, so no trophies for a little while is not a stick to beat him with in my view.

TSO- think Wright was slamming the “decision” process by Slaphead. Arteta was his favourite and Krankie jnr, but something has happened. I also don’t believe MA would turn us down at the last minute, we’ve obviously burned our boats there possibly forever. More likely Gazidis suddenly got cold feet. We have to recognise that we are now attractive only to Europe’s second- tier managers, as we have been fifth and sixth in the past two seasons; hence we were linked with the number 2’s at Chelsea, Liverpool and of course, City. My own preference would have been Jardim or Nagelsmann, but am still content with someone who doubtless will be labelled “DicK” every time he messes up.

Jeff – Still though, don’t think there was anything wrong with the decision process, yes there are questions about the criteria for selection but there was nothing wrong with interviewing candidates.Like i said they’re coming to work for us,not we for them…and there’s no way that emery contact was made just days ago.PSG annunced more than a month ago he’d leave, and he always said and i quote he was “open” to the idea of joining Arsenal.People really don’t know what the truth is,but in my estimation we might have contacted him a week ago or maybe even before,he obviusly couldn’t come to discuss the transfer as he was still he was still in charge of PSG till a few days ago.Like you say, reportedly he blew the board with his presentation, knew more about our own players than anyone could imagine. For me,he’s definitely the right choice and I would like to discuss him more in detail once the appointment is finally made.Because the same happened with mikel.I don’t know what Ian wright has gotten against Arsenal though,he seems dissapointed with the potential appointment,he should be happy and please Name me a better manager we could’ve got this summer that matches the board’s ambition.

It’s interesting though, what will happen to Mikel Arteta.I mean if he was ready to join us,then he’s surely ready for a managerial role.if he has a good reputation as a coach, then why aren’t other clubs approaching him or vice versa. If he goes back to city no.2 it just proves he isn’t ready yet for a managerial role.Personally,I think he has a lot of potential as a coach but he needs expereince elsewhere.I’d love to see him at the club back again, but go on prove yourself first. But Like jeff mentioned it would be tough to lure him back in after he was the favourite only not to be in the end.

have to say i’m feeling lot more optimistic than i did if arteta
got the job.there’s no guarantees with anything but at least it
    gives us stability,and more importantly,experience.

the first two things i hope he does is get someone in like henry,
campbell who knows the afc way and what this prem lge is all about.
i don’t care how many times he has watched prem lge games.he’s in
for a culture shock in terms of every game is a tough one.

the second thing he must do is get hold of rambo and convince him
to stay.i’d start by making him the new club captain because he’s
27 now,and these next 4 seasons should be his best.he’s experienced
enough now and he leads by example.i actually think rambo can become
a more complete player and it would make sense to do that.he was our
best player last season and i’ve just found out he was our player of
the season(not hard),so he must step up even more for me.

all in all the defence must be a priority.emery is a proven winner
and that’s what we need at the club.arteta could very well become
manager of afc one day,but we needed a proven winner with the
experience that comes with it.nice to finally appoint a manager who
has won european trophies.i hope he targets that big time next
season and i hope we can go one better.it’s the right decision by
gazidis and im more than glad to give him credit for it.well done.

Good call on Rambo Steve. It’s about time we had a captain who is not only a leader, but one of the best players on the pitch too.

Loving these rumours about Henry coming in as his assistant.

Having had a few hours to think about last nights news, I still don’t know how I feel about it! What I do think is, Ivan has bottled it! Let me just clarify, that’s nothing against Emery – I don’t know enough about the man. However, it isn’t the ‘bold and brave’ appointment Gazidis said we would be making. He has quite literally, on paper, taking the safest option available, with perhaps the exception of Carlo.

I think the club floated the idea early of bringing Arteta in and took plenty of notice of the fan base reaction. It just feels to me like Ivan knew that if he hired Mikel and it went south, it would be his head on the line next and he wasn’t willing to take that risk.

No denying Emery has achieved things but these need to be looked at carefully and balanced against his shortcomings as well. I don’t give his wins in France a great deal of attention. I know you can only beat what is in front of you but I would fancy my own chances in that league with a blank cheque book.
2 back to back europa leagues with Seville is commendable. One on penalties, one against Dnipro and the recent win against Liverpool. Appears to have been moved out of PSG due to his inability to take them on to the next level in Europe.

My concerns about him were slightly offset today by hearing about how impressive his interview, and analysis of the squad was. Sounds as though he has done his homework! More than anything, I am surprised he was that keen on the role. He is going from the wealthiest club in the world to a club who won’t give him anything like the money he is used to spending. Not even close.

As I said when Arteta was on the cards, I will back whoever is chosen and remain excited to see what happens this season. However, I’m not buying the story that he was always the first choice and it appears our conduct towards other candidates has been poor at best. We certainly don’t do things the easy way!

He only ever had cash at PSG andy other clubs he has managed have had even more limitations in terms of finances than what is available at Arsenal. What we will get is someone who from past expeeriences with Spanish clubs jumps about the technical area as if he is actually coaching you see him waving his hands and pointing in directions he thinks passes etc should go and he does not bother about reputations either again from his time in Spain…Like I said he changed the Valencia setup over a few seasons due to financial restrictions and kept them competative…I believe he could do well for us and wanted him a few years back but just never thought he would jump back in so soon after the PSG stint…As has been said only stumbling block is his English but hopefully that can be overcome…very excited about the future although I have to remind myself that he often chops and changes his team selection from one week to the next much like Allegri does at Juve…

Andy – Emery is a perfect Europa league manager, who has overachieved at most of the clubs he’s been at.How can you expect gazebo to make the “bold” appointment he’s apparently said when there’s no one available. The only two possible managers who could come in and be most established are Simione and Allegri who are both not leaving their clubs.Ok maybe conte but his philosiphy is everything against this club.

So emery was the correct choice, for now atleast. He’s proven to overachieve at clubs like valencia and sevilla.Right now we are in the bracket of those class of clubs.yes, financially and with our stature we are capable of much more and ultimately our aim should be to win the PL but for now there is no better person that fits the board’s ambitions.

Great article here about Emery. Until he’s actually got a season under his belt, there’s obviously no way to be sure but it really sounds like he’ll be a great fit for us.

    Morning Al. Good read that.

Have to say, although I wasn’t convinced by the process of how the club decided on Unai, I am pleased to be reading so much about how organised he is and how hard is going to work people. I’m hoping that he is going to weed out anyone who isn’t willing to graft and the first player that comes to mind is Ozil! People will often defend Mesut by talking about his numbers and ‘how much distance he covers’ per game. I’m not buying it. It’s about intent. He never accelerates beyond a steady jog when he doesn’t have the ball!
He had such an easy ride under Wenger. Absolutely no responsibilities and able to miss games whenever he felt like it. Really hope Emery kicks his arse into shape, along with a few others.

It’s done thank goodness we have not pissed about and looks like the fans all think this is a good appointment so it should unify the club. I am really excited about this I hope and believe we will give him a chance and not expect miracles but having read up on him over the last few days, I did not see any negative comments apart from the Neymar spat so I think, hope and pray he could be exactly what we need !
